I woke up to the sirens wailing. It's 4:20 a.m. Sunrise has been one hour away but I could hear the commotion down on the street. People were shouting and I could hear metal clanking on the road.
What is happening? Maybe there is an accident and someone is getting hurt. The picture of blood in my head made me want to throw up.
I hastily put my slippers on and stride towards the window. I squinted as I tried to see better what exactly is happening down the murky street. I could see people yelling for help as they ran. Policemen heavily armed banged on every door and charged into every house, every building; barking evacuation.
Evacuation? Is this a sick joke? Are the policemen having nothing better to do than yelling at innocent citizens to tell them to leave their houses? Also, early this morning? Maybe they were drunk.
A loud bang on my door has taken me out of the reverie. I tried to ignore the furious banging on the door as the officer barked from the other side of the door.
'Sir, for your safety, evacuation has been needed. Run to the nearest government building for your safety.', he shouted.
I did not reply nor did I try to. I stood motionless as I listened to him shouting from the outside.
I might as well invite him for tea, I thought to myself amusingly. He needed that, probably.
'Sir? Can you hear me?'
Still, I did not reply.
'I repeated. Evacuation. Run for your safety. ', he said tersely.
My lack of response seemed to work as he started to shuffle his boots and left.
I sighed with relief as I heard the receding footsteps of the officer. I tried to go back to sleep but from my peripheral vision, I could see rapid flashy lights. I am not sure what it is. Maybe just a random flash of light used by the policemen. Damn the policemen. I have woken up for nothing.
Three minutes had passed and nothing else had been happening. There was still confusion and upheaval outside but nothing much. Try as I might, sleep is not coming and I cursed a few times as I changed my sleeping position.
I would need lots of caffeine and tea in the morning.
Suddenly, there was a ringing sound inside my head. First, it was subtle but it began to intensify as a minute passed by. My heart skips a beat and my pulse quickens. I held my ears fiercely, trying to block out the sound but it did no good. My whole body thrummed with vibrations as if I was being shocked by a machine.
Something is happening. I don't know what it is and that makes me fear it more. I curled up on my bed wishing it was all just a dream and that nothing was happening and I was sleeping safe and sound.
I could not hear people screaming anymore as the ringing sound had completely obscured it. I feared that my head might explode with that so much intensity. I could feel a warm liquid dripping down my mouth. I hastily rubbed with my other arm and observed it under the dim light coming from the kitchen.
Oh my God! Its blood. What exactly is happening? Am I hallucinating? I don't think this has ever happened to me before. I should probably book an appointment at the hospital first thing once the sunrise.
I put my head up and pressed my nose together with my fingers and headed to the bathroom. I cleansed my nose carefully with the water and tried heading back to the bed but a loud crashing sound stopped me from my track.
Losing my patience I finally turned the doorknob and went outside. What I saw sent a chill down my spine, and the hairs at the back of my neck sprang up. Every house on my block was on fire, windows crashing and dead bodies lying around the road. My house was one of the few that has not been wrecked. These were nothing compared to the thing I saw next. A huge disc-shaped metal with tentacles and claws stood on the street and from that came a creature I had never seen off. Their faces were grotesque, moss green and heavily wrinkled. They were not small or big-headed as they were being portrayed. They were huge and clad with leather-like suits and weapons that I have never seen.
Suddenly, realisation dawned on me. They were extraterrestrials and they were invading us or they were trying to wipe us from the earth. Whatever purpose they were coming for we are not going to win the battle. We are going to lose but I made a promise to myself that whatever may have happened I am not going to die.
I walked out on the dark, gloomy and havoc streets with a chance of survival on my head…..
