Chapter 1
Cassie (FL)
Quantum mechanics can suck it. My brain is officially dead.
Harper (FL friend)
Girl, you need to get laid. That's the only cure.
Cassie (FL)
I need to get noticed first
Harper (FL friend)
You're hot, Cass. You just keep hiding it under that grandma sweater
Cassie (FL)
It's comfy. And safe
Harper (FL friend)
Safe doesn’t get you orga**s. Or Liam Hayes
Cassie rolled her eyes but couldn’t help the small smirk that tugged at her lips. Harper was everything she wasn’t—bold, fiery, magnetic. People orbited around her. Cassie… stayed in the shadows.
Liam Hayes walked in late as usual. The classroom energy shifted. He was tall, charming, a devil-may-care grin that made panties drop and professors sigh. Cassie’s heart stuttered in her chest.
Cassie (FL)
He’s here. Looking like sin and smelling like cologne I can’t afford
Harper (FL friend)
Go say hi. Or I will. And I’ll flash a b**b..😏
Cassie (FL)
No! I… I think I’m going to talk to him. For real. After class.😖
Harper (FL friend)
YES. Finally. Use those t*ts and brains. Dangerous combo..
Cassie (FL)
shut up Haper!
* blushes*
Cassie tried to focus on the lecture, but her mind was racing with every scenario of what she’d say to Liam.
The mood inside Cassie’s chest flipped like a switch. Her eyes narrowed. She didn’t even try to hide the irritation brewing behind her glasses.
Nate slid into the seat next to hers without asking, as usual.
Nate
Morning, sunshine. Did the mitochondria finally betray your soul?
Cassie (FL)
Please don’t talk to me. I’m already nauseous.😒
Nate
Aw, I missed you too, sweetheart.
You know you’d cry without my voice in your life..
Cassie let out a groan and shifted away.
Cassie (FL)
Harper. Kill me. Or kill him. Either works.
Harper (FL friend)
I Vote sleep with him out of spite. Enemies to lovers is trending.
Cassie (FL)
I'd rather set myself on fire
Harper (FL friend)
Just saying.. Or should I do it for you? he's a je*k sure.... but a se*y one.
The best one in college infact.
Cassie (FL)
Uhh..that's gross.
Nate Carter was infuriating. Arrogant. Always smirking like he knew her secrets. He made fun of her in front of everyone, and Cassie gave it right back. She couldn’t stand him. He couldn’t stand her. It was mutual venom, laced in sarcasm and eye rolls. But today wasn’t about him.
By the time class ended, her palms were sweaty, heart pounding. She approached Liam outside the lecture hall.. After getting pushed by Harper.
Liam turned, sipping his overpriced iced coffee, and looked her up and down
Liam
You’re… Cassie, right? From the nerd squad?
A few girls giggled nearby. Cassie’s cheeks burned
Cassie (FL)
I, um… I was wondering if maybe you’d want to grab a coffee sometime?
* blushing*
Liam let out a low laugh.
Cassie blinked, caught off-guard.
Liam
I mean… You’re cute in a librarian kind of way, but you’re just not… exciting.
Liam
I like girls who know how to have fun.
You? You look like you panic when someone says the word ‘c**k'
Liam
So.. Naah.. boring is definitely not my type.
I like someone who's bold, s**y, someone who knows biology and applies it too.😏
The laughter that followed stung like a slap. Her throat tightened. She mumbled something and turned, her vision blurring with tears.
Harper (FL friend)
Cass..wait..
But she was already out of site.
Later.
Harper texts Cassie
Harper (FL friend)
Where are you? I’ll kill him.
Cassie (FL)
Dorm. Just… want to disappear..
Harper (FL friend)
F**k him cass... He probably has a tiny d**k anyway. 🤬
Cassie didn’t respond. She curled up in bed, eyes burning, scrolling her phone with no destination.
That’s when the ad popped up about the app..named..
HOTLINE : Anonymous. Unfiltered. Unapologetic.
Curiosity warred with shame. But shame had already done enough damage
Cassie downloaded the app.
Her heart pounds as the app opens—dark background, bold red lettering pulsing like a heartbeat.
She hesitates at the profile setup, fingers hovering over the blinking cursor next to Username.
She thinks.. going through some options in her head.
> Cassie?
She snorts. Yeah, let’s just tattoo "Hi, it’s me!" across her forehead. Pass.
> Bunny?
Ugh. Too cheesy.
> SweetCass?
Sounds like she bakes cookies in a church dress. Absolutely not..
> NightLace…?
It sticks for a second. Dark. Whispery. A little sexy… if she squints.
She taps it in. Hits save.
Cassie (FL)
Even anonymous strangers aren’t texting me.
She mutters, tossing the phone onto her pillow.
But curiosity burns hotter than shame.
She snatches it back. Opens the app again.
Her lips part, and this time, she types it with her teeth sunk into her bottom lip.
Bold. Dirty. The kind of girl who doesn’t beg to be noticed—she dares you to look. Someone she wanted to be.
She taps save. Breathes in.

Chapter 2
My head snapped up.
i blinked, heart pounding like I’d been caught doing something wrong. I scrambled for the phone I’d tossed aside, suddenly hyper-aware of how hot my skin felt beneath the blankets.
There it was.
One message.
From a username I'd never seen before..
@deepsignal
Hotsiren...how hot are we talking about?
DeepSignal? The name alone made my cheeks flush. I sat up straighter, pulling my hair over one shoulder as if he could see me.
My breath caught up and I stared for the text, thinking for a reply.. Before
God. That was lame.
I stared at it for five full seconds before pressing send.
Message delivered.
Now what?
@deepsignal
That all I get, HotSiren?
A ‘hi’? You don’t sound like a siren.
My fingers hovered, trembling slightly before I typed again..
@deepsignal
No offense. You type like you just opened the app with both hands trembling
I pulled the blanket tighter around her. And looked around just to make sure if anyone was spying on me or something.. Because was it that obvious?
@hotsiren
I didn’t expect anyone to text me.
@deepsignal
Then consider me your surprise of the night.
He was playful, teasing. Not aggressive. But every word felt aimed just right
@hotsiren
I don't know you
@deepsignal
“You don’t have to know me to want to be known.”
@deepsignal
You don’t seem like the kind of girl who names herself ‘HotSiren'
My fingers hesitated. That hit close. Too close.
@hotsiren
What kind do I seem like then?
@deepsignal
The kind who tries to talk herself out of wanting something… and fails.
@deepsignal
Tell me I'm wrong
I swallowed hard. The screen blurred a little as I exhaled, warm breath fogging the glass.
@hotsiren
What do you want me to say?
God, that word felt heavy.
@hotsiren
That I’m bored. That I was curious.
@deepsignal
And heartbroken.
Wait? How did he?..
Before I could stress on it.. another message appears
@deepsignal
Curious is a beautiful start
My fingers hovered. I hated how fast my heart was pounding. Like he could hear it
@deepsignal
You’re not the only one, you know.
@hotsiren
What do you want?
@deepsignal
To watch someone shed her skin
A slow burn started low in my belly. My lips parted, but nothing came out. I couldn’t look away.
@hotsiren
You make it sound so dark.
@deepsignal
Not dark. Honest.
My thighs pressed together on instinct. I hated how fast my body responded. I hated that I wanted to see what he’d say next.
@hotsiren
You don't even know me.
@deepsignal
But I know what that ache feels like
@deepsignal
It shows up when the lights are off… when the fingers slide lower… when no one’s watching.
@deepsignal
It doesn’t go away by pretending.
It only fades when you stop running from it.
@hotsiren
You’re wrong. I'm not aching because I’m not that kind of a girl..
I hit send before I could second-guess it.
The moment it delivered, I regretted everything.
The typing bubble appeared almost instantly.
@deepsignal
No? That’s cute.
Cute?
My jaw clenched. I wasn’t trying to be cute. I was—
@deepsignal
Then why are you still here?
I stared at the screen. My lips parted..I didn't have an answer.
@deepsignal
Why did you change your username?
Why didn’t you log off the moment I messaged you?
The dots kept pulsing. I swear, they teased more than his words.
@deepsignal
You can lie to me, HotSiren.
@deepsignal
And that’s okay. You’ll stop.
The dots blinked again.
And then… nothing.
I sat there, staring at the screen like it might pulse back to life. Like maybe he’d come back with something. Something.
Why the hell did it bother me so much?i
I didn’t even know him. He could’ve been some creep, some loser playing games. And yet… there was something in the way he spoke. The quiet control. Like he didn’t need to try hard, because he already knew what buttons to press.
And he’d pressed all of mine.
God. I could still feel the words in my chest..
I wasn’t raw. I wasn’t undone. I was—
I stared at the screen again. Still no message.
And now I'm aching. Is this what he was talking about?
I groaned into my pillow and flipped onto my back, heart pounding as my thighs clenched like I could somehow erase the tension crawling up my spine.
I should’ve closed the app.
And now I didn't want to.

Chapter 3
My eyes burned as I stared blankly at the board, the professor’s voice somewhere in the background.
I hadn’t heard from him since last night.
Not even a dot to show that he was typing.
The audacity of a guy with no face and no name to leave me this pressed? Pathetic
Harper (FL friend)
You good? You look like you haven’t slept.
I blinked, snapped out of daze
Harper (FL friend)
You sure?
She leaned in.. eyeing me
Harper (FL friend)
Because you’ve been checking your phone every five seconds like you’re waiting for a boy to breathe on it
I felt the heat climb up my neck.
Harper (FL friend)
Nothing doesn’t make you look like you’re three seconds from combusting.
* smirks*
I avoided her eyes and tried to busy myself with my pen
Harper (FL friend)
You dreaming about someone, Hot Cassie?
* teases with a grin*
Cassie (FL)
Stop calling me that!
* blushes*
Harper (FL friend)
I will when you stop acting like you’re one wrong word away from moaning.
Harper (FL friend)
Who is he? * wriggles her eyebrows*
Hope he's someone better than that Fu**er Liam.
Cassie (FL)
I said it's nothing.
Harper (FL friend)
Fine, keep your secrets.
* pouts*
Harper (FL friend)
But I’m gonna find out eventually.
Before I could shut her down with a glare, a familiar voice cut through from behind us.
Nate
Careful, Rowe. Keep blushing like that and the classroom’s gonna catch fire
He slid into the row behind us, dropping his bag on the floor with zero grace and maximum arrogance. The professor didn't even say anything. They never did.
Nate
Didn’t think you were the type to fluster
Harper (FL friend)
Ugh, do you have to always be like this?
Nate ignored her and locked eyes with me again.
Nate
What are you hiding, Rowe?
But then he leans in close.. Whispering in my ear.
Nate
Must be something juicy. You look like someone just whispered filth in your ear
I pull away instantly and turn back toward the front, heart hammering way too hard.
His voice was too close, too knowing.
And I hated that he could get under my skin so fast.
Nate Carter.
If you ask me,if he's handsome? I'll say Yes.
Hot?... Yes.
Popular?. ..Big yes.
An a**hole?... The biggest yes yes.
God! I just hated him.. And the feelings were mutual.
Cassie (FL)
Go bother someone else
Nate
I'm good here
* smirks*
After class, Harper bounced ahead while I lagged behind. And that’s when I saw him.
Some leggy blonde with a squeaky giggle and lips too glossy to be real.
They stood by the vending machines. His hand brushed hers. That smile—the one I used to dream about—was all hers now.
I Tried to look away before he saw me.
Too late.
His eyes flicked up.
Locked on mine.
Just for a second.
Just long enough for the ache to twist again.
Just long enough to wonder—was it him?
Was he ' deepsignal?'....the one behind those texts?
No. Couldn’t be.
He didn’t even like me.
DORM ROOM - LATER AT NIGHT
I curled under my blanket, lights off, staring at my screen like a fool.
God! What the hell is wrong with me..I'm acting like some desperate bit**
But.. I can't stop the thoughts crawling up my mind..
Maybe he found me boring too?.. Just like liam..
I groaned and tossed the phone across the bed.
Stared at the ceiling.
One second.
Two.
Grabbed it back.
Opened the chat.
Still nothing.
I hesitated.
Typed.
Deleted.
Typed again.
@hotsiren
Nevermind. Just ignore me.
@hotsiren
I wasn’t waiting or anything. Just… couldn’t sleep.
@hotsiren
Okay. Maybe I was waiting..
I Hit send.
Closed my eyes. You didn't have to be so honest Cass.. 😖
Tried not to feel the sting of silence.
Until—
@deepsignal
I thought I lost you to the nice girls club
My fingers were moving before I could stop them..
@hotsiren
Thought maybe you forgot me.
shit! Why did I send that?..
Before I could delete..he had already read it
@deepsignal
I didn't forget
@deepsignal
I was giving you space..to admit you want me
@hotsiren
Don't flatter yourself
@deepsignal
Baby.. I don't need to
@deepsignal
You’re tucked under your blanket.
Phone pressed to your chest.
And your thighs haven’t stopped squeezing since you saw my name light up your screen.
I choked on air.
How the hell did he—
@deepsignal
I told you it’s not going away. Not until you admit it.
That your little fantasy… has a voice now.
@hotsiren
You don't know what I want
@deepsignal
Trust me baby.. I know exactly what you want.
@deepsignal
I won't say it though.. Don't wanna scare the little kitten away
I nearly dropped the phone.
My whole body was on fire. Skin burning. Heart thudding.
@deepsignal
Still there hotsiren?
@deepsignal
Don't tell me I already scared you off.
@deepsignal
Then why are you so quiet?
@deepsignal
Let's talk about something else.
@deepsignal
Like...your profile picture.. or the lack of it.
@deepsignal
You hiding baby?
I swallowed. Pulse kicking.
He noticed. Of course he did.
I looked at his—just a bare back, shadowed jaw, lips parted with a slow stream of smoke.
Face hidden, but it didn't matter. He already looked like trouble.
@hotsiren
there's nothing worth showing.
@deepsignal
That’s a lie.
And not even a good one.
@deepsignal
You picked a name like HotSiren, baby.
And I'm sure you came here for something.
@deepsignal
Don't back down now.
@deepsignal
Unless... you're not the girl you thought you could be.
I stared at the words. That one hit somewhere deep—where I hated being touched.
Liams words flooded in. "BORING"
My fingers moved before I could stop them.
@hotsiren
I Want to be that girl.
@hotsiren
But... I don’t know how.
The words looked pathetic the moment I sent them.
Too honest.
Too soft.
Vulnerable.. leaving me exposed.
A full minute passed.
No typing bubble. No response. Just the pounding in my chest.
And then—
Those three little dots.
@deepsignal
You just did.
You said it out loud.
Now you don’t have to figure it out alone.
@deepsignal
Every version of you.
And suddenly, the silence around me felt like a lie.
Because someone—some stranger—had just touched the part of me even I pretended didn’t exist.
