Manhua (traditional Chinese: 漫畫; simplified Chinese: 漫画; pinyin: mànhuà) are Chinese-language comics produced in China and Taiwan. Whilst Chinese comics and narrated illustrations have existed in China in some shape or form throughout its imperial history, the term manhua first appeared in 1904 in a comic titled Current Affairs Comics (时事漫画; Shíshì Mànhuà) in the Shanghai-based newspaper Jingzhong Daily (警钟日报; Jǐngzhōng Rìbào).[citation needed]. Compared to Korean Manhwa, Manhua are greatly influenced by Japanese manga.
