She just wished Nelly was a normal girl, less unworldly, would behave <>, find a friend like Anton Weißenberger, the rabbi's son, and prepare for her upcoming bat mitzvah. Nelly's Bat Mitzvah, the ceremonial reception that introduces young people as members to the Jewish community, is scheduled to take place in eight weeks.

In the life of the future scientist there is no place for God, religion or the Torah, which leads to constant friction between Nelly and her mother. But, as she herself says, Nelly is not the only victim of Lucy's pointy tongue: << After visiting Berlin in the early 1980s, she found so much to complain about in the city that she decided to stay here and make an art out of her nagging to make. >>

Lucy complains about everything, about the high rents, about the rats in the basement (which her husband claims are mice), about the dog piles on the sidewalks and and and. Most of all, she complains about her husband, a clarinetist. Benny looks irresistibly good and is an excellent musician, but rarely has a job.

Lucy is therefore forced to make a living from the family's income as a journalist.
