CHAPTER 1(The First Day)
The morning sun filtered through the classroom windows, casting long shadows across the polished desks. It was the first day of senior high school, and the air carried that familiar mix of nerves and excitement. Students trickled in, choosing seats freely, clustering near friends or familiar faces.
Zacharie Gray slipped into the second row, second seat, beside her new seatmate Clara Whitlock. Clara greeted her with a warm smile, but Zacharie’s attention was already drifting forward.
In the first row, third seat, sat Kai Shay Solace. She was surrounded by her friends, Elena Vance and Sloane Montgomery, who leaned in close, whispering and giggling as they observed the room. Kai’s laughter rang out, bold and cheerful, filling the quiet space with a kind of brightness that made her impossible to ignore.
Zacharie’s eyes lingered on her. So she is the one that I’ve stalked, she thought, her lips twitching into a faint smile. The pretty and aesthetic one. She’s really pretty… and kinda has a cute personality. She looks nice to be friends with.
Zacharie was naturally observant, the type to sit back and take in the details before stepping forward. She was shy at first, quiet in the background, but she carried a sharp wit and a joker’s heart. When the time came to speak, her voice could rise strong and clear, surprising those who mistook her silence for timidity.
The teacher eventually called for introductions. One by one, students stood, voices soft, sharing their names and a few details. The atmosphere remained calm, each person speaking mostly to their own circle.
When Kai stood, her confidence was undeniable. “I’m Kai Shay Solace,” she said with a grin, her voice carrying easily across the room. “I love meeting new people, so don’t be shy to talk to me.” Elena and Sloane giggled behind her, clearly proud of their friend’s boldness.
Zacharie felt her chest tighten, realizing she was holding her breath. Clara nudged her lightly, whispering, “She’s really something, huh?” Zacharie only nodded, her eyes still fixed on Kai.
When it was Zacharie’s turn, she rose slowly. At first, her voice was quiet, hesitant. But as she spoke, it grew louder, steadier, carrying a surprising strength. “I’m Zacharie Gray,” she said, her tone clear enough to be heard by everyone. “I like observing people… and cracking jokes when the time feels right.” A few chuckles rippled through the room, and Zacharie sat back down, her cheeks warm but her heart steady.
The rest of the day passed in a blur of introductions, light chatter, and tentative friendships forming. Kai remained the center of her circle, Elena and Sloane whispering and laughing with her, occasionally glancing back toward Zacharie with curious eyes. Clara kept Zacharie company, filling the quiet moments with small talk, but Zacharie’s thoughts kept circling back to Kai.
As the final bell rang, students gathered their things, voices rising with the relief of the day’s end. Kai’s laughter echoed once more, bright and bold, and Zacharie found herself smiling without meaning to.
Walking out of the classroom, Zacharie thought to herself: This year is going to be different. I can feel it.
