Opehila's POV
Today is finally the day where I get to go to my school, a place where I have to pretend and act childish. It's a routine I dislike, but unfortunately, I don't have any choice but to go along with it. After meticulously combing my hair and fixing my uniform, I stood in front of the mirror, double-checking to ensure that everything was in place. Satisfied with my appearance, I made my downstairs where my aunt was.
As I descended the stairs, the aroma of freshly brewed coffee filled the air. I spotted my aunt sitting at the table, sipping her morning dose of caffeine. Unlike most people, on workdays, she tends to skip breakfast. I'm not sure why she does that, but I've come to accept it as part of her routine. ''Good morning''. I greeted her, a smile accompanying my words. She replied with her usual warm smile in return. I sat down at the table and started eating the delicious breakfast my aunt had prepared for me. Meanwhile, she was absorbed in checking her laptop, juggling emails and other work-related tasks. My aunt holds a prominent position in a well-known company, serving as secretary to the owner. This demanding role keeps her incredibly busy during workdays. I couldn't help but feel impressed by her dedication to waking up early in the morning and still finding time to make breakfast for me.
Once I finished my meal and placed my dishes in the dishwasher, I excused myself and made my way to the bathroom. I took a moment to ensure that I hadn't made any mess, checking my appearance once again in the mirror. Content with my neat and presentable look, I left the bathroom and returned to my room to gather my belongings. As I checked my bag to make sure I had everything I needed for the day, I felt a sense of nervous anticipation bubbling within me. With everything in order, I headed back downstairs. ''Hey love, are you ready to go?''. My aunt asked, already slipping on her shoes and holding her bag, filled with papers and her laptop. I walked over to the shoe shelves, selected my school shoes and securely fastened them. With my backpack on my back, I replied. ''I'm ready''. With a smile of assurance. And with that, we proceeded to the garage, where my aunt unlocked the car while ensuring that all the doors to the house were securely locked. Once settled in the car, I fastened my seatbelt and glanced in my aunt's direction. She was making her way to the vehicle, and after buckling her seatbelt, she started the engine.
As the car eased out of the driveway, I peered out the window, observing the familiar sights passing by. The journey to my school was relatively short, thanks to its close proximity to my house. After a mere six minutes, we arrived at the school gates. I released my seatbelt, excitement and nerves intertwining, as I prepared to step into the unknown. Stepping out of the car, I stood beside my aunt, both of us taking in the flurry of activity around us. Parents and guardians accompanied their children, forming a procession towards the school entrance. This marked the beginning of their journey to acquire knowledge about the real world and develop independence for the future. My aunt turned to me, sensing the mixed emotions bubbling within me. ''Nervous?''. She asked, her voice filled with concern. Raising my head to meet her gaze, I mustered a smile before replying. ''A little bit''. I then shifted my attention toward the entrance door, eager to embark on this new chapter of my life. ''It's ok to be a little nervous''. My aunt responded, her tone laced with reassurance.
Together, we walked through the entrance, joining the stream of students and their families. The vibrant energy of the surroundings added to my anticipation, fueling a sense of adventure within me. We followed the signs guiding us to my classroom, my aunt's hand providing a comforting anchor as we navigated the corridors. Finally, we reached a door adorned with a colourful picture of a lion–a symbol of courage and strength. My aunt knocked on the door and it promptly swung open, revealing a friendly-looking lady, presumably my teacher. ''Oh, you must be Ophelia''. The teacher greeted me, recognizing my aunt's presence. Affirming her assumption, my aunt replied. ''Yes, she is. She'll be joining your class now''. They exchanged a few more pleasantries before the teacher returned to her desk, leaving just my aunt and me inside the classroom. Kneeling down to my level, my aunt asked. ''Are you ready to go in?''. I nodded, my voice filled with resolve. With a reassuring smile, I let her know that there was nothing to worry about. Hugging each other tightly, we convey our support and love. Finally, the time came for us to bid farewell. ''Have fun, okay''. My aunt said, her eyes brimming with affection. I nodded, absorbing her encouraging words. I watched as she walked away, casting one last glance through the classroom window to ensure my safety. Her wave of goodbye brought a surge of confidence, assuring me that I was not alone.
I entered the classroom, taking a deep breath as I surveyed the unfamiliar surroundings. Excitement and curiosity filled the room, as classmates greeted one another and settled into their seats. Finding an empty desk, I took a seat, ready to embrace the experiences that awaited me on this momentous first day of school. A mix of anticipation, hope, and a hint of nervousness swirled within me as I eagerly awaited what the day had in store. Little did I know that this would be the beginning of a transformative journey, one that would shape my future and leave an indelible mark on my life. As I sat in my seat, the reality of the situation slowly sank in. I would have to spend the entire day pretending to be childish, putting on an act just to fit in with my classmates. It felt exhausting already, but I had no choice. I knew I had to go along with it, at least for now. Not until he arrives.
The teacher began the class, and I tried my best to participate and engage with the other students. But inside, I couldn't help but feel a sense of disconnect. It was as if I was playing a role, constantly aware of the facade I had to maintain. I longed for genuine connections and conversations, but It seemed like I had to keep that part of myself hidden for now. During lunchtime, I found myself surrounded by kids talking about cartoons, toys, and other topics that didn't interest me. I tried to contribute to the conversation, but it felt forced. I yearned for deeper discussions and intellectual stimulation, but it seemed out of reach in this context. So I smiled and nodded, going along with their conversations, pretending to share their enthusiasm.
As the day went on, I found small moments of solace in art in art and music class. It was during those activities that I could momentarily lose myself in creativity and self-expression. I poured my emotions into my drawings and let the music transport me to another world. Those were the moments when I felt closest to being myself, even if just for a little while. When the final bell rang, signaling the end of the day, I packed my bag and made my way towards the exit. I saw my aunt waiting outside, and a wave of relief washed over me. I was grateful for her presence and support throughout the day. As we walked back to the car, my aunt asked how my first day went. I couldn't bring myself to fully express how I felt, so I simply replied. ''It was fine''. I didn't want to burden her with the truth, knowing she had her own responsibilities and worries.
As we drove back home, I gazed out the window, lost in my thoughts. I wondered how long I would have to keep up this act, how long I would have to suppress my true self . But I also reminded myself that sometimes we have to make temporary sacrifices for the sake of our goals. So, for now I would continue to play this role, hoping that one day I would find a place where I could truly be myself.
***********************************************************************
Dinner had come to an end, and the clock struck midnight. Auntie had already retired to her room, enveloped in the deep slumber that eluded me. This was the night I had been waiting for- the night I would venture to the hidden location where the enigmatic 'Golden Masters' resided. Being their apprentice held immense significance, as they wielded connections to influential figures in the realms of business, politics and even the criminal underworld. To secure my place as their heir, entrusted with their knowledge and achievements, I needed their trust. And to gain that trust, I would have to prove myself as a disciple worthy of their tutelage. Do not misunderstand me; I was no stranger to martial arts. I had spent the summer tirelessly honing my stamina and refining my skills, reaping the rewards of dedication. Now, I stood at the precipice of the ultimate test. The 'Golden Masters' would undoubtedly examine my abilities, seeking to ascertain if I possessed the mettle and prowess necessary for their teachings.
Venturing into the dimly lit corners of a dark and eerie alleyway was not a typical endeavor for a young girl of six. However, I was determined to defy conventional expectations and become the first child to embark on such a clandestine expedition under the cover of night, eluding the watchful gaze of any adults. Following a straight path towards the desolate alleyway and making a left turn, I navigated the labyrinthine streets with a sense of purpose. Ten minutes later, my destination finally materialized before me.
The building of 'The Golden Masters' stood before me, a mysterious and ominous structure hidden within the shadows of the night. Its facade was adorned with ancient symbols and inscriptions, a testament to the secret knowledge that resided within. With each step I took towards the entrance, a wave of excitement mixed with trepidation washed over me. This was my moment, my chance to prove myself worthy of becoming a disciple of the legendary masters. I knew that daunting challenges awaited me, but I was determined to surpass them all. As I pushed open the heavy wooden doors, a rush of adrenaline coursed through my veins. The interior of the building was dimly lit, with flickering candles casting eerie shadows on the walls. The air felt heavy with anticipation, as if the very walls held secrets waiting to be unlocked.
I was greeted by a tall figure dressed in traditional martial arts attire. He had a stern expression, his eyes piercing into my soul as if to question my intentions. I gulped nervously, but stood my ground. I had prepared for this moment and was ready to face any test thrown my way. ''Welcome''. The figure spoke in a low, commanding voice. ''You have reached the doorstep of the Golden Masters. But the path to becoming their disciple is not an easy one. Are you prepared to face the challenges that lie ahead?''.
With a determined nod of my head, I replied confidently. ''Yes, I am ready. I have trained tirelessly, honing my skills and strengthening my resolve. I am here to prove my worth''.
The figure nodded approvingly and gestured for me to follow. We walked through dimly lit corridors, each step fueling my anticipation. Along the way, I caught glimpses of other disciples engaged in rigorous training, their movements precise and fluid. It was a sight that both intimidated and inspired me. Finally, we entered a spacious training hall where a group of masters awaited. Their aura was palpable, radiating power and wisdom. I felt both a sense of awe and nervousness in their presence. This was the moment I had been waiting for, the opportunity to showcase my skills to these esteemed martial artists.
The first test began without warning. A master approached me and challenged me to a sparring match. I deflected his attacks with agility and precision, countering with calculated moves of my own. The room filled with a symphony of clashing swords and the occasional grunt. Each strike, each parry, brought me closer to earning their trust... As the hours passed, I found myself facing one challenge after another. My body ached, sweat drenched my brow and fatigue threatened to consume me. But my determination never wavered. I fought through the pain, pushed my limits and proved that I was worthy of their guidance.
Finally, after what felt like an eternity, I stood before the masters once again. Their expressions were unreadable, but I sensed a glimmer of approval in their eyes. One by one, they nodded, their silent approval a testament to my success. ''You have proven yourself''. One master finally spoke. ''You have shown strength, discipline, and an unwavering determination. We will teach you, guide you, and pass down the knowledge that has been handed down through generations. Welcome, young disciple to the Golden Masters.
A surge of joy and relief washed over me as the weight of their words sank in. I had accomplished what I set out to do, earning my place among the revered Golden Masters. The journey had just begun, but I was ready to embrace the challenges that lay ahead.
