What Have I Become

What Have I Become

chapter one : the accident

The sound of screeching tires filled the air as the car spun out of control. Emma’s heart raced as she tried to regain control of the vehicle, but it was too late. The car slammed into a tree, and everything went black.

When Emma woke up, she was lying in a hospital bed. Her head was pounding, and she could barely move. She looked around the room, trying to figure out what had happened. Then it hit her – the accident.

Emma tried to sit up, but a sharp pain shot through her chest. She groaned and lay back down, closing her eyes. She couldn’t believe what had happened. One minute she was driving home from work, and the next she was lying in a hospital bed.

As she lay there, Emma began to think about her life. She had always been a successful businesswoman, but she had never been happy. She had always felt like something was missing, but she didn’t know what it was.

Emma’s thoughts were interrupted by the sound of the door opening. A doctor walked in, followed by a police officer. Emma’s heart raced as she wondered what was going on.

“Ms. Thompson, I’m Detective Johnson,” the officer said. “I need to ask you a few questions about the accident.”

Emma nodded, her heart racing. She didn’t know what to say. She couldn’t remember anything about the accident.

“Can you tell me what happened?” the detective asked.

“I don’t remember,” Emma said, her voice shaking.

The detective looked at her for a moment, then nodded. “Okay, we’ll come back later. Get some rest.”

Emma lay back down, her mind racing. She couldn’t remember anything about the accident. She didn’t even know how she had ended up in the hospital.

As she lay there, Emma began to feel a sense of dread. She didn’t know what was going on, but she knew that something was wrong. She felt like she was losing control of her life, and she didn’t know what to do.

Over the next few days, Emma’s memory slowly began to return. She remembered driving home from work, and she remembered the sound of screeching tires. But she still couldn’t remember what had caused the accident.

The police continued to investigate, but they couldn’t find any evidence of foul play. Emma’s car had simply spun out of control, and there was no indication that anyone else had been involved.

As Emma’s physical injuries began to heal, she began to focus on her mental state. She felt like she was losing her mind. She couldn’t remember anything about the accident, and she was plagued by nightmares.

One night, Emma woke up screaming. She had dreamed that she was driving down a dark road, and a figure had stepped out in front of her car. She had swerved to avoid the figure, and that was when she had lost control of the vehicle.

Emma knew that the dream was just a figment of her imagination, but it felt so real. She couldn’t shake the feeling that something was wrong.

One day, Emma was going through her belongings when she found a journal that she had kept years ago. She began to read through it, hoping to find some clue as to what was going on.

As she read, Emma began to realize that she had been unhappy for a long time. She had always felt like something was missing, but she had never been able to put her finger on it.

Then she came across an entry that sent chills down her spine. It was from the day of the accident.

“I don’t know what’s wrong with me,” Emma had written. “I feel like I’m losing my mind. I keep having these nightmares, and I can’t shake the feeling that something terrible is going to happen.”

Emma sat there, staring at the page. She couldn’t believe what she was reading. Had she known that something was going to happen? Had she been trying to warn herself?

Over the next few days, Emma’s memories began to flood back. She remembered swerving to avoid a figure in the road, but she couldn’t remember who or what it was.

Then, one day, she saw a news report that sent chills down her spine. A man had been killed in a hit-and-run accident just a few miles from where she had crashed her car.

Emma’s heart raced as she realized what had happened. She had hit the man, and she had panicked. She had driven away, leaving him to die in the road.

Emma knew what she had to do. She went to the police and confessed to what had happened. She was arrested and charged with vehicular manslaughter.

As she sat in her cell, Emma couldn’t help but feel relieved. She had finally found the missing piece of her life. She had become a killer, but she had also become someone who was willing to face the truth.
