December 24, 1941.
My Dearest Niece,
I hope this letter finds you well. The war has been hard on all of us, and I often think of home and the family. Being here in Germany has shown me many things, both the horrors of war and the strength of the human spirit.
Today, we celebrated Christmas with a local family. It was a beautiful and bittersweet experience. For a few hours, we were able to forget the war and just be human beings, sharing food and laughter. The children’s faces lit up with joy as we sang carols and exchanged small gifts. It reminded me of home, of the Christmases we used to have. I miss those days, but I am grateful for the kindness and hospitality of the German people. It gives me hope that, even in the darkest times, there is still light and love to be found.
I do not know when I will return, but please know that I am thinking of you always. Tell your mother that I love her and that I am safe. Also, tell my dearest niece that her uncle is proud of her, loves her and misses her soo much.
