CHAPTER 2: DIALOGUE IN THE MIND

Chapter 2: Dialogues in the Mind

The rain persisted for weeks. It danced across Adrian's windows like a metronome counting down to something only he could feel. Inside his studio, dozens of portraits of Elara watched him with eyes both tender and distant.

He painted her in every moment they had never shared—Elara laughing under sunlight, whispering secrets on a train, reading a letter he never wrote.

Adrian to himself: “She’s with me. She just doesn’t know the depth of it yet. But she feels it. I saw it in her eyes.”

The more he created, the less real the outside world became. He began speaking to her—at first in passing, then in full conversations. At night, he would sit in the dim light of his easel and close his eyes.

Adrian to Imaginary Elara: “Did you see the gallery today? They moved your favorite painting to the main wall.”

Elara (in his mind) to Adrian: “It belongs there, Adrian. Just like I belong here—with you.”

He smiled, eyes wet with quiet joy. In the silence, her voice lived louder than truth.

But in reality, Elara remained untouched by his devotion. A polite smile, a nod of recognition, perhaps, but nothing more.

Dr. Kessler to Adrian: “Have you told her how you feel? In a real conversation—not in your head?”

Adrian to Dr. Kessler: “No… it would spoil everything. What we have now—it’s... pure.”

Dr. Kessler to Adrian: “What you have is a story. She hasn’t read a single chapter of it.”

His eyes dropped to the floor. But in his heart, Elara’s imagined hand brushed against his.

Later that week, Adrian found himself at the gallery again. Elara arrived, as expected. She stood near the painting that had become their shrine.

Adrian to Elara: “It’s strange, isn’t it? How we keep meeting like this.”

Elara to Adrian: “Coincidence, I suppose. Art has a way of calling the same hearts.”

Adrian to Elara: “Or maybe it's not coincidence. Maybe it’s the universe echoing something we’re too scared to say.”

She offered a gentle smile, one that acknowledged kindness, not connection.

Elara to Adrian: “Maybe. Or maybe some things just look deeper than they are.”

He wanted to say more. He wanted to scream the verses he had written for her in the walls of his mind. But her voice—his version of her—spoke louder.

Imaginary Elara to Adrian: “She’s only afraid, Adrian. Give her time. She’s yours.”

That night, he painted again. This time, not just her—but a life with her. A house drenched in golden light. A table set for two. Her smile, always turned to him.

Adrian to himself: “It’s all real. I just need to keep believing. Because love doesn’t lie. It just waits to be seen.”

In the growing quiet of his room, the canvas whispered back.
