THE GIRL WHO LIT THE FIRE

Premonition

“Where am I?” I asked myself.

Everything is all black, am I perhaps dreaming? I hastily grabbed the night gown that I'm wearing as the surroundings changed. I'm standing in front of a lake, you'll clearly see a big mansion on the other side of it. I felt my body falling and closed my eyes out of panic. I opened my eyes and I was a little bit shocked as I realized that I'm in front of the mansion.

A lot of people gathered in front of it, gossiping and murmuring as if seeing a play. Firefighters are doing their best to put the fire out. I looked at the room engulfed by flames, glanced at the crowd and sighed.

“What happened here?”, I shouted hoping that someone would answer me. No one did.

Well, of course this is a dream ain't no way someone would answer me. That'd be creepy. Everyone continued to do their roles and I simply didn't exist. That's to be expected. I've been experiencing this sort of thing for a long time and look at me still hoping that someone, anyone, would know this feeling. I twirled like some princess. Yup, it seems that the great me is losing my mind. I suddenly stopped and stumbled as I noticed something in my peripheral vision. An image. A figure. A girl in white dress on the dock at the other side of the lake. Wait, that is where I was standing earlier. I also noticed that she's looking straight at the burning room. I got curious, frowning at the room and glanced back at her direction.

It looks like my curiosity is short-lived. Everything went black, again! And suddenly I'm beside her.

Dressed in a white silk dress she looks like a fairy princess. Her long and wavy blonde but almost white hair danced as the wind blew. Her light blue eyes shined like jewels under the moonlight, her gaze is as deep as the sea. Innocent but elegant features like an angel, fair and smooth skin, she is a Goddess. I was in awe while examining something, I mean someone so beautiful. I was taken aback as I saw tears flowing from her eyes slowly.

She whispered something with her low and angelic voice it was low but high enough for me to hear. She said, “No one can stop me” and she looked at me, “can you?” I froze for a moment and I realized that she was talking to me.

I felt the ray of the great sun on my face, specifically on my cheeks. I woke up. It was a dream. “Yeah, of course it is”, I said drably. It looks like I fell asleep on my sofa, my auburn hair sliding down my shoulders.

What an odd dream.

I heard the door opening and a shadow of a young man can be seen. “You okay? Sleeping on the sofa, again. You never learn. The inspector will be coming today so fix your hair, put the book down, and change your clothes. I made pancakes and tea.” and here it is Clee's long line that I often hear.

“How rude of you to barge in a lady's room”, I said glaring at him. “Oh, you're a lady? That's a shocking discovery!” he said sarcastically with a smirk. I threw my pillow on him. Curse him and his reflexes, he quickly shut the door avoiding my pillow throwing attack. I grumbled, fixed myself, and went downstairs.

I live in a two storey house with my partner, Cleerane Ronjiane, we are both detectives. Clee with his red hair and dark blue eyes is gorgeous. His chiseled and handsome face along with his perfect body is just breathtaking. I don't even know how he and I started this whole detective duo thing. I can't remember it nor do I want to. Our house serves as our agency.

We ate breakfast and as soon as we finished our meal the doorbell rang. “Liern, open the door”, Clee said. I opened the door and saw the Inspector, he's with a woman. I guided them inside and politely offered for them to sit. Clee served tea and sat beside me. He smiled at our guest and introduced himself the ‘Clee way’, it's kinda annoying, seeing all of these imaginary flowers floating around him is something that I became accustomed to. With an inner ‘ughh’, I forced a smile and stated my name. I can literally see Clee trying his best to not laugh. This man honestly. I hit him with my elbow and smiled brightly as his face crumpled with pain.

“Uhmm...Good morning, sorry to bother you, I am Dinarry Lollia-Idrianna. To make the story short, I want you guys to investigate the mysterious death of my daughter 5 years ago, her name was Cyul Idrianna.”

A Case From 5 Years Ago

‎“The what?” I asked Clee annoyingly. “Aren't you listening? I said the case from five years ago was famous”, he said after a sigh.

‎“I heard you. But do we really need to go and stay at their house. And what's with this name...”, I said with a bored expression on my face as I saw the newspaper from a few years ago about a case entitled 'the girl who lit the fire'. “The family was well-known so of course many people would be interested in it. Don't complain and start packing your things.”

‎After hours of arguing with him I finally started packing my things because we will depart tomorrow. Cyul Idrianna, she's a Goddess but why would someone like her commit something like that.

‎Everything is black.“Can you?”, her words confused me. A beautiful goddess is asking me if I can stop her. I normally wouldn't interfere with my dreams but this is different. I looked at her seriously and said, “If I can, I will”. She laughed like an angel, “Miss Witch, it's already too late”. I looked straight into her eyes that were filled with sadness and whispered “I will make sure to stop it even if it's late already, I will stop it.”

‎“Liern! Hey...Liern! Get up, we've arrived!”, it was Clee's annoying voice. “Yeah...yeah I will, so stop shouting, you're annoying”, I said as I gave him attitude. A huge house was in front of us when we came out of the vehicle. It was old but the beauty remains. “We're here. Welcome to the Idrianna mansion”, I turned around and saw a lake, at the other side of it was the dock where that girl was crying. Honestly everything looks so connected that it will be a mistake to call it a coincidence. “Liern, what are you doing? Let's go!”, I followed Clee inside. So old and vintage, that's what I thought upon entering.

The whole mansion is so quiet that you can hear the clacking noise made by our shoes. I looked at the fireplace and saw a family picture. They look so happy in it. I saw another picture of a young girl. She looks so pure like an angel, so beautiful like a Goddess. Her name was engraved on the picture frame. “Cyul Idrianna...”, I whispered. “Let me guess. You're thinking that she looks like a pure and beautiful angel, am I right? Well, she does. Inside and out lives a gorgeous young lady. Pale but lively. She shines like a real star in this gloomy village.” Mrs. Idrianna muttered in a proud but sad voice,

I smiled and looked at her, “She definitely is, she looks so happy in this photo. I find it hard to believe that she can do such a thing to herself. It's kinda tragic.”

‎“Milady”, an innocent maid said in a low and beautiful voice. “Oh...yeah, Miss Ishan, Mister Ronjiane...you can find your rooms with her help.” The maid bowed and smiled, “Chierie Kailrè, at your service. I shall accompany you to your rooms.”

‎So long. I said internally. Why does this corridor have to be this long? And you can't even hear anything. These two won't even bother to talk. Due to its wall being transparent glass anyone walking here would see both the garden and the lake. Such a fascinating view but it gives me chills. It looks so lovely but I can feel sadness hidden in its beauty.

‎“We're here!” the maid cheerfully said while standing in front of a wooden door. “This room is for Mister Ronjiane”, she turned to us and pointed at another wooden door in front of it, “and this is for you, Miss Ishan”. Clee went inside his designated room and closed the door without a word. That man is such a pain. He didn't even say 'thank you'.

“Thank you, Chierie”, I smiled at her, she smiled back at me and I thought that she was so sweet. “Just doing my job Miss, but welcome. I hope you find the whole truth in this chaotic case. Enjoy your stay and if you happen to need anything just ask me or any maid here. We will not hesitate to help you.”

Just Why

As soon as I entered the room, I felt exhausted. I laid down on the bed and decided to sleep.

‎“You're kinda funny, Miss Witch. I am curious. What will you do? How would you stop it?”, her angelic voice echoed. We're still looking at the burning room. We stayed silent. Until I couldn't take it anymore. “Hey...if I ask you something would you give the right answer?”. She shrugged and gently said, “maybe, it depends on your question”. I continued, “why did you do it? Any reason?”. She didn't answer it. “Do you even plan to answer one question of mine?”, I said with annoyance.

‎She smirked, “well, honestly I can't even if I wanted to”. I already expected it. But I can't help but ask all the questions I have in mind. I sighed, “...fine, can I tell you the questions that are bothering me. We will start to investigate tomorrow but I still have questions, a lot of them.” I waited for her reply and when she stayed quiet for a while I decided to continue. “Your mother is so fond of  you, I can feel it. Your family is lively. The house is quiet but I can say that it was a nice and cozy place filled with love and happiness. So I don't understand why? Just why? Did something happen?”, I looked at her and breathed heavily, “did you really do it?”. She looked at me and smiled, the fire reflected in her eyes. “Find it out”, she said and everything went black. I can feel my body falling and I opened my eyes.

‎The room is silent and dark. I stood up and looked at the window where the garden and the lake, the location where she was standing. “I have a bad feeling about everything that happened. Miss Cyul Idrianna, the girl who lit the fire.”

The silence in the room disappeared because of a loud knock. “Liern, come out it's already evening!” it's just Clee. I changed my clothes and opened the door. I looked at him with a piercing glare. “Took you long enough, wait, am I supposed to be scared of that”, he said in a sarcastic tone while pointing at my eyes. I ignored him and saw Chierie waiting for us.

The corridor was long, and I couldn't get used to it. Due to the silence I decided to open my mouth and said, “I dreamt, again.” Clee looked at me with curious eyes while Chierie stayed quiet. “A young girl in white silk dress, blond but almost white hair standing on the dock looking at a room caught in a big fire”, I continued. Clee said nothing for a few seconds before he finally spoke, “I can see your curiosity Liern”.

The wooden door opened and the whole family looked at us with confusion. Chierie bowed and Mrs. Idrianna smiled. I looked at each of them as I walked inside. I knew them because Mrs. Idrianna gave us their pictures with some basic information.
