Episode 4

...Aziel....

I was in the middle of the engagement party, having a great time with Dakota, when the police knocked on the door.

The music stopped and everyone present watched curiously.

My father-in-law approached the officers.

"Can I help you?" he asked with confusion.

"Good afternoon, is this the Voinescu residence?" the officer inquired, and my father-in-law nodded.

"Yes, it's here. Is something wrong?" Luke interjected.

The officer looked up and replied.

"There was an accident," he informed.

For some reason, I felt discomfort inside.

Dakota hugged me, kissing my neck trying to get my attention. And she did, instantly.

I focused my attention on the woman I loved.

That's how it was until the officer spoke again.

"Is Miss Aspen Voinescu your daughter?"

At the question, my body tensed, bringing me back to reality.

My attention quickly refocused on the officers again.

"Yes, she's my daughter," my father-in-law replied. "Why?"

"Mr. Voinescu, your daughter was in a car accident."

Upon hearing these words, I could feel everything around me being destroyed in a matter of seconds.

Now I'm here, at the hospital.

Pacing back and forth waiting for news of my son's mother.

Dakota is with me.

Her parents and siblings too.

Calen is at my parents' house, since as soon as Carolina heard about the accident, she came here quickly.

I've been here for hours and Aspen still hasn't woken up.

Today was supposed to be my engagement party. I was supposed to be celebrating with Dakota.

Why does Aspen always have to ruin my happiness?

I observed the others present, Dakota was on her cell phone doing who knows what.

Ethan and Kyle were surprisingly very anxious, waiting for news of Aspen.

Luke, as always, kept his face expressionless. But I noticed, his eyes were red from holding back tears.

My gaze then rested on my in-laws.

He was stoic, as always. And she was trembling, muttering to herself.

I didn't understand what she was saying, but I could catch something.

<>.

I think it's the first time I've seen my mother-in-law like this, so upset and hurt. Especially for Aspen, since it's no secret that her family never loved her.

I guess the idea of losing her daughter softened her heart, at least a little.

"Aspen!" I heard Carolina shout, and quickly looked in the direction where Aspen had been taken.

And there she was, she had bandages in some places on her body.

Cuts on her face and also on her legs.

But, apparently nothing serious.

Still, seeing my now ex-wife like that made my heart ache.

Because if something bad happens to Aspen, how am I supposed to explain it to my son?

I approached her and extended my hand, trying to touch her.

"Aspen, how are you feeling...?" I was shocked to see her pass by me, ignoring my presence.

I turned around incredulously, had it been a mistake?

Yes, it must be that, since Aspen would never ignore me.

I saw Carolina break down before her, hug her and start crying.

Aspen returned the gesture, reassuring her, not wanting her to be sad.

Yes, that was Aspen, even now being hurt, she cares more about others than herself.

"Aspen..." I took her wrist gently. "How are you? Are you feeling well?" I spoke in a surprisingly soft tone.

I thought that way she would look at me as she always did.

With those blue eyes full of love, longing, and devotion.

But what I received was a deadly and empty look.

I shuddered at those eyes.

She pulled away from my grasp.

"Where is my son?" she asked coldly.

I was in shock, it was like seeing a completely new person.

"He's at my parents' house," I informed her.

She nodded and began to walk away.

"Aspen, honey!" Her mother spoke, standing up.

Aspen stopped, looking at everyone over her shoulder.

I wasn't the only one, everyone present was shocked by those eyes.

She was Aspen, but now she looked different.

So empty.

It was like seeing an empty shell of what my wife once was.

"Where are you going? You can't leave like that, you need to rest," my mother-in-law continued, earning a scoff from Aspen.

"I'm going to get my son," she blurted out without emotion.

My chest shrank.

"I'll take you, just let me..."

"No," she interrupted me. "I don't want anything from you, from any of you. You are dead to me," she declared, and left, followed by Carolina.

We were paralyzed.

<>

I could see the surprise on everyone's face, even Dakota's.

...****************...

...Aspen....

I opened my eyes and closed them quickly as the light bothered me.

I tried to move but everything hurt.

"Aspen... Can you hear me?" A female voice called my name.

It was a nurse.

"Ugh..." I groaned. "What happened?"

"You had an accident," she informed me.

An accident...

Of course, it was when I remembered everything.

The divorce.

The engagement party between my sister and my ex-husband.

That son of a bitch got engaged to Dakota and it hasn't even been a week since our divorce.

The mockery of my relatives.

The rejection I have been exposed to all my life.

I remembered everything.

That's when I decided to give up on them.

It's over, I don't love them anymore.
