I Should'Ve Walked You Home (Short Story)

I should've walked you home

Akiro is a first year High school student. He is tall, handsome and smart that's why a lot of girls like him. He can be a little bit grumpy most of the time, but he isn't that bad. He might act like he doesn't care, but trust me he does.

He was just about to leave the school building with his umbrella, until he saw Shoyo at the entrance waiting for the rain to stop. He sighed and walked over to Shoyo, handing him the umbrella. "Take it, you idiot. You'll catch a cold otherwise."

"What about you?" the boy asked. "I'll be fine". Akiro pulled his hood over his head, even though he knew that was probably not going to help him in the rain. "How about we share the umbrella together?" Shoyo offered. Akiro huffed, looking down at Shoyo. "Yeah, whatever." He opened the umbrella, holding so that the both of them were under it.

As the two of them walked, Akiro was silent. He didn't have much to say to the boy. He couldn’t help glancing over at him a few times though, seeing how the boy had his arms tucked inside his own sleeves because of the cold. He sighed, pulling off his own jacket and handing it to Shoyo. "Just take the damn jacket. You look like a wet puppy with your arms tucked in your sleeves like that."

"Oh wow, I didn't know that you can be nice sometimes" he chuckled as he said that. "Just take it before I change my mind". Akiro said, a slight glare forming on his face.

Once again, he went silent and continued to walk. He was getting cold and his hands were beginning to go a bit numb. "Are you cold? I can give you back your jacket" Shoyo asked. "It’s not that cold. And keep the jacket, I still don't want you to get sick."

"Are you worried about me? You're being nice for once Akiro... Wait are you-are you going to kill me😱is that why you're being nice all of a sudden?" the boy's face became pale as he came to that conclusion. Akiro let out a scoff, a smirk forming on his face. "Infact, I was just thinking about it." He was obviously messing with the boy, but his sarcastic remark came off more as a warning due to his usual blank face. "😱😱😱"

Akiro chuckled at Shoyo's reaction, glancing over at him once again. "Jeez, calm down. I was kidding". The boy let out a sign of relief "I really thought you mean it". They continued to walk for a few more minutes when Akiro suddenly stopped. They had gotten to the place where they needed to split ways. Tsukishima took the umbrella back from Shoyo, letting it rest on his shoulder. "It's not far from here. I'm sure you can make it without me babying you".

"Ehhh??? You're not gonna take me home???" Shoyo asked. Akiro raised his eyebrow, looking down at Shoyo. "I don't have to. I've already walked you halfway through the way of your journey home. I'm sure you can make it the rest of the way without me". He said, his voice teasing. "Fine" Shoyo said. Akiro smirked as the boy said that, he about to turn away from him but he stopped. 'Should he really just leave him by himself?'. He didn't like him all that much, but the thought of leaving him in the rain alone with no umbrella didn't sit right with him. when he turned around Shoyo was already gone.

"Damn-" Akiro said, quickly turning his head around to where you were just a second ago. "Where did that idiot go"

He grumbled, now worried that Shoyo ran off in the rain without an umbrella. With that, he started walking, looking around to see if he could see his short figure running through the rain. He got more worried as he walked. 'What if he got hurt, or kidnapped, or lost- god dammit- why did he not just walk him home' he mentally cursed himself. In his head, he kicked himself for letting him leave alone. 'Maybe he were already home and he hadn't noticed'. That thought kept him a bit calm, but he still worried that he were't safe from the rain.

~The next day~

*On the tv news*

The reporter is reporting about a boy who was found dead in an alleyway with multiple stab on his body.

Akiro had the TV on in the background while he got ready for school. He wasn't paying much attention to it until he heard key words. "Boy. Found. Body. Dead."

He stopped what he was doing and walked closer to the TV. His eyes widened slightly as he caught a glimpse of the person who had died. "No... it couldn't be. Please don't- don't be-". His thoughts were cut off by hearing the Reporter speak again.

"The body has just been identified. The unfortunate young boy was a first-year high school student, Shoyo ____". Akiro froze as he heard that name, and his eyes widened more as a photo popped up on the TV screen.

"Oh no-" He muttered, his eyes glued to the screen. "Oh no, no, no-" His worry skyrocketed and he stared at the news in disbelief. 'Just yesterday, he was talking with him and had walked him halfway home. How could this happen?'

Suddenly the memories of the previous day came back like a tidal wave, and he thought of the 'what if he had walked him home. Maybe if he hadn't let him go alone, he'd still be alive'. That thought made Akiro's mind go blank. "No. No. No.". 'He should've just walked him home. Everything would've been fine if he hadn't let him go alone'.

He just sat there in silence. Thinking of his decisions from the day before. Blaming himself entirely for letting the boy walk alone, and getting stabbed in an alleyway.

'He should've just walked him home. he'd be alive right now. he would've been fine if he had just walked him home'. The thought of Shoyo's death replayed in his mind over and over, like a broken record. He couldn't help feeling responsible for the death. He had never felt so much overwhelming guilt in his life.

He blamed himself for letting him go alone. 'If he had just not let him go, he would've been fine. he'd be alive. he would've been safe and warm'. It felt like he had been stabbed himself, and he just wanted to curl up and just cry.

It went silent in the room, as Akiro just sat on the couch. He was at a loss on what to do. The guilt he felt consumed the entire rest of his day, eating at him.

"I should've walked you home".
