The sun was just rising above the tall buildings of Seoul, painting the sky in soft shades of orange and pink.
In the Kim mansion, Namjoon sat at his desk, pretending to read the heavy economics book open in front of him.
His pen rested in his hand, but his mind was far away.
It was not on the words of business theories. It was, as always, on the boy next door.
They had been together for as long as Namjoon could remember.
Their fathers were not just neighbours but business partners too. Namjoon's father was the legal advisor and personal lawyer of Jeons...
Their families lived like one extended household.
If the Kims held a festival, the Jeons were present. If the Jeons had a wedding, the Kims became hosts too.
Children of both houses ran freely through each other’s gates without asking permission.
Namjoon often thought back to the first time he saw Jungkook.
He had been only four years old, holding his mother’s hand, when the Jeons moved in next door.
A little boy of his same age, with round eyes and cheeks like soft bread, hid behind his mother’s dress.
He had looked at Namjoon like a frightened rabbit.
Namjoon remembered bending down, offering him a candy from his pocket.
Slowly, the boy had smiled, shy but curious.
By the end of that day, they were chasing each other around the garden, their mothers laughing as they tried to keep up.
From then on, they had been inseparable.

There were so many memories.
Summer spent climbing the mango tree in the Jeon garden. Monsoons when they splashed in puddles until their mothers dragged them in, scolding.
Winters with cricket matches in the colony park, fighting for who would bat first.
Namjoon remembered one particular day when they were about eight years old.

Don’t cheat, Namjoon!
Little Jungkook had shouted, his small face red with anger.
Young Kook
You are not out! You are lying!
Namjoon had folded his arms.
Young Namjoon
I touched the stump. You are out. Don’t argue.
Jungkook’s eyes filled with tears.
Young Kook
You always do this! You don’t want me to win.
Namjoon had panicked then. He hated when Jungkook cried.
He quickly dropped the bat and ran to him.
Young Namjoon
Fine, fine! You bat again. I don’t care. But don’t cry.
Jungkook sniffled, wiping his nose on his sleeve.
Young Namjoon
Yes. You can bat the whole day if you want.
And just like that, Jungkook’s tears had turned into a wide smile.
He had hugged Namjoon suddenly, surprising him.
That was the first time Namjoon realised that he would do anything....literally anything to see Jungkook smile.
Years passed, but their bond only grew stronger.
By the time they reached college, they were still as close as ever.
They enrolled in the same course, sat in the same classroom, still they had few different subjects....and still shared lunches like they had in school.
Namjoon had grown tall and broad-shouldered, his calm and intelligent aura making him popular with both students and teachers.
Jungkook, younger by few months, was handsome in his own boyish way
Bright eyes, easy laughter, and energy that filled every room he entered.
He was liked by everyone, though he didn’t even notice.
To Jungkook, Namjoon was still his best friend, his comfort zone, the one person who understood him without words.
But to Namjoon, things had changed quietly.
Somewhere between those cricket matches and late-night study sessions, friendship had turned into something deeper.
