Simple story
When I first met Adrian, everyone told me I was lucky.
He was protective, responsible, and always worried about me. He walked me home, checked if I arrived safely, and remembered every small thing I said. When he asked me to move in with him, I thought it was the beginning of a beautiful life.
"You're safe with me," he whispered.
And I believed him.
At first, his rules felt like love.
"Don't go out too late."
"Tell me where you are."
"Be careful who you talk to."
I smiled because I thought, He just cares about me.
But slowly, the rules became heavier.
He didn't like my clothes anymore. He didn't like my friends. He questioned every message on my phone. Every decision I made needed his approval.
The person who once made me feel protected started making me feel trapped.
"You don't understand," he would say. "I'm doing this because I love you."
But love shouldn't feel like fear.
I started missing the girl I used to be — the girl who laughed loudly, made her own choices, and didn't need permission to exist.
The hardest part wasn't realizing he changed.
It was realizing maybe he hadn't changed at all.
Maybe I was just seeing the parts of him I ignored because I wanted to believe I had found my safe place.
One night, standing alone in the kitchen of the home we shared, I looked around and realized something.
A home is supposed to be where your heart can rest.
Not where you learn how to stay quiet.
And for the first time in a long time, I asked myself:
"Am I loved… or am I controlled?"
