I stopped and took the key out of my pocket. And with a deep breath I unlocked it and went inside.
There was just yelling… I blocked it out and went into my room. If my mom hadn't noticed me, yet maybe I won't get beat… but I doubt it.
She's beating my older brother right now.
Probably because I didn't get home when she wanted me to.
Taesu
(I should probably check on Taeji.)
Taeji is my younger sister. I have three siblings but only one sister.
I guess the three of us boys treasure her.
I left my room and headed to hers.
All I heard was muffled yells. They were probably screaming profanities at each other. That's what tended to happen when she was like this.
I knocked on Taeji's door and entered.
She was curled up in a ball on the floor shaking. She never really liked yelling. I went over to her and bent down beside her.
Taesu
*Quietly* Hey... Taeji...
I spoke softly to avoid startling her.
There was no response. I said it again when suddenly, she picked her head up, laid it on my shoulder, and hugged me tightly.
They were still yelling outside.
My older brother didn't normally take the beatings and when he didn't all hell went loose.
My younger brother is in middle school, 7th grade. He is probably getting home soon. Or he's outside on the steps of the building.
I heard the front door open, then close.
I heard my mom's footsteps approach the room. They stopped outside the door.
Tae's Mom
*Shouts* Taemin!
Taemin was my Hyung. The front door opened, and closed. I'm guessing he left.
It was Taeil, my younger brother.
The footsteps traveled away from the door.
Now that I think about it, mom wasn't always like this.
I guess it started when dad died.
He died while she was pregnant with Taeji.
Taesu
*Quietly* Hey Taeji.
She let out a small noise.
Sort of like a hum but quieter.
She knew how to speak, and we know she can.
I guess she stopped talking when she was about 6.
Taesu
*Quietly* I'm going to go get Taeil. Ill be back. You stay here.
She cuddled in closer to me and made another sound.
She didn't want me to leave.
I've always been the one to take care of my siblings. Even my hyung.
Taesu
*Quietly* How about I go get Taeil and bring him back in here with you.
She reluctantly agreed and, trying to hide my fear, went out to get Taeil.
Him and Mom were yelling. I wasn't paying much attention.
Taesu
*Yells* For fcks sake! Listen to me!
They both turned to look at me.
Tae's Mom
Taesu? When did you get here?
Mom looked at me confused. At the same moment Taeil had run up and hid behind me.
Taesu
Please stop yelling. Haven't you had enough?
I tried to bargain with her, but she wouldn't hear it. She started yelling more profanity at me and I ended up covering Taeil ears.
I don't know why I did. Maybe it was to try to block the noise out from my ears.
She continued to yell, and I took Taeil and walked back to Taeji's room. She was still on the floor… shaking. Taeil went running up to her to comfort her.
Mom was still yelling. Not sure what it was about. I had blocked it out. I knew if I tried to stop her it would just urge her on more. So I stayed silent. I'm pretty sure she was calling me obscene names and saying how bad of a child I was. And that was based on my siblings' faces.
I still had the yelling tuned out, and my back was turned to the door. We stayed like that for a good 10 minutes before mom finally let up.
After that I sat next to my siblings and hugged them both. Taeji was still crying and Taeil looked as if he was about to.
I went to stand but was met with a whimper from Taeji. She was clinging to my shirt.
Taesu
Would you like me to stay here with you?
She nodded slightly. Taeil went to leave but she stopped him too.
She tugged on his shirt twice, it was her way of saying "you", then she pointed to the bed behind me.
Her room has two day beds.
One was beside her desk and across from her dresser. The other was above her desk, on a loft.
Taeil
You want me to sleep there?
Taeil
Then where will Hyung sleep?
She looked around the small room.
Taesu
I'll sleep on the floor. It's fine.
She turned and looked at me in disbelief, then shook her head "no".
Taesu
Then where would you like me to sleep?
She looked around again. Then pointed to her bed.
Taesu
But that's your bed.
Taesu
Do you want me to lay with you?
Taesu
Oh… ok. Well we will go get changed into our pajamas, and you should too. But we'll be back.
Me and Taeil left the room and went to get changed.
