Ashes Beneath The Crown
1
A world shaped by spirits (usually the size of palm and possess immense power but can unleash their potential only through hosts) and Alchemy, where unseen forces govern the elements through ancient contracts.
The land is steeped in tradition, where spirit bearers walk among nobles, and every flicker of fire or ripple of wind may carry a will of its own.
Empires rise on the backs of elemental pacts, and forgotten shrines sleep beneath moss-covered ruins.
Spirits of fire, water, wind, and earth are known — but whispers speak of others, rarer, older... and some, never meant to be found.
It is a world of quiet grandeur, where power lies not in steel, but in the bonds between souls and spirits, and where the past is never truly buried — only sealed, and waiting.
Long before empires rose, the world was raw and wild — ruled not by kings, but by spirits.
Born from the primal elements, these beings shaped fire, water, wind, and stone. They were neither worshipped, nor feared — only understood by those rare few who could see them.
The first of those were the Spiritbearers, mortals who signed sacred contracts and became bridges between the seen and unseen.
The Spiritbearers are not chosen. They are born — marked at birth by an invisible thread that ties them to the unseen.
Spiritbearers are rare individuals who possess the ability to see, hear, and ultimately form contracts with elemental beings known simply as Spirits
These spirits — Wind, Fire, Water, Earth, and rarer forces like Thunder, Light, Void, and the theorized Abyss — cannot act in the physical world without a bearer to anchor them
A spiritbearer's bond is sacred and dangerous.
Once a contract is signed, the spirit can channel its full power through its host. In return, the bearer gains supernatural abilities aligned with that spirit — but at a cost :-
THE MORE SPIRITS ONE BEARS, THE SHORTER THEIR LIFESPAN BECOMES.
From these unions, alchemy was born, and with it, the power to build cities, cure plagues, and bend the world to will. Kingdoms flourished. Temples were raised. Records etched in gold and bone.
Some spirits were erased. Others forbidden.
And Abyssus, the spirit of the Abyss, was left to legend — too vast to name, too quiet to dismiss.
Now, the empire of Athelgard stands atop centuries of peace.
That is what has been recorded in the history books, at least.
The sunlight filtered gently through the sapphire windows of the Imperial Winter Palace.
Evangeline, the princess, one of the many children of the Emperor of Athelgard, sat among the many noble ladies of high society.
Fake laughters, eyes full of suspicion, words of manipulation, everything could be heard through the empty hallways of the Palace.
And yet, Snow danced silently outside, but within its grand halls, all was still — until a whisper disturbed the silence.
Maids
"Your Highness! ..It's her Grace, Beatrix." *breathless*
Evangeline Paraz Athelia
*turns sharply, her silver-threaded gown barely rustling*
Around her, nobles whispered about velvet gowns and inheritance laws, but those words meant little.
Evangeline Paraz Athelia
Everyone is dismissed now. *starts walking towards the maid*
Everyone looked at Evangeline with curious eyes, but excused themselves politely.
Evangeline Paraz Athelia
*turns towards the maid* What about Bea?
Maids
She collapsed in the corridor near her mother’s chamber. The healers... they say it’s no common fever. *looking down at the ground*
Evangeline Paraz Athelia
*frowns* Why didn't you tell me any sooner? Let's go!
Evangeline Paraz Athelia
(Beatrix hasn't ever fallen so ill to have collapsed just anywhere. Never in the seventeen winters. What exactly happened?)
Evangeline rushed towards the West Wing of SilverBane Palace, followed by the maid.
In the west wing of the SilverBane palace, Beatrix lay pale and trembling on her bed.
By the time Evangeline arrived at the west wing of the palace, the halls were tense. The scent of herbal incense clouded the air as two royal healers exited Beatrix’s chambers with furrowed brows.
Physician
Your Highness *bows down*
Evangeline Paraz Athelia
*nods* What's with Bea?
Physician
But the fever is strange.
Physician
No signs of poisoning. No known illness. The spirits around her…
Physician
…they are silent.
Evangeline Paraz Athelia
*worried*
Evangeline Paraz Athelia
(But her spirits are the most cheerful ones...)
Evangeline Paraz Athelia
I see.. You're excused for now.
Physician
*bows and leaves*
Evangeline Paraz Athelia
*sighs and enters Bea's bed chamber*
She entered the room alone.
Beatrix lay pale against the velvet sheets. Her face was flushed with heat, sweat clinging to her pale golden curls.
Tonitrus, her thunder spirit, usually glowing with crackling energy, hovered silently at her bedside, dim and still.
Ventus, the whispering wind spirit, flickered weakly near her chest like a dying candle.
A/N: Beatrix has signed a contract with 2 spirits.
Evangeline Paraz Athelia
*approaches Beatrix*
Evangeline Paraz Athelia
Bea... *whispers gently*
Evangeline Paraz Athelia
*brushes her hand over Bea's brows*
Beatrix Paraz Athelia
*eyelids flutter*
Beatrix Paraz Athelia
Eva… Is it you? *weak voice*
Evangeline Paraz Athelia
Shhh… Just rest. *strokes Bea's head gently*
Beatrix Paraz Athelia
No, Eva…
Beatrix Paraz Athelia
*stirred* That was so real.
She looked at Evangeline with teary eyes.
Suddenly, the door burst open and two figures came jumping over at Evangeline.
Camilla Von Edgar
*pulls Eva's ear* What exactly did you do to make the brightie cutie Beatrie cry, hmm?
Evangeline Paraz Athelia
*flinch* C-Cami, that hurts...
Evangeline Paraz Athelia
Let go *holds Cami's hand*
Amandine Von Edgar
*sigh* Cami, let her go… Bea is ill.
Camilla Von Edgar
Hmph, okay!
Camilla Von Edgar
*lets go off Eva's ear*
Amandine Von Edgar
Anyway.. Bea, I heard you collapsed.
Amandine Von Edgar
How exactly did you ended up collapsing right in front of your mother's old chamber?
Amandine Von Edgar
Don't tell me you went there willingly, knowing that, no one, not even the emperor is allowed to go to that place.
Amandine Von Edgar
*frowns and crosses arms*
Beatrix mother's old chamber, her mother's death was way too mysterious.
Whatever happened was clearly a murder, but not a single clue was found, not even the ones with blessing of Liora found anything. (The spirit of light.)
Thus, it was labelled as a suicide by the investigators.
Beatrix Paraz Athelia
*pressed her lips* I-
Camilla Von Edgar
You Big Idiot! *smacks Aman's head*
Amandine Von Edgar
Ouch! …why?? *turns to Camilla*
Camilla Von Edgar
Are you blind? Can't you see she's sick? Where's your conscience, huh? *pokes Aman's head*
Amandine Von Edgar
What? I am worried about her, that is why I —
Camilla Von Edgar
You're just stressing her out!
Amandine Von Edgar
I'm not!
Beatrix Paraz Athelia
Don't fight…
While everyone was busy among themselves, thoughts kept on crossing Eva's mind.
Evangeline Paraz Athelia
(I refuse to believe Bea went to the Steel Rose Palace without a reason.)
Evangeline Paraz Athelia
(That place has been abandoned for so long.)
Evangeline Paraz Athelia
(Plus, Bea hates that place as that's where her mother died.)
Evangeline Paraz Athelia
(There's no way she went there on her own accord…)
Evangeline Paraz Athelia
*looks at Bea*
Beatrix Paraz Athelia
*asking Aman and Cami to calm down*
Evangeline Paraz Athelia
(I wonder why…)
Evangeline Paraz Athelia
(…and how did she end up there?)
Evangeline Paraz Athelia
(And what did she mean when she said "it was so real"?)
Over the next three days, Beatrix drifted in and out of fevered dreams, muttering fragments:
“The sky cracked.”
“Ashes in the wind…”
“A voice… I couldn’t see it…”
“Everything was gone…”
Her friends visited in turns — Amandine, Camilla, Aurelia — each bringing rare herbs, ancient healing scrolls, and worry that deepened with every silent hour.
And then, on the fourth morning, the fever broke.
2
Beatrix’s fever faded like a dream at dawn.
By the fourth day, she could sit upright, pale but conscious, watching the frost melt on her chamber windows.
Amandine read to her softly, while Camilla snuck in sweets and warm cloaks scented with lilac.
Aurelia Schwitzer, their close friend, stayed silent most of the time, scribbling thoughts in the margins of a thin journal she never let out of her sight.
And Evangeline hasn't left Beatrix's side ever since.
Tonitrus still hadn’t spoken.
Ventus hovered like a sleeping moth near Beatrix’s pillow, wings still but not gone.
Beatrix Paraz Athelia
*sitting on her bed, resting herself onto the pillows*
Evangeline Paraz Athelia
*sitting beside her bed*
Evangeline Paraz Athelia
How do you feel now?
Beatrix Paraz Athelia
*tries to smile*
Beatrix Paraz Athelia
I feel better *hoarse but steady voice*
Beatrix Paraz Athelia
But it's… Quite.
Evangeline Paraz Athelia
The palace?
Beatrix Paraz Athelia
No… I don't mean the palace.
Beatrix Paraz Athelia
I mean, the inside.
Evangeline Paraz Athelia
*worried*
Evangeline Paraz Athelia
(Maybe I shouldn't ask her about what happened right now.)
Beatrix Paraz Athelia
*looks down* It was horrible
Evangeline Paraz Athelia
Huh?
Beatrix Paraz Athelia
I was standing all alone, amidst of destruction.
Beatrix Paraz Athelia
A cataclysm.
Evangeline Paraz Athelia
What-?
Beatrix Paraz Athelia
In my dream…
Evangeline Paraz Athelia
A-Ah, I see…
Beatrix Paraz Athelia
But believe me, it was weird… Too weird…
Beatrix Paraz Athelia
*looks at Eva*
Evangeline Paraz Athelia
*grasps Bea's hand*
Beatrix Paraz Athelia
I was there…
Beatrix Paraz Athelia
I searched and searched but found no one…
Beatrix Paraz Athelia
Until I did find someone…
Beatrix Paraz Athelia
I couldn't see their face, they had a cloak on
Beatrix Paraz Athelia
They were saying something…
Beatrix Paraz Athelia
In a language, I've never heard before…
Beatrix Paraz Athelia
Everything was falling towards destruction…
Beatrix Paraz Athelia
And… I saw mother-
Evangeline Paraz Athelia
*more worried* What…?
Beatrix Paraz Athelia
That person, there were more of such people…
Beatrix Paraz Athelia
They were performing a ritual, and mother…
Beatrix Paraz Athelia
I think… My mother was the sacrifice…
Evangeline Paraz Athelia
*eyes widened* No-
Beatrix Paraz Athelia
*teary eyes* I… I didn't know what to do…
Evangeline Paraz Athelia
*hugs Bea* It's okay, calm down…
Beatrix Paraz Athelia
*hugs back* Eva, do you think if I were there, mother wouldn't have left me?
Evangeline Paraz Athelia
Shhh… Bea, don't think about it…
Evangeline Paraz Athelia
She didn't die, Bea…
Evangeline Paraz Athelia
Remember, a person doesn't truly dies until even one person remembers them…
Evangeline Paraz Athelia
And so many people remember her…
Evangeline Paraz Athelia
She's still with us, in our hearts, in our memories…
Evangeline Paraz Athelia
Don't say so…
Evangeline Paraz Athelia
*pats her back*
Beatrix Paraz Athelia
I… I'm sorry for making you worried. *sobs*
Evangeline Paraz Athelia
You didn't… It's not your fault…
Evangeline Paraz Athelia
*keeping patting her back*
Beatrix Paraz Athelia
*slowly falls asleep*
Evangeline Paraz Athelia
Bea?
Evangeline Paraz Athelia
(Seems like she fell asleep)
Evangeline Paraz Athelia
(But… What do I do about this now?)
Eva was sitting beside Beatrix, hugging and patting her until she fell asleep.
But Beatrix was hugging Eva with an extreme force. And so, Eva wasn't able to free herself and remained there in the same position.
After sometime, Evangeline also fell asleep alongside Beatrix.
Life in the Winter Palace resumed its steady rhythm of court meetings, dances, and bitter politics dressed in perfume.
Beatrix rejoined them all — slightly slower, slightly quieter — but the laughter returned, and so did her appetite.
Her dream of fire and ash was not mentioned again.
Perhaps they all wanted to believe it was simply a fever dream, nothing more.
And continued with their daily lives nonetheless.
But the peace didn't remain for long.
It was three weeks later when the first ripple appeared.
The first day of Rellimar, a festival of blessings and lanterns, marked the slow approach of spring.
Camilla, ever the most devout among them, rose early and went alone to the Chapel of Liora, nestled within the older quarters of the capital — a quiet sanctuary built to honor the light-giving spirits.
She had visited it dozens of times before. It was familiar, sacred, peaceful.
Camilla Von Edgar
*lights the lantern*
She lit a lantern at the altar — a simple rite to offer thanks to her bonded spirit, Lumen — and whispered the prayer of guidance:
Camilla Von Edgar
*closes her eyes*
Camilla Von Edgar
"Light that we carry…"
Camilla Von Edgar
"Light that carries us…"
Camilla Von Edgar
"Cast no shadow unless it shields…"
Camilla Von Edgar
"And guide us when the world dims…"
Camilla Von Edgar
*opens her eyes*
When she opened them, the lantern flame twisted.
Not upward — but sideways. Toward her.
A hiss, like a serpent through cold grass.
Camilla Von Edgar
*stumbles back* Huh…
Camilla stumbled back, the shards falling like rain at her feet, but nothing touched her. The flame rose once — blue and sharp — then vanished.
The reflection of that serpent vanishing could be seen in her amber eyes.
Camilla Von Edgar
*shocked* What… was that?
She didn’t scream. She didn’t run.
But she could feel it — the space where Lumen usually sat near her shoulder was empty. Cold.
Camilla Von Edgar
Where did you go?
Camilla Von Edgar
*looks around*
The attending priestess collapsed in a faint behind her.
Camilla Von Edgar
Huh? Miss…
Camilla Von Edgar
*shakes her* Miss…?
Camilla Von Edgar
Someone, help!
People around the place were also in a phase of shock, until they were not.
Some people brought water, and some helped her get up.
The priestess, then, went towards her chamber to rest.
Camilla Von Edgar
*looking around restlessly*
Camilla Von Edgar
Where did Lumen go?
Camilla Von Edgar
*worried*
Camilla Von Edgar
I can't feel her anywhere…
Later that day, the girls gathered in Evangeline’s solar — the quietest wing of the palace, far from the gilded noise of politics.
Camilla sat with her fingers laced tightly in her lap, her voice low and measured.
Camilla Von Edgar
It wasn't a blessing.
Camilla Von Edgar
It felt …wrong.
Camilla Von Edgar
*looking at her hands*
Camilla Von Edgar
Not like a warning.
Camilla Von Edgar
Not like a punishment.
Camilla Von Edgar
Just something…
Camilla Von Edgar
It was like… It wanted to reach me.
Camilla Von Edgar
I left something…
Camilla Von Edgar
But I can't describe what it was…
Amandine Von Edgar
And Lumen?
Amandine asked, glancing instinctively at the orb of flickering fire at her side — Ignis, ever vibrant.
Camilla Von Edgar
*shakes her head*
Camilla Von Edgar
No sign of her.
Camilla Von Edgar
She hasn't returned.
Camilla Von Edgar
Not even a flicker since the morning. *whispers*
Beatrix Paraz Athelia
*stare*
Beatrix stared at her quietly from her place by the hearth.
Beatrix Paraz Athelia
That's what it felt like for me.
Beatrix Paraz Athelia
When the fever came.
Amandine and Beatrix were trying to comfort Camilla.
Their spirits Tonitrus, Ventus, and Ignis roamed around the place as they were unable to sense Lumen.
While Aurelia was lost in a deep thought.
Evangeline Paraz Athelia
Lia…
Aurelia Schwitzer
*snaps out* Oh? Yes?
Evangeline Paraz Athelia
What do you think of this situation?
Aurelia Schwitzer
I don't know how to explain.
Aurelia Schwitzer
It's all weird.
Aurelia Schwitzer
Nothing like this has been recorded in the History of Athelgard.
Aurelia Schwitzer
The blessing of Liora turning into a serpent.
Aurelia Schwitzer
I think, I would need to do some research.
Aurelia Schwitzer
Plus, Lumen went missing after that.
Aurelia Schwitzer
There has to be something in the books.
Aurelia Schwitzer
Do you think Lumen was just scared?
Evangeline Paraz Athelia
*shakes her head*
Evangeline Paraz Athelia
Lumen isn't the one to get scared so easily.
Evangeline Paraz Athelia
Plus, she's very protective of Cami…
Evangeline Paraz Athelia
I don't think she would do nothing when serpent tried to attack Cami
Aurelia Schwitzer
*nods* True.
Aurelia Schwitzer
I'll see what I can find.
Evangeline Paraz Athelia
*nods* Mhmm.
Evangeline Paraz Athelia
(One after another, different incidents keep on happening.)
Evangeline Paraz Athelia
(I wonder what's going on.)
Evangeline looked at her friends, at the subtle fear tightening around their eyes, like frost creeping into windowpanes.
3
The courtyards of the palace glittered with early frost, the white stones rimmed with silver beneath the morning light.
A cold wind snuck through the latticed windows, rustling the velvet drapes of Evangeline’s study.
Vivian's return from Chronos had been delayed twice — first by snow blocking the mountain passes, then by a sudden illness among her retinue.
But on the fifteenth day of Rellimar, the sapphire banners of the Principality were spotted at the southern gate.
Vivian arrived in silence, not with fanfare, but under a quiet escort of white-cloaked guards.
And her face was… different.
Not weary — Vivian was too composed for that — but guarded.
Like someone who had seen something she wasn’t yet ready to speak of.
That evening, the girls reunited in Evangeline’s drawing room.
A fire crackled gently, casting long shadows along the polished floor.
They drank a winterberry cordial Amandine had brought and tried, half-heartedly, to rekindle their usual warmth.
But something hung in the air — like a veil none of them could name.
And finally, Evangeline asked —
Evangeline Paraz Athelia
How was Chronos?
Vivian held her cup for a moment, then set it down.
Vivian Scha'h Obiana
Different.
Vivian Scha'h Obiana
Even for Chronos.
Beatrix Paraz Athelia
What do you mean?
Vivian Scha'h Obiana
*glances at her*
Vivian Scha'h Obiana
Our spirits are restless, yes?
Vivian Scha'h Obiana
Yours have gone silent.
Vivian Scha'h Obiana
Mine…
Vivian Scha'h Obiana
Aqua's still with me.
Vivian Scha'h Obiana
But she's changed.
A soft swirl of blue mist shimmered behind her shoulder — Aqua, usually calm and smooth like rippling riverwater, now drifted in a fragmented, jagged pattern.
Vivian Scha'h Obiana
While I was there, in the southern estates…
Vivian Scha'h Obiana
There was a lake.
Vivian Scha'h Obiana
An ancestral spring.
Vivian Scha'h Obiana
Aqua led me to it.
Vivian Scha'h Obiana
I've been going there ever since I was a child.
Vivian Scha'h Obiana
But this time…
Vivian Scha'h Obiana
The water didn't move.
Amandine Von Edgar
*frowns* Didn't move?
Vivian Scha'h Obiana
Not from wind, not from touch…
Vivian Scha'h Obiana
Not even from spirits…
Vivian Scha'h Obiana
It was frozen, not solid but still.
Vivian Scha'h Obiana
Like a mirror that forgot how to reflect.
Camilla Von Edgar
What does that mean? *confused*
Aurelia Schwitzer
Vivian is a hydro spirit bearer.
Aurelia Schwitzer
She went there with Aqua, the hydro spirit itself.
Aurelia Schwitzer
It's like how Light source would shine even more when a Lux spirit is around.
Aurelia Schwitzer
Or how fireplace would feel warmer in winters when Ignis's is around.
Aurelia Schwitzer
The elements resonate with the spirit and show their cheerfulness.
Aurelia Schwitzer
The water of the pond didn't show any kind of excitement when Aqua, a hydro spirit was around.
Camilla Von Edgar
Does that mean the water of the pond is not water?
Aurelia Schwitzer
That's… not exactly what I mean.
Amandine Von Edgar
You're not the brightest one, afterall. *shakes head in disappointment*
Camilla Von Edgar
Hey! *glares at Aman*
Aurelia Schwitzer
*sigh* Anyway…
Aurelia Schwitzer
Did you try to find what happened there?
Vivian Scha'h Obiana
I don't know *shakes head*
Vivian Scha'h Obiana
The moment I stepped close, Aqua pulled me back.
Evangeline Paraz Athelia
She stopped you??
Vivian Scha'h Obiana
*nods* Yes.
Vivian Scha'h Obiana
She pulled at my sleeve.
Vivian Scha'h Obiana
She has never done that before.
Vivian Scha'h Obiana
Then she spoke.
Vivian Scha'h Obiana
Just once.
The spirits, they don't usually speak.
They do not speak causally.
They may whisper, stir the air, pulse with emotion — but actual words, spoken with intention, are rare and almost sacred.
When a spirit speaks, it means:
1. Something is wrong, beyond the normal rhythm of life.
2. The spirit is sensing or responding to something larger than its bond with the bearer.
3. The message may not be just for the bearer — but a warning to the world.
It's either one of these reasons, or maybe all of them.
Vivian Scha'h Obiana
*whispers* She said, "That is not ours."
Even the fire seemed to hush for a moment.
Aurelia Schwitzer
What's not ours?
Vivian Scha'h Obiana
*shakes head* I don't know
Vivian Scha'h Obiana
But there was something…
Vivian Scha'h Obiana
…beneath the lake.
Vivian Scha'h Obiana
It didn't move, but I felt like I was being watched.
Vivian Scha'h Obiana
It felt like…
Vivian Scha'h Obiana
…like it didn't belong to this world.
Camilla Von Edgar
*hugs her knees to her chest*
Camilla Von Edgar
I thought the chapel incident was an accident.
Camilla Von Edgar
But now… I'm not sure.
Evangeline Paraz Athelia
These incidents are happening one after another.
Evangeline Paraz Athelia
I don't think we can call them coincidences anymore.
Amandine Von Edgar
There's definitely something wrong with the spirits.
Vivian Scha'h Obiana
And whatever it is…
Vivian Scha'h Obiana
It doesn't want to be known…
After a few moments of silence, Beatrix spoke at last.
Beatrix Paraz Athelia
It's starting…
Beatrix Paraz Athelia
In my dream, water was the last thing to get burnt.
Beatrix Paraz Athelia
All the rest had already gone.
Beatrix Paraz Athelia
Earth, wind, fire, light…
Beatrix Paraz Athelia
But the sea… It stayed. Quiet.
Beatrix Paraz Athelia
Until it didn't.
Not until Aqua, still hovering faintly near Vivian’s shoulder, let out a soft, mournful hum — like a wave retreating into a dry and forgotten shore.
