Chapter 18: A Ring Beneath the Cherry Blossoms
Spring arrived at the university, covering the campus in a sea of soft pink cherry blossoms. Their petals drifted through the air like tiny pieces of hope, reminding Ariana and Elena of the promise they had made months ago—to write their own future.
The university was preparing for its annual Spring Festival. Every club had decorated colorful stalls, music filled the campus, and students eagerly welcomed visitors from nearby colleges.
The Literature Club had organized a storytelling exhibition. Ariana's award-winning story, "A Second Chance," was displayed at the center of the hall. Students gathered around to read it, many wiping away tears by the end.
"I never imagined so many people would connect with my story," Ariana said quietly.
Elena smiled proudly.
"Because you wrote it with your heart."
Maya walked over carrying five festival tickets.
"Come on! We've been studying for weeks. Today is for making memories."
Lillian and Sophie joined them, laughing as they headed toward the festival.
The day was filled with joy. They played games, shared snacks, took photos, and even won a giant teddy bear after Maya surprisingly defeated everyone in an archery challenge.
"I told you I was good!" Maya laughed.
"You never told us!" Lillian replied, making everyone burst into laughter.
As evening approached, the campus lights slowly illuminated the pathways. Lanterns hung from every tree, making the cherry blossoms glow like stars.
Elena gently tugged Ariana's sleeve.
"Can we take a walk?"
Ariana nodded.
They quietly slipped away from their friends and followed a familiar path leading to the oldest cherry blossom tree on campus.
The gentle breeze carried hundreds of petals around them.
"It feels just like that day," Ariana whispered.
"The day we broke the curse."
Elena smiled.
"But this memory will be different."
She reached into her pocket and pulled out a small velvet box.
Ariana looked at it in surprise.
"Elena..."
Elena opened the box.
Inside was a delicate silver ring engraved with tiny cherry blossom petals.
Ariana's eyes filled with tears.
"This isn't..." she whispered.
Elena laughed nervously.
"It's not a marriage proposal."
"Not yet."
Both of them laughed.
"I just wanted to give you a promise ring," Elena continued.
"A promise that no matter what happens in college, no matter where our careers take us, no matter how difficult life becomes..."
She gently held Ariana's hand.
"...I'll always choose you."
Ariana could no longer hold back her tears.
For two lifetimes, she had dreamed of hearing those words.
Without hesitation, Elena slipped the ring onto Ariana's finger.
It fit perfectly.
Ariana looked at the sparkling ring beneath the lantern lights.
Then she reached into her own bag.
"I have something for you too."
Elena blinked in surprise.
Ariana revealed another small velvet box.
"I bought it after winning the writing competition."
Inside was a matching silver ring.
"I wanted to promise you the same thing."
Elena smiled through happy tears.
Ariana gently placed the ring on Elena's finger.
The two girls looked at each other, both smiling as cherry blossom petals floated between them.
"I love you," Ariana whispered.
Elena rested her forehead against Ariana's.
"I loved you in our last life."
"I love you in this life."
"And I'll love you in every tomorrow we create together."
Just then, applause erupted behind them.
The couple turned around in surprise.
Maya, Lillian, and Sophie stood a few steps away, each holding a phone after secretly taking pictures.
"You two are impossible to surprise!" Maya laughed.
"We've been looking everywhere," Lillian added.
Sophie smiled warmly.
"This moment was too beautiful to miss."
Everyone laughed together.
Maya handed Ariana and Elena the giant teddy bear they had won earlier.
"A gift for the happiest couple on campus."
Ariana hugged the teddy bear while Elena laughed.
The five friends spent the rest of the evening watching fireworks light up the sky.
As the colorful lights reflected in their eyes, Ariana realized something.
The cherry blossoms no longer reminded her of tragedy.
They reminded her of courage.
Of friendship.
Of forgiveness.
And of a love that had survived even death itself.
As the final firework bloomed across the night sky, Elena intertwined her fingers with Ariana's once again.
"This is only the beginning," Elena whispered.
Ariana smiled.
"Yes."
"Our future isn't written by fate anymore."
"It's written by us."
The cherry blossom petals danced through the night as the stars watched over them, blessing a love that had finally found its forever.
