Chapter 3: Into the Lion's Den
The luxury car glided through the iron gates of the Vance estate, its tires crunching softly against the wet gravel. Natalie looked out the window, watching the imposing stone facade of the mansion loom closer. It looked less like a home and more like a beautifully constructed fortress—cold, grand, and entirely unforgiving.
When the car came to a halt, the chauffeur quickly stepped out to open her door, holding a massive black umbrella over her head. "This way, Miss Lopez," he said, his voice devoid of any real warmth.
Natalie stepped out, keeping her chin high despite the chill that seeped through her clothes. She refused to look like a victim, even if she had just been bartered away by the people she thought were her family. As she walked through the towering double doors of the mansion, the warmth of the grand foyer did nothing to thaw the ice wrapping around her heart.
The interior was a masterclass in minimalist luxury. Marble floors reflected the glow of a massive crystal chandelier, and a sweeping staircase dominated the center of the room. Standing at the base of that staircase was an older woman in a sharp grey suit, her hair pulled back into a flawless, tight bun.
"You must be Natalie," the woman said, her eyes scanning Natalie with clinical precision. "I am Mrs. Gable, the head housekeeper. Mr. Vance is waiting for you in his study. Follow me."
Natalie didn't say a word. She simply nodded and followed Mrs. Gable up the stairs and down a long, dimly lit corridor. Every step felt like a march toward a sentencing. Melanie's parting words echoed in her mind: *Sebastian Vance is a monster.* If the rumors about the ruthless CEO were even half true, Melanie hadn't been exaggerating. He was a man who destroyed empires for breakfast and broke people for amusement.
Mrs. Gable stopped in front of a heavy mahogany door. She knocked once, and a deep, resonant voice from inside commanded, "Enter."
The housekeeper opened the door, gesturing for Natalie to go in, and then promptly closed it behind her.
The study was vast, lined with floor-to-ceiling bookshelves and smelling of leather, expensive whiskey, and rain. At the far end of the room, behind a massive desk, sat Sebastian Vance.
He didn't look up immediately. He was signing a stack of documents, the scratching of his fountain pen the only sound in the room. He wore a crisp white shirt with the sleeves rolled up to his forearms, revealing strong, tan wrists. His dark hair was perfectly styled, and even in the dim lighting of the study, his sharp jawline and striking features were undeniable. He was devastatingly handsome, but it was a dangerous, lethal kind of beauty.
Finally, he set the pen down and raised his eyes. They were a piercing, icy blue, locking onto Natalie with an intensity that made her breath catch in her throat.
"Sit," Sebastian ordered, gesturing to the leather chair across from his desk.
Natalie didn't move. She stood her ground, crossing her arms. "I prefer to stand."
A ghost of a smirk touched Sebastian’s lips, though his eyes remained entirely cold. He leaned back in his chair, weaving his fingers together. "Suit yourself. I see the Lopez family sent the wrong daughter. You aren't Melanie."
"Melanie couldn't make it," Natalie replied, her voice steady despite the adrenaline coursing through her veins. "So you get me."
"And who exactly are you to them?" Sebastian asked, his tone dripping with indifference. "The sacrificial lamb?"
"I am Natalie. And it doesn't matter who I am to them," she said firmly, taking a step closer to the desk. "The deal was for a daughter of the Lopez family to fulfill the contract to save their business. I am here. The debt is satisfied."
Sebastian stood up, and Natalie realized just how imposing he truly was. He towered over her, walking around the desk until he was standing just a few feet away. The scent of his expensive cologne enveloped her, commanding and suffocating all at once.
"The debt is satisfied when *I* say it is," Sebastian whispered, his voice dangerously low as he looked down at her. "Your family thought they could play a game of bait-and-switch with me. They think you are worthless to them, a disposable piece on their chessboard."
He reached out, his cold fingers gently gripping her chin, forcing her to look directly into his icy gaze.
"But you are in my house now, Natalie. And under my roof, you will learn exactly what it means to belong to a monster."
