They said working for him was like walking into a cage with a predator. I told myself they were exaggerating, but the second I stepped into his office, I knew they weren’t.

The room was too cold, too still, as if even the air held its breath for him. He sat behind his desk, head bent over a file, ignoring me. That silence felt intentional—like he wanted me to squirm.

Finally, his gaze lifted. Dark. Sharp. Unrelenting.

“New assistant?” His voice was low, smooth, the kind that lingered after it was gone.

“Yes, sir,” I managed, gripping my notebook tighter.

He leaned back, studying me like I was already disappointing him. “You won’t last.”

Heat rushed to my cheeks. “I plan to.”

My heart thudded, too fast. I looked down at my notes, pretending to write, but his voice slid over me again.

His gaze pinned me in place. “Because once you start, you won’t want to stop.”

Something inside me shifted. I should have looked away, should have walked out. Instead, I stood frozen, heart racing, already caught in whatever game this was.
