The Obsessive Duke Desires Me
Chapter 5 - Long Night
After slowly gaining the trust of the children, a huge carriage rolled up and a man jumped out of it.
The children immediately felt wary again.
Liana Brekker
Don't worry, he's a good man as well.
Liana Brekker
The carriage that he has will take you to a well-funded orphanage on the outskirts of the city.
Liana Brekker
There, you'll be fed, clothed and you'll be able to play all day long or study whatever you'd like.
Slowly, one of the boys got up and the others did too. I cut the rope rubbing against their wrists and allowed them to jump in.
Nick pointed up at the palace, where we could see the gates open and men on horses with torches were slowly riding down the street.
Liana Brekker
Okay, let's go! Hold on tight, guys!
I jumped in behind them and shut the doors before Nick took his place driving the cart.
Cracking his whip, the horses immediately moved off and we began rushing through the capital's empty streets.
The children seemed nervous and some of the girls were screaming every time there was a bump.
These children... they remind me of myself. Alone, cold, not knowing what will happen next...
I smiled and slowly knelt down on the floor, taking out my dice which had long reverted back to its original form.
Liana Brekker
Does everyone want to see a magic trick?
The children seemed confused, but when they saw the dice glow before slowly elongating into a sausage-like shape.
It then flattened and transformed into a glowing glass sword.
Their eyes looked at it in awe.
Liana Brekker
This is a magical artifact, the only one in the world that creates anything that the user desires.
With the glow of the glass sword lighting up the inside of the carriage, the children felt a little less stressed and enjoyed touching the warm magical artifact.
Eventually, the carriage came to a stop and they all became nervous once more.
Poor souls, look at how nervous they look.
Suddenly, the doors opened and they yelped again.
However, instead of Nick opening up the door, a figure that I didn't expect to see shone in the moonlight.
I blinked a few times, but quickly regained my composure.
Liana Brekker
I thought that you were out on some important expedition that was supposed to last two months.
Cal
I finished ahead of schedule and thought that I'd surprise you.
Liana Brekker
Consider me surprised.
I jumped out of the carriage and beckoned the children forward.
Cal
If only you were that gentle with me...
I nudged him in the chest, making him fall back a little and painfully cough.
Cal
Are you really sure that you're a lady?
Nick Laneson
My Lady, the-
Nick Laneson
M-My Lord? You've returned.
Cal
Yes I have. Is it that surprising how efficient I am?
Nick Laneson
T-That wasn't my intention, My Lord. My apologies...
Cal
You know me, I can't stay away for long.
My life is full of twists and turns, and my actions have greatly caused the novel to deviate from its original fate.
My name is Liana Brekker, formally known as Liana Ashbrooke. Six years ago, I transmigrated into the R18 novel that my friend Rell wrote.
I took on the life of my namesake protagonist, Liana Brekker, raised by her father in the original novel and slain by her ex-fiancée, the Prince, after giving birth to the Duke, Bastian Callais' child.
But in this version, I have deviated from any roads that might lead to my death.
I have sworn off romance of any kind and I've built up reputation amongst the commonfolk under the name "Midnight Raven".
Equipped with a magical, one-of-a-kind artifact, I save children and lives while dealing with crooks and gathering intel for my uncle at the same time.
There are three men apart from my uncle who know of my identity.
One is Martin, my instructor and mentor. He taught me everything I needed to know about being swift in the shadows.
The second person is Cal. Whether or not that's his real name, I'll never know.
But he approached me a year ago asking if he and I could collaborate.
In the end, he financed this entire orphanage and its education program and gave me this ancient artifact as a gift.
I was wary at the start, because no one simply gives away something as valuable as a magical artifact.
But he proved himself time and time again, and is now quite the asset, though I still don't trust him completely.
And then there's Nick, his aide and the person he lends to me when he's away on "business" or those vague "expeditions" of his...
He's easier to deal with than Cal.
Cal
Shouldn't you be at home, getting your beauty rest?
Cal
You know that Nick could have done this himself.
Nick Laneson
M-My Lord, please don't overestimate my limited capabilities.
He ignored his subordinate and turned to look at me.
Liana Brekker
Your concern is not a requirement of our partnership.
Cal
Well then, I won't say another word. Shall I ride you home?
I turned around and jumped up onto a horse.
And just like that, I left before even giving Cal an answer.
It's better like that. Worrying about each other means that we care, and in a partnership like this where one could throw the other under the bus, caring is simply a hindrance.
