I knew what would happen if I got dragged in.
I knew I must stay calm when I was in danger. The man relaxed when he
saw me stop struggling. But the next moment, I bit his hand so hard.
"Ouch! You bitch!" The man cried out in pain, cursing. That
voice was absolutely strange to me.
There was only one thought in my mind, "Run."
I dashed forward with all my strength. I wanted to get rid of him before
he reacted. However, I was in high heels. There was no street light on this
road, and I fell on the roadside. My ankle acutely hurt, but I had no time to
check it. I got up from the ground and ran.
The man was almost there. Luckily, a cab drove from behind. I hobbled
over and stopped the cab.
"Damn it!" The driver cursed. He was probably scared to death
by my lunatic behavior.
The driver was a nice old man. After he saw my panic look, he realized
what might have happened to me, and then, he softened his tone.
"Kid, don't be afraid. You are safe now. When you feel better, you
can tell me where to go."
After a while, I told him my address, and then, I collapsed in the back
seat.
The cab stopped downstairs. I thanked the old man and got out of the
car. Still, in shock from what had happened, I took a few deep breaths before
going upstairs.
It really scared me, so I took the next day off. William would wait for
me every day. After a small chat, I urged him to go to bed. I looked at myself
in the mirror. My eyes were totally blank. I was too tired and I washed my face
and fell into bed.
I smelt the unique fragrance in the room with my eyes shut. It helped
calm the nerves and relieve fatigue. Those fragrances were all made by myself.
I was born sensitive to smells. When I was in senior high school, there
were some rich kids in my class. I could identify their perfume every time I
walked by them. Sometimes, I even followed them to find out the perfume brand.
They regarded me as a freak, but I didn't really care.
I didn't remember their names and even their faces blurred to me now,
however, I could remember their smells.
The only one that impressed me was a boy two years older than me 'cause
he also liked the deployment of perfumes. At that time, I always felt that I
was different from others, and I didn't belong to the same world because of my
family. I attended class alone, ate alone, and went home alone. I was always
accompanied by my shadow.
So I still recalled that in a puzzle. How could I talk to a strange
senior happily and even blend perfumes with him?
After that, a girl who had a crush on the boy in my class saw us talking
about perfumes. The next day, the whole class knew that a poor girl tried to
seduce a rich boy. That was when I knew his family was rich.
My classmates made fun of me and my naive dream. I talked back bravely
at that time. However, I probably should join them now. They were right. I was
naive.
I avoided meeting with the boy after that. I wanted no more trouble
because of him.
Later on, I dropped out of school and started to work. The day I left
school, I dreamed of a picture. It was a normal company, and there were all
kinds of spices on the table. It was a sweet dream.
My room was decorated very clean. There was only a bed, a chair, a
dressing table, and a cabinet full of perfumes.
I fantasized about working hard, earning enough money, and going to
college. After graduation, I would work as a researcher in a small business,
concentrating on blending perfumes. Unfortunately, it was just fantasy. The
only thing that comforted me was that William went to college. And I didn't
give up my dream.
I spent time blending spices every day, trying to find more flavor and
function. The perfume to me was a miracle. It could eliminate odor, calm the
mind, attract the opposite sex, and even change the mood.
I woke up early in the morning. The rays of sunshine spread on the bed
through the window. The smell in my room made me feel soothed. It was Saturday,
and William didn't have any class.
"Sis, breakfast is almost done."
"I'm coming."
I sat up in a daze. "Ouch..." The soreness and pain
overwhelmed me. I almost fell back into my bed.
I used all my strength against Leopard the day before. Muscle soreness
seemed right to me. I then entered the bathroom. My face in the mirror was pale
because of my late nights.
I washed my face and regained some energy. Seeing William was busy with
the breakfast, I felt warm in my heart.
We rented this apartment with good rent. The money I made could easily
afford the rent and living costs. It was a pretty good life, but I still had
one more dream, the deployment of perfumes.
"What's on your mind?" I was interrupted by William. I looked
at him seriously and suggested.
"Will, what do you think if we run a flower shop? I can do my
perfume research that way."
William couldn't do heavy work out of the sequela and he complained a
lot about that. A flower shop might help him feel better. At least, he wouldn't
consider himself a freeloader.
William thought about it and nodded, "Good idea. I can help you
with the shop."
"You're so cute. Listen, I'm happy as long as you are by my side,
okay?"
"I know. By the way, what happened to you yesterday? I was worried
before you got back. Something happened to you, right?" That was not a
questioning tone.
William and I were related by blood. He would have a hunch about things
that happened to me. But I really didn't want him to worry about me. I wanted
him to have a normal life.
After some thoughts, I lied, "I met a robbery. Luckily, I was quick
on my feet."
William furrowed after hearing my words. He came up to me right away and
checked my wound. I sprained my ankle yesterday, and it hurt badly.
He fetched medicine and started to massage my ankle. I was gratified to
see him caring about me.
"You stay at home for the rest. I will view the stores today."
I smiled and said, "It's okay. I just sprained my ankle. It's no
big deal. I finally had a day off. I want to go with you."
"Fine. We'll go together." William couldn't stand my sad face.
After breakfast, we came back to the room to get dressed.
Upon opening the wardrobe, I was disappointed. The clothes were neatly
arranged, but no one was decent enough. They were all cheap goods and at least
three years old.
Finally, I picked up a red and white spotted dress. The chiffon was
almost threadbare. I looked in the mirror and sighed.
"Carol, are you ready? We're leaving," William urged.
I tidied my dress and went downstairs.
William was in a white T-shirt and black jeans which almost washed to
white. But he never cared about that. I smiled at him, but soreness spread in
my heart.
"Don't dawdle. Let's go," William said and then took me out.
