Chapter 12: A United Front
The warmth of Sebastian’s hand lingered on Natalie's skin long after he released his grip. For a man who built an empire on calculated isolation, the unspoken alliance he had just formed with her felt like a seismic shift in the room's atmosphere. The clinical coldness of the study hadn't changed, but the dynamic between its occupants had.
Sebastian walked over to the floor-to-ceiling windows, looking out over the manicured grounds. "Arthur expects a standard corporate transition over the next two weeks. He thinks my analysts will be tied up auditing physical inventory and outstanding vendor contracts."
"Which gives us exactly two weeks to trace *Vesper Holdings* without triggering his suspicion," Natalie said, standing up and closing the leather binders with a decisive snap. "If he sees your corporate lawyers digging into offshore shell accounts, he’ll spook and move the funds again."
Sebastian turned around, a sharp, approving glint in his icy blue eyes. "My corporate lawyers won't be touching this. The moment a Vance Group IP address pings those accounts, an automated alert will notify Arthur's brokers. If we want to blindside him, the investigation has to look entirely disconnected from me."
Natalie caught his drift instantly. A subtle smile played on her lips. "It needs to look like a personal matter. A disgruntled, discarded daughter looking into her former family's hidden assets."
"Exactly," Sebastian murmured, walking back to the desk and leaning against its edge. He crossed his arms, his gaze tracking her movements with a new level of intensity. "You will handle the digital trail. I will provide the off-grid server access and the secure channels, but the footprint left behind must be yours. If Arthur detects anyone digging, he will see your name and assume it's a petty family grievance, not a corporate ambush."
"And while I play the vengeful daughter in the shadows, what will you be doing?" Natalie asked, stepping closer to him, refusing to let his proximity intimidate her.
"I will be doing what I do best," Sebastian said, his voice dropping to a low, lethal baritone. "I will invite Arthur to lunch. I will flatter his ego, pretend the transition is going smoothly, and drop hints that I am considering appointing him to a nominal advisory board with a hefty retention bonus. The greedier he gets, the more complacent he will become."
Natalie couldn't help but admire the sheer ruthlessness of his strategy. He didn't just want to defeat his opponents; he wanted to orchestrate their absolute downfall while they smiled and thanked him for the opportunity.
"You really are as calculating as the rumors say," she remarked, a touch of genuine amusement in her voice.
"In my world, Natalie, hesitation is a death sentence," Sebastian replied, his face inches from hers as he straightened up. The familiar, commanding scent of his cologne enveloped her once more. "But you're proving to be quite the strategist yourself. Let's see if your execution matches your intellect."
Before Natalie could respond, a soft knock rattled the heavy mahogany door. Mrs. Gable entered, her expression as impeccably rigid as ever.
"Mr. Vance, your car for the executive luncheon is waiting downstairs," the housekeeper announced, her eyes shifting briefly to Natalie, noting the close proximity between the newlyweds before dropping back to the floor. "And Mrs. Vance, a delivery has arrived for you in the grand foyer."
"A delivery?" Natalie countered, glancing at Sebastian.
"Go see what it is," Sebastian said smoothly, adjusting the cuffs of his white shirt. "We'll review the first wave of encrypted data tonight at midnight. Don't be late."
Natalie gave him a sharp nod and followed Mrs. Gable out of the study, down the winding marble staircase to the foyer. Restings on the grand central table was an massive, extravagant bouquet of blood-red roses, surrounded by several designer shopping bags from the most exclusive boutiques in the city.
Tucked into the center of the roses was a small, cream-colored envelope. Natalie pulled out the card, expecting a calculated gesture from Sebastian to maintain appearances for the staff. Instead, her blood turned to ice as she read the elegant, handwritten script:
> *To my dearest Natalie,*
> *Marriage suits you, but don't forget where you belong. A bird in a golden cage is still a bird waiting to be caught. See you very soon.*
> *— M.*
>
Natalie’s knuckles turned white as she crumpled the note in her hand. It wasn't from Melanie. The handwriting was masculine, precise, and hauntingly familiar. It was from Matteo Vance—Sebastian’s estranged, exiled older brother, and the one man capable of burning the Vance empire to the ground.
She looked up at the towering stone walls of the mansion, the crumpled paper burning a hole in her palm. The war wasn't just outside the gates anymore. It was already inside.
