The Garden
The sun broke through the horizon on the sleeping face of a child surrounded by papers with a burnt out lantern. Nicholas flinched as he felt the sun on his face.
As he woke up, he quickly put his hand on his heart where the letter he read last night was located. He let out a sigh when he felt the outline of the letter in his breast pocket. A small smile played on his lips as he spoke in soft voice.

Nico got up and slowly started stretching his body before he looked up at the window. He took into account how much time he had until it got dark.

Nicholas picked up the map of estate he found last night before falling by asleep and quickly looked for the kitchen.
Once he found the kitchen, he quickly made his way there. He didn’t want to waste time as he didn’t know how long it would remain light out.

I’ve gotta check in the food. It’ll be a problem if I don’t have any food to eat.
Once he entered the kitchen, he held his nose in disgust.

They didn’t even give him a decent kitchen. At least clean it before you leave!
Although Nico was raising his voice, he didn’t have the courage to yell at anyone. It just wasn’t in his nature.

Forget it, I’ll clean it after I check the rations.
Nicholas opened up the pantry to find that there was barely anything. No meat, rotten fruits, somewhat rotting vegetables, and some wheat.
The expression on Nico’s face darkened as he looked at the state of things.

Nico continued to curse until he ran out of breath. He looked at the room in anger, but calmed himself down as he thought about his current situation.

Nico looked around more before he headed outside to the garden on the map of the estate.

Nico’s eyes became shocked as he stared out into the garden. It was a feeling of amazement.
Nico walked through the beautiful garden as he admired the beauty of the plants.

Anyone could tell that whoever cared for the garden before was more than just passionate about the garden. The feeling Nico got from the garden was more than just excitement. He felt a connection from his soul as he touched the plants.
Nico looked at a flower that grew between the cracks of the rocks on the ground and stared at the flower. He could feel a sense of sadness and despair in the garden as he stared at the flower.
As he picked up the flower, a sudden memory appeared in his mind.
The sound of a child giggling caught his attention. A child around the age of five or six.

*giggling* Mommy! Look at all the flowers! They’re so pwetty!
A woman with equally beautiful white hair walked behind the young Nicholas with a basket. A kind and soft smile on her face as she looked at Nicholas.

Col, be careful. You’ll get hurt if you run around too much.
Nico stared at his mother who looked back at him. A small smile on her face as she looked as if she could cry at any second.

Nico stared at the woman as she touched Nicholas’ face with a sad expression.
Nicholas looked up at his mother in wonderment, but quickly smiled back at her.

Brenda couldn’t help, but stay silent. She nodded before she hugged him without saying another word.

Nico stared at that scene. He could see Brenda visibly crying while holding Nicholas who was smiling happily. He felt his heart ache as he stared at Brenda’s face.
