Chapter 10: Fractured Foundations
The ride back to the Vance estate was silent, but it was no longer the tense, suffocating silence of strangers. It was the heavy, charged quiet of two opponents who had finally seen each other's opening moves. Sebastian stared out his window at the blurring city lights, his mind seemingly miles away in some corporate battlefield, while Natalie looked down at her hands, the weight of the evening pressing into her chest.
When the luxury car finally pulled up to the grand stone fortress, the rain had slowed to a miserable drizzle. Sebastian got out first, but to Natalie’s surprise, he didn't immediately stride ahead. He paused, waiting for her at the base of the sweeping staircase, offering his arm just as he had at the gala.
"Appearances don't stop at the front door, Natalie," he said smoothly, noticing her hesitant glance. "The staff talks. Security watches."
"Of course," she murmured, slipping her hand over his forearm. "Heaven forbid the machinery of your perfect life shows a speck of dust."
They walked up to the master suite together, the grand doors closing them off from the rest of the world once more. The fire had been stoked in their absence, casting long, dancing shadows across the charcoal linens of the massive bed.
Natalie immediately walked to the vanity, her hands reaching up to unpin the intricate updo the stylists had labored over. As the dark waves tumbled around her shoulders, she caught Sebastian’s reflection in the glass. He had discarded his tuxedo jacket and was leaning against the stone fireplace, watching her with an intensity that made the skin on her neck prickle.
"You're quiet," he noted, his deep voice cutting through the crackle of the hearth. "Are you regretting what you said to Victoria?"
"Never," Natalie said sharply, turning around to face him. "They earned every bit of it. I'm just realizing how quickly the strings of your world attach themselves to me. You said the press would run stories tomorrow. You said the Lopez stock would plummet. You're using me to destroy them."
"They destroyed themselves when they tried to break a contract with me," Sebastian replied coldly, taking a step toward her. "I am merely letting gravity do its work. If you feel sympathy for them—"
"I don't," she interrupted, her voice steady and absolute. "But I won't be your weapon of choice without knowing what I get out of the carnage."
Sebastian stopped a foot away from her, his towering frame casting her into shadow. He looked down at her, a low, dangerous rumble in his chest that sounded almost like amusement. "You already got what you wanted, Natalie. Your family’s debt is wiped clean. You have a roof over your head that costs more than their entire business, and you have a name that makes the most powerful men in this city bow their heads."
"A name I didn't ask for," she shot back, stepping closer until her chest almost brushed his crisp white shirt. "A name that comes with a target on my back. If I'm going to play the ruthless Mrs. Vance, I want a seat at the table. I want to know your next move before you make it."
Sebastian’s eyes narrowed, the icy blue darkening with a mixture of surprise and calculation. He reached out, his thumb brushing against the pulse point on her neck, feeling the rapid, defiant beat of her heart.
"You want power," he whispered, his face dropping inches from hers.
"I want survival," Natalie corrected, refusing to back down from the overwhelming heat of his proximity. "And in this house, power is the only currency that buys it."
Sebastian stared at her for a long, agonizing moment, his grip on her neck tightening just enough to command her absolute attention. For the first time, he didn't see an asset or a pawn. He saw someone who might actually be capable of standing beside him without being crushed by his weight.
Slowly, he let his hand drop. "Tomorrow at nine AM, my legal team will deliver the restructuring files for the Lopez acquisition to my study. If you want a seat at the table, Natalie... be there to read them."
He turned and walked toward his side of the bed, leaving her standing by the vanity, her breath catching in her throat. The foundations of their arrangement were fracturing, shifting into something far more dangerous than a corporate marriage. She had demanded a place in his world—and Sebastian had just dared her to take it.
