The Project

“Young Lady!” dad says in an irritated voice as if he wasn’t normally irritated. “Why is why is Mr. Lin here?” My heart started racing, my life is over all because of that stupid maid. I will get my revenge. “Please learn to take care of your things dear.” dad says complaining. “Ouch, I’d prefer the pronouns He and His.” Shin interrupted. He’s done did it now. I closed my eyes and waited for dad to start cussing out Shin-Lin but all I could hear a small chuckle. I opened my eyes to find dad with a big grin on father’s face. I hadn’t seen him smile like this in… well come to think of it I’ve never seen him smile. “The maid explained to me how you two are working on a project in school together so when you finished your project you fell asleep. It makes me so happy to see how academic you are!” dad announces proudly. Looks like revenge will have to wait. We all make our way downstairs to eat breakfast when dad starts whispering in my ear.

“You know I wouldn’t be disappointed if you married Shin-Lin”

“Dad!”

“I know it’s too early but I want his DNA in my grandchildren.”

Dad doesn’t really understand when to stop. He doesn’t get that Shine and I are just friends, and we’ll (probably) never be more. We all sit down to a table full like a pancake heaven. I usually just get cereal because no one cooks for me and I’m too lazy to do it myself. This must be my father trying to impress Shine-Lin. By the looks of his eye popping out face expression I’m guessing it’s working. “So...” dad says “Tell me about this project you two are working on.” Well this was a backfire. “Well actually” Shin says with a mouth full “It’s about the Civil War and how Benjamin Franklin killed Hittler...” That’s not exactly what he said but I know it was something like that. Shin and dad talked through the whole breakfast about historical events. I’m surprised he knows about all this, social studies is not really his thing but he knows more than me! (everyone knows more than me). “Mr. Yan thank you for breakfast but Yu and I oughta get going.” Shin comments. “Come on Yu!” Shin gets up and heads for the drive way. I get up and follow him out like I know what’s going on. Once I see what he rode to get here I quickly turn around to head back inside.

“Where do you think you’re going little girl?”

“Don’t call me little girl. I’m going to ask dad to drive us to school.”

“Why can’t we ride on my motorcycle?”

I’m not sure I’d Shine is aware or not but I have a huge fear of motorcycles. “I’m not getting on that thing.” I say arguing. “Don’t worry!” He responds calmly. “You’re with me so nothing can happen to you, I promise”
