Chapter 8: The Diary of Forgotten Promises
The old diary rested in Ariana's trembling hands.
The rooftop had grown silent after the mysterious girl's shocking revelation. The setting sun painted the sky in shades of orange and pink, but none of them noticed its beauty.
Elena stared at the worn leather cover.
"Where did you get this?" she asked.
The mysterious girl lowered her eyes.
"It belonged to you... in your previous life."
Ariana slowly opened the diary. The pages had yellowed with age, and elegant handwriting filled every corner. Her heart pounded as she began reading aloud.
> 'If fate is kind, perhaps we will meet again in another life. Even if the world forgets us, my heart never will.'
Elena's eyes widened.
"That handwriting..." she whispered. "It's mine."
The next page contained pressed cherry blossom petals.
A sudden headache struck Ariana.
Images flashed before her eyes.
A quiet park covered in pink petals.
Elena laughing as she placed a flower behind Ariana's ear.
A promise made beneath a cherry blossom tree.
"No matter what happens," Elena had said, "I'll find you again."
Ariana clutched her head.
"I remember it," she gasped.
Elena quickly held her shoulders.
"Ariana!"
Tears slipped down Ariana's cheeks.
"We were together before. We loved each other."
The mysterious girl stepped forward.
"And because of that love, everything ended in tragedy."
Silence fell between them.
"What do you mean?" Elena asked.
The girl hesitated before answering.
"In your previous life, society didn't accept your relationship. People judged you. Families turned against you."
Her voice trembled.
"You both tried to fight for your happiness... but destiny was cruel."
Ariana tightened her grip on the diary.
"What happened to us?"
The girl looked away.
"You died protecting each other."
Elena covered her mouth in shock.
The weight of the truth settled heavily upon them.
Ariana looked at Elena.
"Do you regret meeting me again?"
Without hesitation, Elena shook her head.
"Never."
"But what if history repeats itself?" Ariana whispered.
Elena took Ariana's hand and intertwined their fingers.
"Then we'll change our ending."
The determination in Elena's voice brought warmth to Ariana's frightened heart.
"We're not the same people we were before," Elena continued. "This is our new life. Our choices matter."
The mysterious girl smiled sadly.
"Perhaps that's why fate brought you together again."
A small folded note slipped from the diary.
Ariana carefully unfolded it.
Inside, only one sentence was written:
> 'Beware of the one who hides behind a smile.'
The three girls stared at the warning.
"What does that mean?" Ariana asked.
The mysterious girl frowned.
"I don't know."
Elena glanced toward the school building below.
Students were leaving after club activities.
Everyone looked normal.
But someone among them carried a dangerous secret.
Someone connected to their forgotten past.
Ariana closed the diary and looked at Elena.
"No matter who it is, we'll face it together."
Elena smiled and squeezed her hand.
"Together."
As the first stars appeared in the evening sky, neither of them noticed a figure watching from the shadows near the school gate.
The stranger smiled.
"You remembered sooner than expected," they whispered.
"But this time... I won't let fate choose your ending."
