Chapter : Two

ARIANA

"Good morning Alex, I'm ready for school" I said knocking on his door

"Alright, I'll be downstairs soon," Alex replied. His voice was sounding grumpy, is he still in bed?

I walked back downstairs and ate my dinner. Thirty minutes passed and he was yet to come.

"Alex, I'm getting late for Christ sake" I yelled.

"If you can't wait then go to school." He replied, rolling his eyes.He walked past me to the refrigerator and took a bottle of water.

I ignored him and walked outside to wait for the car.

"Alex, Jeffrey is a cool guy" I said

"Is that what you think?" He replied

"Yeah, I'm not going to get married to him immediately, we can start by being friends" I said

"Alright just know that if he hurts you, I will not take it easy on him" Alex warned

"Thanks bro, you're the best" I pouted and hugged him.

Thirty minutes later, we arrived at my school. I got down from the car and walked to my class. Alex drop me at school every day before going to work.

I prefer riding with him than the other drivers. He's fun and I'm so glad to have him as a brother.

Most girls in my school are crushing on him and they try to befriend me so that they can get access to him but I just laugh because I know that's not possible.

KIMBERLY

"This is your first day at work, please be careful , immediately the boss arrives, take his briefcase and clean his chair, before you serve him his coffee." Mark instructed

"But I'm not his P.A" I grumbled

"You talk to much, let's see if you will spend a day here without getting fired" Mark hissed

"Alright, let's see, " I said and walked to my office.

My office was in the same room as his. But mine was at the end of the room with a table, chair, printer and other work equipment.

I sat down on my seat and waited patiently for him to come. I checked the wall clock, it was past ten, any reasonable boss would have been at work by now.

I don't blame him though, he is rich....

I was still thinking and I didn't notice he was already in the office.

"The new secretary I guess" His voice echoed in the room and my phone fell from my hand in shock.

"Good morning Sir" I greeted bowing politely.

"Morning" He replied and sat on his chair, oh I was supposed to clean that

I quickly rushed to the coffee machine and brewed his coffee.

"Coffee sir" I said

"Oh thanks, drop it on the table" He replied and I did as I was told

"Help me type this documents and send it to the email address on this paper" He said and I bowed

HANNAH

"Hey, stop being idle, do something" I yelled at the sale's girl

"Ok ma'm " She replied and took a rat to clean the windows

"Good" I said and looked at my wrist watch

"Oh God, I can't wait for lunch" I giggled.

Alex and I don't work in the same place. He opened a boutique for me and I'm making a lot of money from it.

"I can't eat lunch alone, I'll need to call Alex so that we can eat lunch together."

ARIANA

"Hello Jeff" I whispered

"Ariana, how are you doing?"

"I'm fine, why would you call me now, I'm in school" I said

"Oh sorry about that, I just wanted to tell you that I will be picking you up when you close" He said

"Oh, you don't need to bother" I said

"I wanted us to have lunch together" Jeffrey said

"Alright, see you then, bye" I quickly ended the call when I saw Julia and Sonia coming.

Julia and Sonia are my best friends.

"Ari, what are you doing there?" Julia asked

"Nothing, I just..." I stuttered

"You were??"

"Let's go to the library"I smiled

"Alright" They chorused and we walked towards the library. My heart was beating fast, I didn't want them to know I would be getting married soon, I don't know how they are going to react to the news.

ALEX

My phone was ringing non stop but I didn't want to pick it up. I knew it was Hannah, I had a lot of work to do so I'll talk to her later.

"Sir, your phone is ...." The secretary said

"Yeah, I'll talk to her later" I said

"Maybe it's something urgent" She replied

"Hannah has nothing serious to say" I replied

"You should just..."

"Alright" I sighed and picked up the phone.

"See, she has nothing serious to say, she's bringing lunch for me" I said

"That's because she cares"

"Errrm, sorry what's your name?" I asked

"Kimberly Taylor"

"Oh, Kim" I smiled and continued my work. Funny enough, I didn't know the name of my secretary all thanks to my obsessed girlfriend.

MELODY

"Cade, lunch is ready" I said

"I don't want to eat" He replied

"Common Cade, I spent a lot of time preparing this, it's your favorite, " I said, putting an arm on his shoulder.

"When will mum come?" he asked with teary eyes.

"Mum will come tomorrow okay, she'll get plenty of toys for you" I smiled

"Okay" he said and I kissed his cheek

"Now come and eat. Fried eggs and plantain" I said tickling him

"No stop, it's enough" He said laughing and running while I chased him.

Cade is a sweet little boy, he makes me happy even if he isn't my son. I don't know why Kimberly refuse to let him live with her. I have tried to talk to her countless times but she won't listen, her mind is already made up

KIMBERLY

"Oh, I'm famished" I yawned as I sat on the sofa.

"How was work today?" Mum asked

"Fine mum" I replied and walked to the kitchen but there was no food.

"Mum, there's no food" I said

"Yeah, I'm tired of cooking for you, I want to cook for my grandson" Mum said

"Not again mum" I said and walked to my room to avoid an argument.

I sat on my bed and went through Cade's picture in my phone and tears streamed down my face.

"Cade, I want you here with me , but you will only add to my pains" I said and wiped my eyes with my handkerchief.

KIMBERLY

My phone began to ring and I looked at it. It was dad calling

"Hello, dad" I said

"Kimberly, are you okay?" Dad asked. That was my dad for you. He always knew when I was sad or happy from the sound of my voice.

"It's about Cade" I sniffed

"Kim, I know you're having a tough time but please think carefully before you make any decisions" Dad said

"Thank you Dad" I smiled

"How about the job you went for"

"Oh, I forgot to tell you, I got the job" I said and Dad laughed

"That's my girl" He said

We talked for almost thirty minutes before I went to bed.

I miss my dad so much even though we are not in the same house. My dad and Mum divorced a few years ago but I can still visit him anytime I want to.

ARIANNA

"Ari, who's this cute guy" Sonia gushed

"Oh my gee, he's hot," Julia said, snatching my phone from my hand. I watched them gush over Jeffrey without uttering a word

"Can you give me my phone now??"

"We aren't giving you unless you tell us who he is" Julia said

"He's my friend" I replied

"Are you sure or there's nothing else " Sonia smiled

"No, we're just friends" I said

"Alright... enough of the pressing, let's do what we are here for" Julia said and dropped my phone on the table before coming to join Sonia and I on the bed.

We have a test tomorrow so they came to read and also spend the night at my place.

HANNAH

I stared at my face in the mirror and giggled. It's spotless and that's how I want it to be.

I have always dreamt of the day I would be standing beside Alex in my white wedding gown.

"Jeez, I can't wait" I laughed and my phone beeped

I stretched my hand and picked it up.

"Hey, Hannah, it's me Paxton, you remember" I read and bit my lips trying to remember. I checked the profile picture and gasped

Woah, Paxton just messaged me.

I quickly typed back my reply.

Paxton is my high school crush and he moved to France to further his education. We lost contact and now he's messaging me.

FEW DAYS LATER

KIMBERLY

It was Saturday and I needed to go and visit Cade as I promised. Working with Alex wasn't as difficult as I thought.

He's always on his laptop and phone and he only calls me when he needs my attention.

But the problem was his girlfriend, anytime she comes to the office she always gives me suspicious glares and asks unnecessary questions.

Ugggh, I hate it when she does that. She has a cool and rich boyfriend. I wonder why she's so problematic.

I dressed up and went to the mall for a little shopping, I got some new clothes, chocolates and toys for Cade.

MELODY

I smiled as I watched Cade move around the sitting room anxiously.

"Cade, your mum will be here soon" I said

"I know, I want to be the first to welcome her when she comes" He smiled

"Awwwn, I wish I had a mum too " I laughed

"Your mum isn't as beautiful as mine, my mum is the best" Cade said and I nodded. I won't argue with him. Kimberly is truly beautiful in heart and face but the birth of Cade changed everything.

She turned from a lively and jovial person to a secluded and humorless lady.

"Aunt melody, I heard a knock on the door, is that mum?" Cade asked

"I think so, go and check" I replied and he rushed to the door.

ALEX

I checked my wrist watch, it was past two in the afternoon. Hannah is supposed to be here by now.

I tried calling her but couldn't get through. I sighed and continued playing my PS game.

Saturday is a free day so I play games at home and go out for lunch with Hannah and sometimes we go to the beach or shopping.

KIMBERLY

I knocked on the door and it opened slowly.

"Mum" Cade called and hugged me tightly

"My baby" I cooed and kissed his hair

"I miss you mummy" He said

"I miss you too" I replied and kissed his cheek.

I carried him in my arms and walked inside the house

"Hey Kim" Melody smiled and hugged me.

"How are you doing" I asked

"We're good " She laughed and we sat on the couch.

"Mum, are you going back today?" Cade asked

"Cade, I bought you chocolates, toy's and new clothes" I said and gave him the bag

"Wow, thanks Mum" he said and pecked my cheeks

"Cade, can you take them to your room, I want to talk with mummy" Melody asked and he nodded, dragging the bag with him and laughing.

"How's your work?" Melody asked

"Fine, not as stressful as I thought" I replied and we laughed

"Thank you for taking care of Cade" I said

"He's just like my son too, but the poor boy misses you so much" Melody said

"I know, but I can't let him stay with me for now" I said and she nodded

"I understand how you feel, how's mum" she asked

"Mum's good, always pestering me" I replied and we laughed

"Cade's inhaler got finished last night" melody said and my heart skipped a beat.

"Don't worry, I already ordered a new one from the hospital" Melody said and I hugged her.

"Thank you so much" I said crying

"Don't cry, it's gonna be fine" She said, rubbing my back.

Cade is an asthmatic child and that's one of the reasons I don't want him to stay with me. I would panic anytime his attacks started.

I stayed till evening and we had a lot of fun, playing and I helped him with his assignments. I prepared dinner and we ate then I made sure her slept before I leave because he won't let me go that easily

"Take care Kimberly" Melody said

"Yes I will" I replied

"Try to smile more, you aren't carrying the world's problem on your shoulders" melody advised

"I will, bye thanks for taking care of him" I said and she smiled

"I will always do anything for you Kim" She replied and I boarded a cab to take me home.

Melody and I have been best friends since high school and our friendship continued up till now. She's the one who helped me when I was hurt and going through a lot. I will forever be grateful to her.
