chapter 2

Lila's mind buzzed with questions as she sifted through the genetic sequence Elena had sent. Her lab, usually a place of methodical research, now felt like the center of a whirlwind. The sequence before her was unlike anything she had ever seen—a blend of human DNA and something… more.

She rubbed her eyes, exhaustion clawing at the edges of her focus. Just as she was about to give in and grab a coffee, her holo-computer chimed again. Another message. This time, it wasn’t just a sequence.

It was a video.

With a shaky hand, Lila pressed play. The screen flickered, and then there was Elena, looking tired but determined. She was somewhere unfamiliar, the background a stark white, almost sterile.

“Lila,” Elena said, her voice steady but with an undercurrent of urgency. “I don’t have much time. By now, you’ve seen the genetic code. It’s a map—a map to find me. You need to follow it, piece by piece. I’m… I’m stuck in a place between times. They call it the Nexus. I can’t explain everything now, but you have to trust me.”

The video cut off abruptly, leaving Lila staring at the blank screen. The Nexus? A place between times? The science seemed impossible, yet here was Elena, pleading for her help.

Lila inhaled deeply, centering herself. She had to approach this like any other problem—with logic and precision. She opened the genetic sequence again, this time looking for patterns, any clues that might lead her to Elena.

Hours turned into days as Lila threw herself into the work. She barely left the lab, her life reduced to a cycle of analysis and brief, fitful naps. The genetic code revealed itself slowly, its secrets unraveling like a complex puzzle.

One night, just as the weight of exhaustion threatened to overtake her, Lila found something—a series of markers within the DNA that corresponded to specific locations on Earth. It wasn’t just a map; it was a series of coordinates.

She input the first set into her geo-tracker. The location was a remote area in the Swiss Alps. It was an odd place to start, but she had no choice. Gathering her equipment, Lila booked the first flight she could find, her determination overriding the practical concerns of travel and time.

The journey was grueling, but Lila's resolve never wavered. As she hiked through the cold, crisp air of the Alps, she felt closer to Elena with each step. The coordinates led her to a secluded cave, its entrance partially hidden by overgrown foliage.

Lila hesitated for a moment, the reality of her situation hitting her. She was alone, in a foreign country, about to enter an unknown cave, all based on a cryptic message and a leap of faith. But the thought of Elena, stranded and needing her, pushed her forward.

Inside, the cave was dark and damp, the sound of dripping water echoing around her. She followed the path deeper, her flashlight casting eerie shadows on the walls. Eventually, she came to a chamber, and at its center was something that took her breath away—a sophisticated device, unlike anything she had ever seen.

It was a portal, or at least, that’s what it looked like. Lila approached it cautiously, her mind racing. Could this be what Elena had referred to? The key to the Nexus?

The device activated as she neared, its surface shimmering with a soft, otherworldly light. Lila felt a strange pull, as if the portal were calling to her. She took a deep breath, her heart pounding. This was it—the moment of truth.

With a final, determined step, Lila entered the portal. The world around her shifted, the familiar confines of the cave dissolving into a swirl of colors and light. For a moment, she felt disoriented, as if she were floating in a void.

Then, just as suddenly, it was over. She found herself standing in a stark white room, the same as in Elena’s video. And there, across the room, was Elena.

“Lila!” Elena’s face lit up with relief and joy. She rushed forward, enveloping Lila in a tight embrace. “You found me.”

Tears welled up in Lila’s eyes as she held Elena close. “I promised I would.”

Elena pulled back slightly, her expression turning serious. “We don’t have much time. The Nexus is unstable. We need to find a way out, and quickly.”
