Anaya was snoozing like a baby, wrapped in her blanket like a burrito, when her phone suddenly sprang to life, shattering the peaceful silence. She groggily pulled out a hand, still half-asleep, and slapped the disconnect button without even bothering to open her eyes. After all, whoever was calling could wait - sleep was a priority!
But the caller was relentless. The phone rang again. And again. And again. Each time, Anaya's hand would emerge from the blanket like a zombie, slap the disconnect button, and then retreat back into the cozy warmth. This ridiculous game of phone-tag continued for five rounds, with Anaya getting progressively more annoyed (and still not opening her eyes).
But finally, on the sixth ring, something inside Anaya snapped. She pulled her face out of the blanket, still keeping her eyes firmly shut, and growled into the phone...
"Kaun mar gaya subha subha?"
("Who died early in the morning?")
A voice came from the other side of the phone...
"Manhus... Subha subha marne ki bat kaun karta hai"
("What's with the talk of dying early in the morning?")
Anaya's eyes remained shut, but a hint of a smile played on her lips as she recognized the voice.
"Oh, to ye tu hai... Bol kutte subha subha disturb kyu kiya"
("Oh, it's you... Why did you disturb me early in the morning Dog?")
She understood from the voice that it was Shivay on the other side of the call.
"Guess kar mai kahan hu"
("Guess where I am.")
Shivay's excitement was palpable, even over the phone.
"Dustbin me hoga aur kahan... Wahi to tera ghar hai na"
("You must be in the dustbin... Isn't that your home?")
Anaya's careless remark was met with mock anger from Shivay.
"Uff sahi se puch na ki mai kahan hu"
("Ask me properly where I am.")
Anaya's eyes finally fluttered open, and she sat up in bed, intrigued.
"Accha accha bol kahan hai"
("Okay, okay, tell me where you are.")
"Delhiiiii!" Shivay shouted on the other side of the phone.
Anaya's eyes widened in shock and excitement.
"Sach?"
("Really?")
"Han bandariya han"
("Yes, monkey, yes.")
Anaya's face lit up with a bright smile.
"Aur tum sabko ek important bat batani hai jaldi ready ho ja mai tujhe lene aa raha hu"
("And I have to tell you all something important, so get ready quickly, I'm coming to pick you up.")
Anaya's excitement turned into anticipation.
"Okie bas 30 min me ready joke ayi"
("Okay, I'll be ready in 30 minutes, no jokes.")
Anaya ran to the washroom and freshened up - aka, she splashed some water on her face and hoped for the best. A bath later, she emerged feeling like a brand new person (or at least, a person who'd had a decent night's sleep).
She wrestled her way into a white salwar suit, because, let's be real, getting dressed in the morning is basically a workout. A quick swipe of kajal and a bindi, and she was ready to take on the world (or at least, the day). Grabbing her purse and phone, she burst out of her room with all the excitement of meeting her BFF after a long time.
As Anaya descended the stairs, her voice echoed through the house, "Maaaaaaaaaaaaaa, Maaaaaaaaaaaaa, Babaaaaaaaaaaa, Maaaaaaaaa!"
("Mother, Mother, Father, Mother!")
Aradhya Saxena, Anaya's mother, looked up from the dining table, a hint of amusement on her face. "Kya hua? Bakri ki tarah Maaa, Maaa kyu kar rahi ho?"
("What's wrong? Why are you shouting 'Mother' like a goat?")
Anaya stopped mid-sentence, her eyes fixed on the dining table where Shivay was savoring alu ke paratha with utmost calmness. Her mother sat across from him, a warm smile on her face.
"Tu yahan kab aya? Aur bhukkad ki tarah khana bhi thus raha hai..."
("When did you arrive? And you're eating like a glutton...")
Anaya's voice was laced with mock anger and surprise. Shivay looked up, a hint of a smile playing on his lips.
Aradhya Saxena chimed in, feigning annoyance, "Ohh chup ho ja Anu aur khane de mere bacche ko."
("Oh, be quiet, Anu, and let my child eat.")
Anaya strolled over to her father, Vedant Saxena, and exclaimed, "Dekho na baba ye ate hi maa mujhe bhul gayi."
("Look, Dad, Mom forgot about me the moment he arrived.")
Vedant Saxena chuckled, his eyes twinkling with mirth. "Ab mai kya bolu... Ye yo ate hi meri biwi ko bhi le liya."
("What can I say... He's taken over my wife's attention the moment he arrived.")
Shivay snickered, "Are Aunty kahin se jalne ki khusboo aa rahi hai, sayad koi jal raha hai."
("I think I smell someone burning, Aunty.")
Anaya shot back, "Kutte..." ("You..dog..."), but her retort was cut short by the ringing of her phone.
"Main ye call attend karke aati hoon,"
("I'll attend this call and come back,") Anaya said, as she stepped out of the house. The moment she crossed the threshold, her demeanor transformed dramatically. Her face, which had been radiant with warmth and laughter just moments before, now turned cold and icy. Her sparkling eyes lost their luster, and her gaze became as frigid as ice.
Anaya picked up the call, her voice devoid of emotion as she listened to the person on the other end. She responded with a curt "ok" before ending the call.
Just as she turned to head back inside, she heard Shivay's voice calling out to her from a distance. "Anu!" The sound of his voice was like a switch, instantly transforming her facial expressions from cold to soft and cute.
"Anu chal, ab der ho rahi hai,"
("Anu, come on, it's getting late,") Shivay said, as he walked towards her.
Anaya playfully mocked him, "Han, ab tera to thusna ho gaya, ab to jane ko hi bolega."
("Yes, now that you've eaten, you're ready to leave, right?")
Aradhya Saxena intervened, "Anu, mere bacche ko kuch mat bol, khane ko lekar aur time se ghar chali ana."
("Anu, don't scold my child, and make sure to eat and return home on time.")
Anaya responded with a dramatic sigh, "Huhh... Okhhh." ("Okay, fine...")
With that, Anaya and Shivay bid farewell to the Saxena family and set off, leaving the warmth and laughter of the mansion behind.
