Chapter 24: Shadows of the Thames
The heavy scent of rain and old stone drifted into the master suite of their London penthouse, a historic estate overlooking the dark, swirling currents of the Thames. It was past midnight. The city below had quieted, its brilliant lights fracturing across the wet asphalt of the streets, but inside the flat, the air remained dense with the aftershocks of their boardroom coup.
Natalie stood by the tall arched windows, wrapped in a plush dark robe, watching the distant silhouette of Tower Bridge. In her hand, she held a glass of dark red wine, the liquid catching the amber glow of the fireplace.
The double doors of the adjoining study clicked open, and Sebastian walked in. He had unbuttoned his vest, his tie long discarded, and his dark hair was slightly mussed. He looked every bit the conqueror, yet his sharp jawline was set in a tight, thoughtful line.
"Alistair’s compliance team spent the last three hours signing over the cryptographic keys to the Antwerp accounts," Sebastian said, his deep baritone cutting through the quiet hum of the rain. He walked over to the mantle, leaning one hand against the dark wood as he watched her. "By morning, the entire European supply chain will be routed through your private terminal."
"You don't look celebrated, Sebastian," Natalie noted, turning her head to meet his icy blue gaze. "The London board fell exactly as we planned. What's bothering you?"
Sebastian reached into his pocket and pulled out a sleek, unfamiliar silver device—a high-frequency satellite phone. He set it down on the marble coffee table between them.
"Twenty minutes ago, a secure encrypted transmission bypassed the New York server," Sebastian said, his voice dropping into a low, lethal register. "It didn't come from a competitor. It came from an old, unlisted maritime frequency once used by my father's private shipping vessels."
Natalie froze, setting her wine glass down on the console table. She walked over to the sofa, her eyes fixed on the silver phone. "Matteo is in a federal holding cell. Who has access to those frequencies?"
"Matteo was a symptom, Natalie. Not the disease," Sebastian murmured, walking over to stand directly behind her. His powerful, commanding presence enveloped her, the warmth of his chest radiating through the silk of her robe. He leaned down, his breath brushing the shell of her ear. "The text was short. A single coordinates string pointing to a private dock along the old docklands of East London."
"A trap?"
"Undoubtedly," Sebastian whispered, his long fingers gently sliding over her shoulders, his touch a reassuring, heavy weight. "But whoever sent it knows the exact internal ledger numbers of the *Vesper Holdings* account—details that were never released to the federal prosecutors or the public."
A cold spike of adrenaline shot through Natalie’s veins. She turned around within his embrace, looking up into his striking eyes. The game hadn't ended with Arthur’s ruin or Matteo’s arrest. A ghost from the Vance family’s hidden past was pulling a new thread, right here in London.
"They think they've found a new vulnerability because we're away from our home turf," Natalie said, her dark eyes flashing with a dangerous, calculating brilliance. "They think the European transition has distracted us."
"They don't know who they are dealing with," Sebastian replied, a wicked, dark smile finally touching his lips as he looked down at her. He reached up, his thumb lightly tracing her jawline, his grip firm and fiercely possessive. "They think I brought a wife to grace the boardrooms. They don't realize I brought a partner who knows exactly how to sink a ship."
Natalie tilted her chin up, her fingers tightening against the crisp fabric of his shirt. "Then we don't send a security team. We go ourselves. Let's see who is lurking in the fog."
Sebastian stared at her for a long, heavy beat, the raw adoration in his eyes burns brighter than the fire in the hearth. He leaned down, capturing her lips in a brief, hard kiss that tasted of unspoken promises and shared danger.
"Midnight tomorrow," Sebastian murmured against her lips. "We pull back the final curtain."
