Priya was standing in the kitchen, her hands deep in soapy water, scrubbing the dishes. Her back ached, and the strong smell of spices from the lunch she had cooked made her feel sick again. She pressed a hand to her stomach, trying to breathe through the nausea.
Four months pregnant. Four months of trying to keep herself and her baby healthy. Four months of doing all the house chores without a word of complaint. But today… her body felt heavier than usual.
Suddenly, a wave of sickness hit her. She quickly put the plate down and rushed to the sink. Her body shook as she vomited, holding onto the counter for support. Before she could even rinse her mouth, a sharp, cold voice came from behind.
Myra malhotra/fl
Myra malhotra/fl's grandmother
“Stop being so dramatic, Priya.” (folding her arms.) “Pregnancy isn’t a disease. We all worked during our time. Don’t act like a queen here.”
Priya froze, her eyes filling with tears. She had heard such words so many times… but today, they cut deeper.
At that moment, footsteps echoed in the hall. Vijay appeared, his eyes instantly moving to his wife, pale and shivering by the sink. He glanced at his mother, his expression turning hard.
Vijay Malhotra/fl
Vijay Malhotra/fl's father
“Ma, enough.” (he said, his voice sharp.) “She is not being dramatic. She’s carrying my child, and she’s been doing everything without complaining. But you—” (his jaw clenched)—“you’ve done nothing but bully her.”
Myra malhotra/fl

“Vijay, I didn’t mean—"
Vijay Malhotra/fl

“I said enough.” (His voice was final, the kind that left no space for argument. He turned to Priya, his anger melting into concern.) “Pack the bags, Priya. We’re leaving this house.”
Priya Malhotra/fl
Priya Malhotra/fl's mother
(Eyes widened.) “But—”
Vijay Malhotra/fl
Vijay Malhotra/fl's father
“No buts.” (He reached for her hand, squeezing it gently.) “I should have done this long ago.”
Myra malhotra/fl

(Stepped forward, panic in her eyes.) “Vijay, I didn’t mean to hurt her—”
Vijay Malhotra/fl
Vijay Malhotra/fl's father
(Didn’t even look back.) “I said what I said.”
Priya’s heart raced as she went to their room, her hands shaking while she packed. She had dreamed of escaping this house so many times… but never thought the day would actually come. Minutes later, they stepped out together. For the first time in years, Priya felt a flicker of hope—hope for a life where she and her baby could breathe freely. And behind them, Myra stood silently at the doorway, watching them leave… realising she might have just lost her son forever.

Days passed. Life had changed completely for Vijay and Priya. They now lived in a small rented apartment, far away from the constant tension of his family’s house. It wasn’t big, but it was peaceful. No taunts. No cold stares. Just the two of them… and the baby growing inside Priya. But pregnancy wasn’t easy on her.
Every morning, Priya woke up with nausea, running to the washroom before she could even open her eyes properly. Some days it was mild, other days it drained her completely, leaving her weak and tired. Vijay, busy with work, still tried to be there for her as much as possible. But on days when he couldn’t, her younger sister, Siya, became her biggest support. Siya would show up at their place early in the morning, armed with fresh fruits, homemade soups, and her usual chatter.

“Come on, didi.” (placing a pillow behind Priya’s back.) “You have to eat something. Baby needs energy.”

(Shook her head weakly.) “I feel like I’ll throw up again…”
Siya sharma

“Then throw up.” (said casually, spooning a little soup for her.) “But you’re still eating. I’m not letting my niece or nephew starve just because you don’t feel like eating.”
Priya chuckled softly at her sister’s bossy tone. Siya stayed by her side all day—massaging her feet, helping with laundry, and distracting her with silly stories. Sometimes, she would even scold Vijay over the phone if she thought he wasn’t taking enough care of Priya.
In the quiet moments, when Siya had gone home and Vijay was yet to return, Priya would rest her hand on her small bump. She felt a strange mix of exhaustion and joy—life was tiring, but in her heart, she knew it was worth it.

after the delivery.
Priya lay on the hospital bed, breathing heavily, still recovering from the pain. The nurse walked in with a warm smile. Nurse: “Congratulations, Mrs. Malhotra… it’s a baby girl.” Priya’s heart skipped a beat. A baby girl. Her mind immediately went to Vijay’s parents. They had always wanted a grandson…

[What if Vijay… doesn’t feel happy? What if… he looks at her differently?]
Her thoughts were interrupted by the door opening. Vijay walked in, his face glowing with joy. In his arms, wrapped in a soft pink blanket, was their newborn. He sat down beside her, his eyes shimmering with tears.

“Look, Priya… it’s a baby girl… and she’s so pretty… so beautiful.”
Vijay Malhotra/fl

“I’ll give her the name Aahana… my sunshine.”
Priya’s eyes welled up. All her fears melted away as she looked at him—this man who wasn’t just holding their daughter, but holding her like she was the most precious thing in the world.
Aahana was indeed beautiful—fair skin that seemed to glow, black almond-shaped eyes framed by impossibly long lashes, tiny pink lips, and a head full of soft, dark black hair. And she was healthy, breathing steadily, her small fingers curling around Vijay’s thumb. Priya smiled weakly, her heart full.
Still sitting beside Priya, Vijay pulled out his phone. He wanted to let his family know about the arrival.
He dialed his father’s number.

“Dad… it’s a baby girl.”
Ranbir Malhotra/fl

“That’s none of our business.”
Priya’s heart sank. She lowered her gaze, feeling the sting of those words. Vijay’s jaw tightened. His hand automatically went to Aahana’s tiny head, as if shielding her from the cruelty.
Vijay Malhotra/fl
Vijay Malhotra/fl's father
“You know what? You’re right… from today onwards, nothing about us will be your business.”
Without waiting for a reply, he cut the call. Priya looked at him, worried.

"Vijay..."
Vijay Malhotra/fl

"shhh.. I don’t care who approves or not. She’s my daughter, and she’s perfect.”
He kissed Priya’s forehead, then Aahana’s tiny hand. Outside, the world could be harsh… but inside this room, their little family was untouchable.

A year passed in the blink of an eye. Aahana had grown into a chubby little angel with the same black almond eyes and long lashes as before… only now, they sparkled brighter. It was her first birthday. The house was decorated with balloons, ribbons, and the smell of freshly baked cake. Priya had been planning for weeks, wanting everything to be perfect.
She looked at Vijay while putting the finishing touches on the cake.

“Vijay… please, just this once, invite your family. It’s her first birthday… maybe they’ll come.”
Vijay sighed but nodded for her sake. He made the calls. The day went on… the guests arrived, laughter filled the room, kids played. But there was no sign of his parents, no call, no message. Priya kept glancing at the door, holding on to a small hope. Vijay noticed and wrapped his arm around her.

“Priya… they didn’t come to the hospital when she was born. Why would they come now?”
Her eyes lowered.

“Because she’s their granddaughter…”
Vijay Malhotra/fl

“They chose to stay away. And that’s fine… we don’t need them. Look around—Aahana has so many people here who love her.”
Just then, Aahana giggled, smashing cake on her own face, and everyone laughed. Vijay smiled and kissed her little forehead.

“Happy Birthday, princess… you’re all the family I need.”
And the celebration went on, warm and full of love—despite the empty chairs meant for those who never came.

"I can't, my daughter is studying in the city's best school."
Aahana ran around the living room, laughing as she played with her toys. Priya glanced nervously at Vijay as his jaw tightened.

But she’s just a girl! Why waste so much on her education? One day she’ll get married, and you won’t get anything in return!
Vijay’s eyes flashed with anger. He stepped forward, his voice low but cutting.
Vijay Malhotra/fl

(Angrily) Stop it! Stop saying such things about my daughter! She’s not “just a girl!” She is my child, and I will give her everything she deserves, whether you understand it or not!

Vijay… calm down.
Vijay Malhotra/fl
Vijay Malhotra/fl's father
(Raising his voice now) No, I won’t calm down! I’ve stayed silent for years while you judged me, my wife, and now my daughter. Aahana will study, she will grow, she will be independent, and no one—not you, not anyone—will belittle her for being a girl!
Vijay Malhotra/fl
Vijay Malhotra/fl's father
I don’t want anything from her. I don’t need favors—I just want her to have a future, and if you can’t respect that, then maybe it’s better if you leave!
Aahana stopped playing and looked up at her father, sensing his anger. She quietly ran to Priya, hiding behind her.

(Calming him) Vijay… let it go.

(Softly, almost pleading) Vijay… I’m sorry for what happened that day. Do whatever you want…
Myra malhotra/fl

(Sweetly, but slyly) You know we don’t have enough money to get Soham married properly…
Vijay’s eyes softened. He had always been protective of his brother, and now guilt tugged at him.

Vijay Malhotra/fl's father
(Calmly) Don’t worry. I’ll handle it.
They began listing all the extravagant things they wanted for the wedding—decorations, a massive venue, designer outfits, and more. Slowly, almost without realizing it, Vijay started agreeing, signing checks, approving payments…
Priya Malhotra/fl

Vijay! Stop! Don’t spend so much! We need to save this money… for Aahana!

(Voice rising, desperate) Have you lost your mind? They’re clearly manipulating you! Don’t give in to them!
Vijay Malhotra/fl

(Angrily) Don’t question me, Priya!
Before Priya could react further, Vijay slapped her across the face. The room fell silent. Aahana’s soft gasp echoed from the stairs..
Vijay Malhotra/fl

(Furious, voice shaking) I am trying to do what’s right for my family! And if you can’t see that… then maybe you shouldn’t interfere!
Priya’s eyes filled with tears—not just from the slap, but from the pain of seeing her husband so easily manipulated.

Vijay looked down at his daughter, his anger and guilt crashing down on him. For the first time, he realized the damage his blind trust in his family was causing.

I… I didn’t mean…
But Priya turned away, her voice trembling with hurt.

Days passed, and the house was filled with activity. Vijay spent his time helping everyone around him—his parents, even distant relatives who popped in for favors. Weddings, loans, gifts… nothing was too big or too small for him to spend on. Priya watched helplessly from the sidelines, her frustration mounting.
Priya Malhotra/fl
Priya Malhotra/fl's mother
(Pleading) Vijay… please, save some money for Aahana! She’ll need it for her wedding, for her future… don’t spend everything on everyone else!
Vijay Malhotra/fl
Vijay Malhotra/fl's father
(Smiling, brushing off her concerns) Priya… don’t worry. I have a lot of money. I can always earn more for our daughter. She will have everything she needs, and more.
Priya Malhotra/fl

(Shaking her head, exasperated) It’s not about how much money you can earn! It’s about thinking carefully and making sure we don’t waste it!
Vijay Malhotra/fl
Vijay Malhotra/fl's father
(Firmly, almost stubbornly) Priya, listen to me. Aahana’s future isn’t just about saving money—it’s about giving her the best of everything. And I won’t let anyone tell me what’s enough or not enough for my daughter.
Priya’s heart sank, realizing that Vijay’s determination had turned into stubbornness. Aahana, meanwhile, played quietly, blissfully unaware of the tension around her, though sometimes she peeked at her parents with curious eyes.

Priya Malhotra/fl's mother
You’re not thinking about her… you’re just trying to please everyone else.
