Chapter 3

As the days turned into weeks, Ashwin and Arshaad settled into a rhythm that felt natural yet thrilling. Their relationship remained mostly under the radar at school, not because they were ashamed, but because they both knew the complexities of high school life. The whispers, the sideways glances—it wasn’t something they wanted to deal with just yet. Instead, they cherished their time alone, where they could be themselves without the pressure of the outside world.

Their favorite spot became the old oak tree in the park, the place where they had first confessed their feelings. Every Friday afternoon, they would head there after school, bringing snacks and just enjoying each other’s company. It was their sanctuary, a place where time seemed to slow down, where they could talk about anything and everything.

One Friday, as they sat under the tree with the sun dipping low in the sky, Arshaad turned to Ashwin, a serious look in his eyes. “I’ve been thinking,” he began, his voice thoughtful.

“About what?” Ashwin asked, taking a bite of his sandwich.

Arshaad hesitated for a moment before speaking. “I don’t want to hide anymore,” he admitted, his eyes searching Ashwin’s. “I mean, I’m not saying we need to make a big announcement or anything, but I’m tired of pretending like what we have isn’t important.”

Ashwin felt a flutter of nerves, but he understood where Arshaad was coming from. The secrecy had been weighing on him too, the constant need to hold back when all he wanted was to be close to Arshaad, even in public. “I feel the same way,” he admitted. “But are you sure? People can be… difficult.”

Arshaad nodded, his expression resolute. “I know, but I don’t care. We shouldn’t have to hide who we are just because other people might not understand. We’re not doing anything wrong.”

Ashwin’s heart swelled with pride at Arshaad’s words. He had always admired Arshaad’s strength, his unwavering confidence, and now more than ever, he was grateful to have him by his side. “Okay,” he agreed, a smile spreading across his face. “Let’s do it. No more hiding.”

That weekend, they decided to take their first step toward being open about their relationship. It was a small gesture, but it meant everything to them. They went to a local café, one that was popular among their classmates, and sat together in a corner booth. Ashwin was nervous, his hands trembling slightly as he held his cup of coffee, but Arshaad’s presence was a calming force beside him.

At first, no one seemed to notice them, but eventually, a few of their friends from school walked in. One of them, a girl named Priya, spotted them and came over to say hello. “Hey, you two! I didn’t know you guys hung out here,” she said with a smile.

Ashwin glanced at Arshaad, who gave him a reassuring nod before turning to Priya. “Yeah, we’ve been coming here a lot lately,” Arshaad said casually, his arm draped comfortably over the back of Ashwin’s seat. It was a small gesture, but it was enough to convey that they were more than just friends.

Priya’s eyes flicked to Arshaad’s arm and then back to Ashwin. A moment of surprise passed over her face, but then she smiled again, a genuine warmth in her expression. “That’s awesome,” she said sincerely. “You guys make a cute couple.”

Ashwin felt a rush of relief and gratitude. He had been bracing himself for a different reaction, but Priya’s acceptance was like a weight lifted off his shoulders. “Thanks, Priya,” he said, his voice filled with appreciation.

“Yeah, thanks,” Arshaad echoed, his smile bright.

Priya chatted with them for a few more minutes before heading to her own table, leaving Ashwin and Arshaad to bask in the small victory of their first public outing as a couple.

“That wasn’t so bad,” Ashwin said with a grin once Priya was out of earshot.

“No, it wasn’t,” Arshaad agreed, leaning in to press a quick kiss to Ashwin’s cheek. “We can do this, Ash. We can be ourselves, and the people who care about us will support us.”

Ashwin nodded, feeling more confident than he had in a long time. “You’re right. And I’m glad we’re doing this together.”

As the weeks passed, word of their relationship began to spread through the school. There were a few murmurs and raised eyebrows, but for the most part, their friends were supportive. Some were surprised, others not so much, but in the end, it didn’t matter. What mattered was that Ashwin and Arshaad were finally free to be themselves, without the fear of hiding in the shadows.

Their bond only grew stronger as they navigated the ups and downs of high school life together. There were challenges, of course—moments of doubt, the occasional harsh word from someone who didn’t understand—but they faced them head-on, always leaning on each other for support.

One evening, as they sat together under the oak tree, the sky painted in shades of twilight, Arshaad turned to Ashwin with a soft smile. “I love you, Ash,” he said, his voice filled with a quiet certainty.

Ashwin’s breath caught in his throat, his heart swelling with emotion. He had known it for a while, had felt it in the way Arshaad looked at him, in the way he held him close. But hearing the words made it all the more real. “I love you too, Arshaad,” he replied, his voice thick with emotion.

They sat there for a long time, wrapped in each other’s arms, the world around them fading into the background. In that moment, nothing else mattered—not the opinions of others, not the challenges they might face. All that mattered was that they had each other, and that was more than enough.

As the stars began to twinkle in the night sky, Ashwin and Arshaad knew that whatever the future held, they would face it together, hand in hand, their hearts bound by a love that was as strong as it was undeniable. And in that certainty, they found a peace that would carry them through the rest of their days at Willowspring High, and beyond.
