Episode 4

CATARINA NARRATING

I tidied up our little house in the afternoon, while Lavinia was sleeping, taking her afternoon nap right after lunch. I cleaned and organized everything. Tomorrow I start work, taking two buses to get home. It will be very late and I will only want my bed, I'm sure of it.

I looked in the cupboard to see what I had to make for dinner. We're going to have to eat pasta again. We have pasta and sauce for the whole month. This time it will be just dinner, since the company provides lunch for the employees.

When Lavinia woke up, I made her a bottle. Gisele bought enough milk to last until the end of the month. While she was having her bottle, I was preparing our pasta.

"Hi, my loves, Godmother came to see the princess and the queen," Gisele came in already shouting. Lavinia is in love with her godmother.

While the two played on the sofa, I finished preparing the pasta. I already made the sauce and seasoned it with a little salt and oregano. That way, I feel like I'm eating delicious pasta.

"Girlfriend, I have some news to tell you. I got it," I said smiling and my eyes burning to cry with emotion.

"You got a job, is that right?" she asked, and I nodded yes.

Gisele hugged me. We celebrate together. It's been a dream of mine ever since Lavinia was born. We talked about the company, the benefits, and most importantly, there's a place there to leave my daughter.

"Let's celebrate with pasta," I said smiling and getting up.

When Gisele saw that it was just pasta, she scolded me and went to her house, which is next to mine, and brought protein. Chicken breast, already cooked, was very fragrant and tasty. We ate and talked. I told Gisele about the disdain of some women when they saw me celebrating the maid's vacancy.

"Girlfriend, don't mind those people. Unfortunately, the world is like that. Those who have a little more think they are better than those who don't," I agreed with her, because it's true.

Gisele works as a receptionist at a hotel, one of the largest in London. She has been working there for years and sometimes arrives sad, even crying, because of the humiliations she suffers from millionaire guests who humiliate the staff and people of lower class.

After dinner I washed the dishes while Gisele played with Lavinia, we talked for a bit and she left. My daughter and I went to bed, I'm very anxious, but I have to sleep. Tomorrow is my first day and I don't want to be late or fall over from not getting enough rest.

I breastfed Lavinia and she always sleeps breastfeeding. I also managed to sleep. I woke up with the alarm clock. I already woke up my little one and started getting her ready. I took a shower to wake up and got ready. I still had time to look in the mirror, to see myself in uniform. It even moved me. We left for the bus stop. We took the first bus, it was smooth. The second, likewise, passed quickly. The stop is in front of the company, which makes it very easy for me, as I'm carrying Lavinia, her bag and my bag.

My badge was already hanging around my neck. I entered the company. A lot of people coming in and out, I guess I wasn't even noticed. I went straight to the nursery to drop off my daughter. I hugged her tight and gave her a kiss. I filled out a form with some care for Lavinia, my name, the sector where I'm going to work and my phone number.

I went through HR as the lady told me yesterday. I registered my fingerprint and she accompanied me to the tenth floor, where I'm going to work today.

"Catarina, this is the top floor where employees have access. The next floor is the penthouse, the eleventh, where there is only the president's office. Employees are not allowed to go there, unless they are called. In your case, I believe never, only if it is to do some kind of cleaning" - when she said that, I was a little sad, but I didn't lower my head.

She showed me the entire floor. The rooms have the identification of each director and there is also the meeting room.

"The meeting room must always be clean and impeccable. Mr. Castela hates any kind of mess and dirt. We fired the other maid because of that. If you can't do the job, you're fired. Got it?" - she said and I answered.

"I already understood everything you said and don't worry, I will do the job" - I said looking into her eyes, an arrogant woman.

She scowled and left, telling me to do an excellent job. I started with the pantry. The morning went by fast. At lunchtime, I went to the cafeteria. I didn't even know where it was, so I just followed some other people. Glad they were going there. The food was delicious and there was no pasta. I ate quickly and ran to the nursery to see my daughter. I stayed with Lavinia for a while.

When I was leaving the nursery, I ran to the elevator. I didn't want to be even a second late to the tenth floor. I saw a man looking at me, blond, tall, strong. I was embarrassed and lowered my head. I got into the service elevator and, before the doors closed, I looked up. He was still looking at me.

As soon as I got to the pantry, there was the notation on the board. I went straight to the meeting room and packed everything up. I left the room clean to receive the directors or whoever was going to the meeting.

I went back to the pantry and started making coffee. It wasn't long before a secretary came in and asked for help serving the coffee and water.

We went to the meeting room. She took the tray with the coffee and I took the tray with the water. I asked how to do this, as it was the first time I had done this service. Unlike the other girl, she explained everything to me very politely.

I didn't look at the directors' faces. I just placed the water on the right side, as the secretary had instructed me. When I went to put the last bottle of water, it spun. I held it and felt a strong hand holding mine.

When I looked up, there was a pair of light brown eyes watching me, I swallowed hard, it was the same man who was looking at me in the elevator.
