so I be doing 1 chapter today cause I still need to review for our prelim exam tommorow>_<

It was a quiet summer evening.
Cicadas chirped in the trees outside, and the last golden light of the day slipped through the curtains of the Wu family living room. Shen Qi sat on the edge of the couch, hands folded tightly in his lap. He was seventeen. His schoolbag lay forgotten on the floor, shoes still half on.
Across from him, Gu yuchen sat with with his arms crossed. Calm. Silent. Unreadable.
Both their parents were seated nearby, sipping tea with forced smiles. Something in the air felt too serious for a casual visit

"Shen Qi," his papa said gently

"do you remember the promise we made with the Gu family when you were born?"

"Promise?" I blinked at him
Gu yuchen eyes didn't move. He was looking at the floor. His jaw clenched slightly.
Their parents exchanged glances. Then Mrs. Gu spoke, voice steady.
Gu lian( Ml mom)
"We agreed... if one of us had a boy and the other had a girl, they'd be married one day."

"But you both had boys," I said, confused.
Gu lian( Ml mom)
"We kept trying," said softly
shen ying (Mc mom)
"But in the end... we only had you two."
There was a pause. Then Mrs. Gu leaned forward with a smile that didn't quite reach her eyes.
Gu lian( Ml mom)
"So... we decided. Why break the promise just because you're both boys?"l
Shen Qi stared. His heart thudded in his chest, unsure whether it was fear or something else.
Gu yuchen finally looked up

Shen Qi opened his mouth to speak, but no sound came out. His brain was still catching up.

"You're engaged," as if that explained everything.

"You'll marry when you're older."

"I... I don't mind." I tremble saying it while peeking at yuchen reaction

I looked at him and said "Do you?‘’

"You don't have to tell anyone"His voice calm but firm
shen Qi [MC]
"But-"before I could said it he cut my words
Gu yuchen (Ml)
"Not your friends. Not at school. Not anyone."

*After saying it He turned away*
Shen Qi sat frozen, words caught in his throat. For a moment, he thought he saw something flicker in Gu yuchen eyes. A tremble, maybe. A hesitation. But it was gone as quickly as it came.
That night, Shen Qi went to bed with one thought echoing in his head

Engaged... to Gu Yuchen?
And Gu yuchen?
He lay awake in the dark, staring at the ceiling, replaying one word over and over in his chest.
He didn't say it out loud.

The campus buzzed with noise and energy. Students carried suitcases, parents hovered with cameras, and clubs handed out flyers like confetti.
Shen Qi stood at the main gate, clutching a wrinkled paper with his dorm number. His heart raced.

[He was finally here]

[A whole year behind, thanks to repeating classes, but still... university.]
His eyes scanned the crowd. He wasn't looking for his dorm. He was looking for him.
Tall, broad-shouldered, black T-shirt clinging to his back, basketball tucked under one arm. A group of girls followed behind him, laughing, handing him snacks and energy drinks like offerings to a god.

Shen Qi heart thumped. He waved. "Yuchen"
Gu yuchen stopped walking. His eyes landed on him. For a moment, Shen Qi thought he saw a flicker of surprise... or maybe warmth?

[He didn't wave back]

*Shen Qi smile wilted.*

*But he ran after him anyway,*

*grabbing his bag tighter.*

Gu yuchen stopped and turned slightly. His voice was quiet, sharp

Behind them, a few girls giggled.
Gu yuchen glanced over his shoulder at the attention and lowered his voice even more.

*He looked down at his shoes, heat rising behind his eyes.*

Gu yuchen didn't say anything else. He just walked off
Shen Qi stood in the middle of the path, surrounded by strangers, trying to convince himself he didn't care
That evening, when Shen Qi opened the door to their shared apartment, Gu yuchen was already there barefoot, hair wet from a shower, scrolling through his phone like nothing happened.
They didn't speak for a moment

Then Gu yuchen glanced up. "You unpacked?"

Shen Qi bit his lip. "Why did you ignore me?"

*Gu yuchen looked at him for a long time. Then:*

But that night, when Shen Qi climbed into bed with his back turned, he heard a soft sound in the dark.
A whisper. Barely above silence

He turned. "What?"
