Episode 8

After using the restroom, I made up my mind to step out and seek Jennie. I hunted high and low but to no avail. It was then that I caught sight of a man forcefully dragging her away amidst what seemed like a heated argument. As they neared the exit, I spotted the guy I'd kissed, jumping in to scuffle with the other man. Jennie tried to break it up when, out of nowhere, another man appeared, attempting to snap photos as if he were some sort of reporter. Jennie was scrambling to prevent the photographer from capturing the brawl, all while the two men continued to exchange blows.

In such a scene, I was clueless about what action to take until they were separated. Jennie grabbed the arm of the guy I'd kissed—whose name remained unknown to me—and began to converse with him. Then, she discussed things with the other man involved in the fight. But all the while, the guy I'd kissed and I engaged in an intense stare-down. Despite this, I tried to approach Jennie to grasp what was going on.

With barely a glance, she moved closer to me.

Ali: "What's happening, Jennie? I'm worried…I don’t understand what unfolded."

Jennie: "Calm down, it's just a misunderstanding. I have to go, but we need to talk later, Ali."

Ali: "You know you can trust me, whatever it is that's going on."

Jennie: "I know," she says before departing, but the guy I'd kissed stares at me intensely once more before following Jennie. Meanwhile, the other man seems familiar, and I overhear someone in the crowd mention that he’s the mayor's son.

After saying goodbye to the girls, I grab a taxi, my mind swirling with questions. Did I kiss Jennie's boyfriend? Who was the man forcibly holding her arm and arguing with her? What exactly is happening? When I arrived in town and saw Jennie again, I noticed a bruise on her arm that she tried to conceal.

I paid the cab fare, entered my house, shed my clothes, and stepped into the shower, no clearer about what to do or think. In this town, it seemed like everyone had something to hide, and they all arouse suspicion. But I couldn’t stop obsessing over the guy I'd kissed—who is he?

Slipping into my pajamas, I checked the time on my phone—it was three-forty in the morning. Deciding to call Jennie to check if she was alright, I began dialing her number until she answered.

Ali: "Hello? How are you?"

Jennie: "I’m fine. You don’t need to worry," came her response on the other line.

Ali: "You know you can call me any time if you need to talk."

Jennie: "Thanks. We'll talk later. Rest for now."

Ali: "You too," and the call ended.

Instantly, a message arrived.

"Let's meet at the market at noon." I replied right back: "I'll be there."

I plugged my phone in to charge and sleep eventually overcame me. At six o'clock, I was startled awake by the ringing of my phone—Tian was on the line, needing a medical examiner for a body discovery. I quickly showered despite a nagging headache, dressed, grabbed an orange juice, and left with my belongings in tow, texting Tian to send me the address. Fortunately, it wasn't too far. I drove to the address—a grand house surrounded by police cars. Tian was there, waiting with the equipment.

As I arrived, Tian approached.

Tian: "It appears to be a suicide. Follow me."

I did, greeting Detective Dylan Mollet upon entering the scene. Inside the house, everything seemed suspiciously orderly.

Reaching the backyard, the police kept their distance, murmuring, "What happened here, doctor?"

I continued with Tian, holding the forensic kit, not prepared for what I was about to witness. The sight of Jennie’s lifeless body, strung up by the neck, sent me into a state of shock and terror. Yet, I forced myself to stay composed to perform my duty. I had to focus; Jennie might have known something about my sister. By resolving Jennie’s case, I might unveil the mystery of my sister. Something told me the events were intertwined. Inspecting the victim's body, I searched for signs of petechial hemorrhaging in her eyes, evidence of strangulation. When I turned the body, I noticed abrasions on her back—an indication she'd been dragged prior to her death.

Scanning the surrounding officers, my gaze stopped on the guy who was conversing with Detective Mollet—I couldn't believe it was the same guy I'd kissed in the club. His green eyes met mine briefly before he turned back to the detective.

Tian informed me: "That's the victim's boyfriend. He found the body around 4:30 am."

Tian pointed towards the guy I’d kissed.

"His name is Kai Miller, owner of The Black Angel club." I was taken aback, recalling the waitress mentioning his connection to my sister. As our eyes met again, he turned away to continue his discussion with the detective.
