"I can assure you Herr General I will get on it at once." Kommandant Konrad Aufswade said into the phone, his voice shaking. As he listened to the reply on the other end, a young woman entered the building.
"No, no. I will be thorough... Yes... I understand." with that he put the phone down, now visible sweating. That was when he noticed the woman, now standing at the desk. He stood. "Yes, how can I help?" he said as calm as can be.
"Kommandant Aufswade correct? Emma Heinzberg." She said.
"Heinzberg. Heinzberg? Oh yes, Miss Heinzberg, you called in for the receptionist job."
"Jawohl, Herr Kommandant." she replied.
"At last someone finally came in. All these phone calls, half of them absolute rubbish. I was starting to lose my mind. Welcome. Normally I would interview you, but I have things to do." he said, picking up a pile of papers. Then he stopped for a moment.
"You would not happen to be a man?" he said. Emma looked at him very confused.
"No, Herr Kommandant, why."
"Because the last receptionist I had turned out to be a man. I only found out after a full year. What made it worse was he spat in my coffee every morning and kept strange photos of the Führer in the desk drawer; it was unsettling."
"No need to worry Herr, Kommandant. I won't do such things."
"Good." he said half relieved. "Like I said, I'm busy today, so I'll let you work the day. Do a good job, it's yours, mess up... Honestly I'm so desperate you might still get it."
With that he turned towards his office. Emma sat down behind the desk as he went into his office, only to come straight out.
"One last thing Miss Heinzberg." he said, placing a photo down on the desk. "Take a look at this man." She looked at it; it was of a man with a cunning, almost mischievous smile. His British Commando's hat on, slightly skewed to the left. "Handsome, isn't he?" He asked. Emma looked from the photo to Konrad and gave a small nod. "He's also cunning, sly, a master of disguise and has been the pain in my bottom for the last year and a half." Konrad added.
"Why?" Emma asked.
"This man has been making my life difficult since this war ended. Sabotage, stealing documents among other things. His name is Hogan Hutch and should he step one foot in here I want you to apprehend him." he then placed a Walther P38 on the desk. "With force if need be."
Emma, a little shocked, just nodded.
"Good. I'll be in my office if you need me." Konrad smiled before going into his office and shutting the door.
Emma slipped the gun under the desk and began trying to tidy it a bit. She had just finished stacking papers when a man walked in, keeping his head down and going over to one of the walls. He looked at the painting that hung there, one of the Führer himself; Adolf Hitler. But he kept glancing at Emma, who had noticed his strange behavior.
"He looks better in this painting than real life, doesn't he?" the man said, in a British accent, turning to face her. "You are a new face here, what's your name?" he asked, flashing a cunning smile.
"Emma Heinzberg. I'm the Kommandant's new receptionist. Is there anything..." she suddenly recognized him and scrambled to her feet. "You... you are him, don't move." she said, though not sure how he would respond.
Hogan just chuckled. "What did he tell you about me?"
"That I am to apprehend you by any means necessary..." she said, pulling out the gun with a shaky hand. Hogan looked at her directly in the eye. It was all the assurance he needed; she could not bring herself to pull that trigger. Emma came around the desk, gun pointing at him. Hogan didn't flinch.
"Is that supposed to scare me sweetheart? Listen, I mean you no harm. I just want to see the Kommandant."
"No way." she said.
"Don't make me do this." he said. Emma felt a drop of fear run through her; what was he going to do. Carefully, Hogan raised his hands and stepped towards her. He locked eyes with her as he did so. He stopped and gently put his hands down on the gun, pushing the barrel towards the ground. By now, Emma was genuinely confused as to why he hadn't wrestled it from her. Without missing a beat, Hogan leaned in and kissed her. She was so taken aback that she released the gun into his hands.
He broke the kiss and stepped towards the office.
"Wait... Hey stop..."
"Relax sweetheart." Hogan said, pointing the gun up and leaning against the wall. "I've been in and out here for years; unless you're a bridge or something like that, I mean you no harm." Suddenly the gun went off as he accidentally pulled the trigger. Both of them jumped at the sudden bang.
"Why the hell was this thing already cocked? That's very unsafe." he said, tossing it aside. "I'll be back out before you know it sweetheart." With that he entered the office leaving Emma really confused.
......................
As Hogan entered the office he slammed the door in a hurry behind himself.
"Morning Kommandant." Hogan said. Konrad immediately dropped the page in his hand and sighed frustratedly. Hogan took no notice and sat down, as if he belonged there.
"What are you doing here Hogan. How did you get in? Did she just let you through?" Konrad asked.
Hogan smirked. "No, quite the opposite. She tried to shoot me. If it weren't for her bad aim I might have died."
Konrad looked up at him. "Are you serious?"
"Oh yeh. After she missed she got hold of me and almost broke my arm. I had to throw all the gentlemanliness aside to fight free and get in here."
Konrad scoffed. "You, a gentleman. I highly... Why am I having this conversation with you; get out!"
"I just got here. So, tell me: What's old Adolf up to?"
"You are to refer to the Führer by his title. And I shall tell you no such thing about the V-5 program."
"V-5, new rocket I presume?" Hogan said.
"Yes, and better... Get out!" Konrad said, slamming his fist against the desk. Hogan looked back at the door then at Konrad.
"I honestly feel safer here with you instead of passing by her again."
"Get out, or I might just call Miss Heinzberg to come fetch you."
"Alright, alright. No need to resort to violence." Hogan said, slowly making his way to the door. Cautiously he opened it then looked over at Konrad before exiting
......................
Hogan closed the door behind himself and made his way for the exit. He stopped for a moment and looked at Emma, who now seemed worried.
"No need to worry sweetheart; after that, the Kommandant won't want you going anywhere anytime soon." he said. "See you around." With that, Hogan exited the building and went over to a black Mercedes-Benz 770. The car had belonged to Hitler himself; until Hogan and his crew got swiped it. He climbed into the car and started it. He made sure to scratch the paint against the sidewalk. He hadn't learned much today, but his brief interaction with Emma gave him hope that things may get a bit easier.
The old building was just outside of Dresden and was never properly demolished after being burnt down during the bombing. It made the perfect location for a resistance and Hogan knew it; which is why he and his team built their base beneath it. The building itself had been searched by the Gestapo many times, but the secret entrance was never found.
Hogan pulled up to the building in the 770 before entering into a small makeshift garage, "accidentally" scraping the side of the car on the wall as he did. Inside the garage was Walter O'Krell; Hogan's right-hand man, and jack of all trades. They met in Africa, Walter was among the "non-white" South African prisoners taken prisoner in Tobruk whilst the "white" prisoners were taken to Germany. Though the prison camp was poorly constructed, so he slipped out easily and met Hogan sneaking around the battle scared city.
"Well, find anything?" Walter asked as Hogan climbed out of the car, not caring to use the door.
"They are building a new vengeance weapon. The V-5, apparently a new rocket. Aufswade was a little less talkative today however, so I did not get much." Hogan said then smirked. "The old Kommandant has got himself a new receptionist though."
"Nazi? Or Nazi sympathizer?" Walter asked.
"In this state, everyone is forced to be a Nazi sympathizer. But no, not a Nazi. I got past her quite easily; though as far as Konrad's concerned she almost killed me. She may be helpful to us."
"Are you sure? Or was she just very attractive,, and you are losing your edge?"
"What no. Alright maybe I found her a bit attractive, that's not the point. We need to get as much information on what they are building." Hogan said. "Rally the others."
................
It was not long before the whole gang was assembled, a rag-tag team Hogan had "put together" on his first ever rogue mission. And by put together he either recruited, unintentionally kidnapped or they just stuck around. Besides Hogan and Walter, the team consisted of:
Jonathan Flagg, a trigger-happy American tank commander who now lacked a tank always kept his two guns on him; usually shoved straight into his pants. Next was Vladimir Volkov, a Soviet pilot who spoke little but could fly almost any aircraft. Hogan had accidentally freed him from a train carrying prisoners, and he then just stuck around. Next was Carter Jockson, the not so bright British spy. Despite his dumb ideas and overall lack of common sense, he was the best German impersonator around. Last was Laura Williams, a British Red Cross nurse who now acted as the team medic. Shortly after recruiting Carter, Hogan stole an ambulance to escape the Germans, and she happened to be in it. Despite the "kidnapping" however, she gladly stuck around.
"What's the word Hutch?" Flagg asked.
"We have ourselves a new rocket program. According to Intel, or should I say Aufswade, it is called the V-5." Hogan said.
"Another Vengeance weapon. Did their last one not fail?" Laura asked.
"Why another Vengeance weapon, whose Hitler getting revenge on now?" Carter asked.
"Yes, the last one failed. I do not think he is out for revenge. If anything, he is probably going to use it on our friends across the sea." Hogan replied.
"You would think he would use his brain and march in there through Russia." Carter said.
"Why waste men when he can fly a bomb in? I guess this rocket is to substitute for that due to his bomber losses." Walter added.
"Whatever his reasoning, all I know is we need to stop it before he can try to succeed. But we need a plan." Hogan said.
"Drop a bomb on the factory." Vladimir said, as if he had been waiting to spring it on them.
"That could work, but no doubt they would build another. We also don't know the nature of what we are dealing with, just bombing it could be very bad. I will try to find out more. As you were men, and lady." With that they all departed.
"By the way, whose on supper tonight?" Hogan asked Walter.
"As far as I can recall it was Laura." he replied. Hogan immediately frowned. "Are you serious? How already?" he half uttered.
"Why not just remove her from the roster?" Walter said.
"Because... She will ask why, and I do not want to tell her." Hogan said.
"Last time I told her the truth about her cooking, she punched me in the eye. I did not know you could swell that much." Carter, who was still there added.
"Carter, you help her, maybe it will spare us some punishment." Hogan said.
"Yes Colonel." he said before leaving.
......................
Hogan spent the rest of the day trying to think up a new plan. As the evening drew in, they all gathered around the old wooden table for dinner. It was a stew that Laura had cooked up with what she could find. Despite being a great medic, her cooking was known for being terrible.
"What happened to ya hand?" Flagg asked as Carter sat down; his hand bandaged up.
"Nothing, it's not as bad as it could be." he said.
"He touched the pot and burnt it proper. After I warned him a few times." Laura added.
"It's not that bad, look..."
"We are about to eat, none of us want to see your burnt hand." Walter interrupted.
They all began to force the food down. Laura was the only one who did not notice the taste. However, as everyone ate, Hogan just sat there silent. He was thinking and they could see it.
"Ah ha, that is it!" he finally exclaimed. "I believe I have an idea on how to get what we need."
"Jawohl Herr General, I will let him know." Emma said before putting the phone down. She got up before going over to Konrad's office with a stack of papers. She knocked on the door.
"Enter." Konrad called from within. She did so.
"These came through from Gestapo HQ, Herr Kommandant. General Bulkschnider wanted you to approve them."
"Me? Approve Gestapo papers?" Konrad said, almost concerned.
"It has to do with the weapons firm, Herr Kommandant."
"Oh yes. For some reason the Führer had them sent through the Gestapo. I'll get to them just now, thank you, Miss Heinzberg."
"You're welcome Herr Kommandant." With that she left his office. As she closed the door and went to her desk, the front door opened and strode Hogan. The sight of him made Emma momentarily freeze.
"Hey sweetheart." he said.
"What are you doing back here... I...uh" her voice was a bit shaky. For all she knew he was a dangerous rebel and that their last encounter was just luck that it all went well.
"Relax, lass, I'm not here to hurt you. I'm here to speak with the Kommandant."
"I-I can't let you." she stuttered.
"Come on." he said, approaching her. "Or do I have to kiss my way through you again?"
"No, it's just he's really busy." Emma replied.
Hogan smiled. "Alright, then I'll wait." he said, casually sitting down. "How about you and I chat a bit?" Emma shrugged and carefully sat back behind the desk. "So tell me, how does a pretty little lass like you get to working a job like this?" he asked.
Emma blushed slightly. "I...uh, just finished studying and needed to find work to try to help pay it off."
"Studying, ay. What did you study?"
"Mostly hospitality related stuff."
Hogan chuckle. "I should have guessed. You are very hospitable, and I can tell you're very kind."
"What about you? Why are you doing what you're doing?" she asked.
"I was British Special Forces in Africa, part of a Commando unit. Men like me just don't know when to stop fighting."
"But the war is essentially over. Shouldn't you have been imprisoned for what you did; I mean the British were the bad guys."
Hogan shook his head. "I understand where you get that from but the Nazi's are the bad guys. I mean, Poland, France, and Yugoslavia."
"Poland attacked Germany, we were at war with France and Yugoslavia betrayed us."
"Okay, maybe you have a point. Although I heard the Poland attack was orchestrated. What about neutral Belgium, Netherlands and Luxembourg?"
"Well; we needed to get to France and... Make sure they couldn't push us back."
"Maybe understandable. Okay, what about neutral Norway and Denmark."
"Well...uh..." Emma stopped to think.
"I mean, I'm not saying anything but maybe what you were told on the news, in newspapers and posters wasn't all true."
"No, it had to be. There must be a reason..." She stopped and looked at him. "No, you're just trying to trick me, aren't you?"
Before he could reply, the door handle to Konrad's office slowly turned. Hogan stood up and backed against the wall, putting his hands up, as Konrad came out. Konrad looked over at him.
"What on earth is happening here?" he said.
"Kommandant your receptionist has a gun under that table pointing right at me." Hogan exclaimed in a fake panic. Emma looked at him confused and Konrad smiled.
"Well, Hogan, I see you learned the new consequences of trying to get in here."
"I know you've hired a Rottweiler of a woman. If she's going to finish me off, tell her to make it quick."
Konrad chuckled again. "Miss Heinzberg, shoot him in the leg and call the Gestapo would you. I'll be in my office." With that, Konrad re-entered his office, leaving the pretending Hogan and confused Emma alone.
"Great job. Just play along a bit more next time. I've got to go." Hogan half whispered. "YOU'LL NEVER TAKE ME ALIVE!" he yelled before running to the door and opening it. "See you around; Emma" he said before leaving. She just sat there very confused. After a while she decided to get back to work, but something bugged her. It was what he had said; was the Führer the actual bad one and not the leaders of the Allies? She thought he may have been tricking her or trying to. Then again, he certainly didn't act like some rebel who used such trickery; he barely actually seemed like a rebel at all. She tried to ignore the thought and got back to work, yet they still lingered for a long time.
