Speaking.
Seo Yujin stood in front of the song family's gate, her school bag perfectly in place, one hand tapping impatiently against her thigh.
Seo Yujin
Haneul, we're going to be late. Again. *glance at her watch for the third time.*
Suddenly the front door brust open with a girl coming out of it in a hurry. A bread stuffed in her mouth, trying to speak while still munching on it.
Song Haneul
Mmm–! Im run ! Lelis goo !
{ I'm done! Let's go! }
She stumbled out, still half-tying her shoelaces, crumbs falling from her lips.
Seo Yujin
You're unbelievable.
Just as they were about to walk off, a voice boomed from behind.
Lee [Haneul’s mom]
Song Haneul!
They froze. Yujin already knew what was coming.
Mrs. Song marched over, holding Haneul’s school bag like a weapon. Without warning, she grabbed her daughter by the ear and twisted.
Song Haneul
Ow, ow, ow–Mom!
Lee [Haneul’s mom]
Going to school without your bag? what do you think you’re going to study with, air?!
Seo Yujin
*covers her mouth, trying not to laugh.*
Song Haneul
It's the first day of the semester, I thought we’d just... you know... ease into it—Ow!
Mrs. Song shoved the bag into her arms.
Lee [Haneul’s mom]
Go! Before I come with you and drag you to your classroom myself.
Haneul grumbled but grabbed Yujin’s wrist, dragging her down the street.
By the time they reached school, the front gate was already shut tight.
Seo Yujin
*Hands on hips* See? This is why we can’t walk slow.
Song Haneul
*grinning* Relax we've done this before.
Without waiting, she pulled Yujin toward the back of the school building.
They reached the familiar brick wall, slightly scuffed from years of "shortcuts." Haneul climbed first, swinging herself over with practiced ease, then leaned back down.
Song Haneul
Come on. I'll help.
Yujin sighed, but she took Haneul’s hand anyway. Her foot slipped for a movement, but Haneul caught her steady.
Seo Yujin
You could at least pretend this isn’t illegal.
Song Haneul
It's tradition.
They crept through the back corridor toward their classroom’s rear door. Yujin slid it open just enough to peek inside—
Shin Dahye
Teacher! Haneul and Yujin are sneaking in again!
Every head turned. Yujin sighed. Haneul muttered something under her breath.
Kim Nari [Teacher]
Song Haneul. Seo Yujin. First day of the semester, and you’re late? ❄️
Song Haneul
It's only... a little late.
Kim Nari [Teacher]
Fine for you again, Haneul. And don’t think I've forgotten last semester’s record.
Haneul groaned loudly, slumping into her seat while Yujin sit beside her, keeping her head down.
Song Haneul
*Whispering* Okay hear me out.
Song Haneul
*Whispering* I’ll work at the convenience store for a week and place the money there again, you'll just have to help me get the money from the—
Song Haneul
I swear I'll place there like alway—
Haneul leaned closer, putting on her best puppy eyes.
Song Haneul
Yuuujin... help mee. Pleaasee.
Seo Yujin

Chapter 2
Seo Yujin
Ugh you're impossible
Song Haneul
*Grin* or just unique
The classroom door slid open again.
Kim Nari [Teacher]
Ah, here comes our repeater. *sarcastically*
Gasps and whispers spread through the room.
Haru stepped inside, eyes fixed on the floor, shoulders slightly hunched. She gripped the strap of her bag tightly.
Student 1
*Whispering* She failed? Again?
Student 2
*Snickering* Told you.
Haru ignored them and moved toward an empty desk at the back–until the teacher spoke again.
Kim Nari [Teacher]
Not there. You'll sit beside Seo Yujin. Maybe she can help you pass this time.
Haneul’s head snapped up. Her chair screeched against the floor as she stood up.
Song Haneul
What?! We’ve been desk mates since kindergarten—
Kim Nari [Teacher]
And maybe it's time for a change. Unless you’d like another fine? ❄️
Haneul froze, glaring at Haru as the quiet girl sat beside Yujin. Then, still fuming, she stomped over to the now-empty desk and dropped into it with a loud thud.
Kim Nari [Teacher]
Make sure you follow her lead and learn from her, Haru. Seo Yujin is our top student. Maybe it'll help you pass this time.
A few snickers spread around the classroom, but haru didn't react. She quietly placed her bag under the desk and took out her notebook.
Yujin, already flipping to a fresh page, ignored the noise and began writing the lesson title in her neat, precise handwriting.
Out of the corner of her eye, she noticed movement. Haru was... copying her? Same pen grip, same way of underlining the title, even the little flourish at the end of the line.
Yujin glanced sideways. Haru, catching her gaze, gave a small, shy tooth smile—half-apologetic, half-innocent.
Yujin rolled her eyes and turned back to her notes, her voice flat but her thoughts warmer than she’d admit
Seo Yujin
( She's annoying... but kind of cute. )
The movement passed quietly–until the back door opened again.
The back door creaked open again, drawing every pair of eyes in the room. A tall girl stepped in the room, her posture straight, chin slightly lifted like she owned the air she breathed. Her uniform was perfectly pressed, but her expression carried the kind of disinterest that could cut glass.
The teacher raised an eyebrow, her voice laced with mock politeness.
Kim Nari [Teacher]
Ah... our transfer student has arrived. Care to introduce yourself to the class?
The girl let out the faintest sigh, shifting her bag higher on her shoulder. She didn’t looked at the students, only at the teacher.
Beak Seoyeon
Beak Seoyeon. I'm only here for six months, so don’t bother trying to be friends with me. After that, I'm transferring to Seongmin Academy.
A ripple went through the class—whispers breaking out instantly. Seongmin Academy. The name itself carried weight. Expensive tuition, elite programs, the kind of place you only got into if your family had money or influence.
Seoyeon’s gaze finally swept across the room, not in curiosity but in quiet challenge. When her eyes landed on the only empty desk–right beside Haneul—she started walking toward it.
The teacher stopped her mid-step.
Kim Nari [Teacher]
Before you sit, let's make one thing clear. This is a strict school. I don’t care where you came from—your family’s name doesn’t work here. You follow the rules.
Seoyeon only tilted her head slightly, a faint smirk tugging at her lips.
She took the seat beside Haneul, who was slouched in her chair, doodling in the margin of her notebook and muttering under her breath about the injustice of losing her desk mate to "Miss Perfect."
Before Haneul could ignore her completely, Dahye swiveled in her seat, eyes sparkling with fake friendliness.
Shin Dahye
Beak Seoyeon... Did you say Seongmin Academy? is it true you’re transferring there?
Seoyeon didn’t even bother looking up from unpacking her pen case.
Beak Seoyeon
You heard me the first time.
Dahye’s excited grin faltered slightly, but she quickly masked it, leaning back in her chair as whispers about Seoyeon’s wealthy background filled the room again. Yujin rolled her eyes so hard it was a miracle they didn’t get stuck, deciding Seoyeon was exactly the kind of person she didn’t like.
Chapter 3
The whispers had barely died down before Dahye leaned forward again, resting her chin on her palm like she was trying to be casual. Her voice carried that sugary tone she used whenever she wanted something.
Shin Dahye
Seoyeon, right? You know... transferring to Seongmin Academy is really impressive. My uncle’s friend’s daughter tried but didn’t even get past the interview. You must be super talented. We should hang out sometime—
Seoyeon didn’t look up. She slid a mechanical pencil into place inside her pen case, then finally met Dahye’s gaze with a slow, measured glance.
Beak Seoyeon
I'm not interested in hanging out. And I'm sure your uncle’s friend’s daughter will recover from the rejection eventually.
Haneul snorted, covering her mouth with her hand as Dahye’s smile froze like a mask about to crack. A few students bit back laughs, but the teacher’s voice cut through the noise.
Kim Nari [Teacher]
Beak Seoyeon, don't you think you’re being rude to your classmates? ❄️
Kim Nari [Teacher]
💢 I don't know how your last school tolerated that kind of attitude, but here, you’ll show respect to your teachers.
Beak Seoyeon
Respect is earned.
Gasps rippled across the classroom. Even Yujin’s pen paused mid-word. The teacher’s jaw tightened, her ego clearly taking the hit.
Kim Nari [Teacher]
Fine. Since you seem to think you’re so high, you can take on more responsibility. Starting today, you're the class monitor.
Seoyeon raised an eyebrow, utterly unbothered.
Beak Seoyeon
Class monitor?
The teacher gestured toward the window near the front row, where a small wooden box sat on a shelf by the wall.
Kim Nari [Teacher]
See that box? You’re in charge of it. Collect the contributions from your classmates and keep it safe.
Seoyeon got up, walked over, and inspected it like she was checking for dust.
Beak Seoyeon
What is this?
Kim Nari [Teacher]
Charity. The money goes to orphanage we support. Give if you want, don’t if you don’t want to. It's voluntary.
Seoyeon closed the lid and turned back toward her, her tone dry.
Beak Seoyeon
So I'm basically babysitting loose change?
The teacher’s face reddened, but before she could respond, she carried the box back to her desk and set it down without a care, her attention already shifting to her notebook.
Haneul who was watching the whole interaction, held back a laugh. Her eyes landed on the box for more minutes then necessary before going back to Seoyeon. A almost amused look on her face.
Song Haneul
*Snickers* ( She's savage... I like her. )
