My guess had been spot on. It was 4th concubine Xiao Li. I have few memories of her, but all of which have been unpleasant. She had never been in any way kind to my mother and I, whenever she came trouble trailed shortly behind.
I take a small bite of my stale bread remembering that I heard not only her footsteps approach. Trying to look past my mother I tilt my body to the left to see past her back. I can now clearly see Xiao Li.
She had been wearing a tight fitting purple dress covered by a white fur, and purple silk coat. Wearing deep red lipstick with her red shoulder length hair wrapped around a long gold hair pin. Coming out of my daze, and finishing my bread I now clearly hear the conversation.
"Xiao Li, what is it that you want?" asks my mother.
"You know quite clearly what I want, I've said it before haven"t I? I want your position as Empress of the harem." She said with a smirk, her voice was slick and striking.
"I'll never do that, especially not for you. Besides, it's the Emperor's decision."
"Now Xue, you know as well as I do that you've been out of favor since your first brat was born, let alone the second." Xiao Li let out a soft chuckle.
She was referring to my older brother Qian Xue, he had drowned in the Li palace pond. Ruled as an accident, me and my mother had always suspected Xiao for what happened. As a result I grew to resent my father; As he'd done little to help prove my mother right or our palace from falling into poverty.
"Well, if you really refuse to forfeit yourself, I guess further force is required."
I finally see who had been those extra pairs of footsteps, imperial guards.
"Apprehend her on account of the murder of Tiali Xue." That's my name! The guards begin to approach us, my mother backing up slowly before quickly turning and grabbing my wrist.
