Chapter 9: Stirrings of Unease
Over the coming days, Lucas spent more time helping Martha at the apothecary, reconnecting with his past craft. Hazel was glad to see his memories restored, yet found herself missing his company.
One evening as they took supper, Hazel noted Lucas seemed distracted. "Is all well? You appear distant."
Lucas sighed. "Forgive me. It's only that being with Martha awakens so many feelings."
Hazel dropped her gaze, stomach knotting. She tried to sound cheerful. "Of course, she was like family to you once. It's natural you'd bond quickly."
Reaching out, Lucas tilted her chin up. "Please don't mistake my meaning. Martha will always hold a place in my heart for her part in my healing. But that part is in the past."
His eyes held hers with such tender warmth that Hazel's fears began to melt. "I know your care and friendship have come to mean everything to me, Hazel." He kissed her hand softly. "My place is wherever you are."
Her fears soothed, Hazel smiled, squeezing his hand in return. Wherever this new chapter led, having Lucas by her side was blessing enough.
As weeks passed, Hazel accompanied Lucas regularly to the apothecary, assisting him and Martha. Though she knew Lucas's heart, over time Hazel began noticing a change.
Martha's gazes lingered on Lucas as they worked, her smiles widening whenever he spoke. Lucas, engrossed in his studies, did not seem to notice.
One afternoon, as Lucas gathered supplies, Martha casually brushed some dust from his shoulder, letting her hand linger. An unsettled feeling rose in Hazel's chest.
When they returned home that night, Hazel stoked the fire, troubled. "Lucas...do you see how Martha regards you?"
Lucas sighed. "She cares for me as family, as you do. What cause have I given for jealousy?"
"No cause of your making," Hazel admitted. "But her heart holds more than kinship, I think. Have you not noticed her eyes?"
Lucas went silent in thought. Finally, he took Hazel's hands. "Even if you speak true, her care means little beside your own. I am yours, Hazel, now and always. No past attachment can change that."
Relieved, Hazel leaned into his embrace by the fire. Perhaps she'd imagined tensions where none existed. All that mattered was the bond between them, built on trust and care, come what may.
Days passed peacefully, yet unease still gnawed at Hazel's heart. One evening, as they walked fields under a setting sun, she stopped Lucas.
"Please, I must know the truth of your heart. Does any part of you still hold feeling for Martha?" Her eyes pleaded.
Lucas sighed. "I will not lie - in my memories' return, old affection stirred too. But that was the boy I was, not who I am with you."
He gazed at Hazel with tender sorrow. "Forgive me for not confessing sooner. I swore no past could sway me, yet clearly it troubles you still."
Gently, he lifted her chin. "Hazel, you lifted me from the fog and breathed life once more into my soul. Without your light, I would still be lost."
Taking her hands, Lucas vowed: "My place is at your side. If you'll have me still, I pledge my every day to proving where my heart truly lies - in your caring eyes alone."
Tears glistened on Hazel's lashes as Lucas embraced her tight. All was laid bare now between them, and in truth's light, her lingering doubts were put to rest at last.
