(Elijah's POV)
I felt someone kissing my lips gently. I groaned as a response, and lightly pushed the face that was close to mine. "Love, wake up, it's already morning." Cain said, and continued trailing soft kisses on my face.
I slowly opened my eyes and saw my husband’s dashing figure. He had on a sweet smile, so I gave him a quick peck on the nose as a way to say 'good morning'.
We were still having our moment, but the door suddenly opened, and our little angel barged in with a curious look.
"Mom, did daddy bully you again?" He asked, but I didn't get enough time to talk, "Don't worry momma, I'll avenge you!" He shouted the last words with a serious face and ran in our direction. He jumped directly on top of the bed, and crawled towards where Cain was.
I just chuckled at my baby’s cute antics, and Cain just cupped his face when he got close, and gave our son a smooch on the cheek.
He was trying to push Cain's face away, wanting to get out of his hold. And I just laughed at the scene before me.
My life is great. I have a complete and loving family. A caring and affectionate husband, and a son who's extremely sweet.
They were all I have.
"Hey, are you okay?" I heard Elijah ask, and I just nodded and smiled at him.
I brushed my baby's hair, while Cain was giving him kisses all over his tummy.
We adopted Alex 5 years ago. We didn't actually plan it. Cain told me that when he was on his way home, he saw a pregnant woman struggling on the side of the road calling for help. It was midnight, and only a few people actually went out at that time of the night. He didn't have the heart to just leave her suffering there, so he took her to the hospital.
When they arrived the woman was immediately taken to the labor room. She gave birth to a boy, but sadly, the woman didn't make it. And we soon found out that she was without a family. So we decided to raise the baby as our own, and it was the greatest decision we've ever made.
Alex completed us.
I was suddenly pulled out of my thoughts when I felt someone tugging my cheeks.
Alex was looking at me with a questioning look.
"Mama, why are you smiling like that? It's creepy, stop doing it!" He scolded me, and I just chuckled at what he said, and gave his temple a kiss.
I looked at the clock and saw that it was almost 7:30.
"OK let's get ready, we're going to be late you two." I said to them, and Cain immediately took Alex from my embrace, and carried him to the bathroom, while I went downstairs and prepared breakfast for my two boys.
I cooked some pancakes and bacon, which was Alex's favourite breakfast, and also made waffles for Cain and I.
I knew that they were already finished since I heard a lot of ruckus upstairs.
"Guys, the food is ready!" I shouted, "Ok love, just a minute!" Cain answered. So I started preparing the table and went back to the kitchen to brew some coffee, and made milk for Alex.
When I was done, I went back to the dining room and already saw both of them eating.
"Love, I'll probably arrive home past eleven. The team and I are going to finish the proposal for the Lysander corp. Is it okay for you to fetch Alex after school?"
"Of course, don't worry, just make sure to text me if there are any changes." I replied. He just made a thumbs up sign and continued eating.
I gave him his coffee and focused my attention on my son. He was trying to draw a happy face using the chocolate syrup. I ruffled his head and told him to eat fast, or he'll be late for school.
But of course, instead of listening to me, he did the opposite of what I said. I just sighed and decided to feed him myself. Cain had already finished his food and went upstairs to change into his suit. By the time he came downstairs, Alex was also done. And we hurriedly went outside and walked towards Cain’s car.
Before they entered, Cain turned towards me and gave me a side hug, "Elijah, don't forget to call me if something's up, okay love?" he leaned to me and our foreheads touched.
"Promise. Now get inside, you'll be late!" He nodded, and I kissed my little angel goodbye, and gave Cain a peck on the lips.
I waved at them as they entered the car, and they quickly drove off.
Alex opened the window and swayed his small hands at me. I stood there and motioned my right hand, sending him a flying kiss.
I went back inside shortly after, when their car was totally out of sight.
Now, I was all alone in our home,
I figured that I should clean the house first before having a bath.
I started cleaning the kitchen first, then the backyard. I was sweeping the leaves on the grass when I suddenly saw a car parking in front of the empty house across from ours.
'Must be the new neighbours.'
After I finished cleaning, I quickly went upstairs, to the bathroom, and soaked myself in the tub. I let the water envelope my body, and it was so relaxing.
__
*ding-dong\,* the ringing of the doorbell suddenly woke me up.
I must have soaked for hours, since my body was a bit stiff when I stirred awake.
I hurriedly put on a robe and went downstairs.
I approached the door slowly and peeked through the hole. I couldn't see the person's face, but it seemed to be a man.
I gently opened it, and sure enough, I was right, it was indeed an old man. I looked at his face and he was smiling at me. I suddenly felt something different when I saw his face.
The old man was probably in his sixties, but his good features couldn't be denied. He's probably handsome back in his youth.
Don't get me wrong, I don't sway that way.
It's just, I feel like I saw this man before. But where?
“Who are you?”
"Ohh, you must have already forgotten me, little champ. I completely understand, it's been years since the last time we've met." He said in a warm tone, but I still couldn't recall who he was.
"Umm, who are you exactly?" I asked him politely, he seemed to be a good man, but something was odd about him.
"Oh sorry, I'm Akihiro Astor, your grandad's best friend. You and I met when you were still a kid, if I remember correctly, you must have been around three at that time." He spoke, as if the memories were clearly etched on his mind.
Well, what he said might actually be true. Dad and grandpa had a fall-out when I was just a kid. It was right after Nana died. He didn't allow me to see him after their argument, and we never visited since then. I tried to visit him once, but the people said that he wasn't living there any more. So I lost track of him.
"Oh, okay. Come in, it's cold outside." I invited the old man, and led him to the living room.
He wasn't really completely old looking, although his hair was white but his skin was not loose nor was his posture bad.
"So, what brought you here, ummm…" I wasn't sure how to address him.
"You can call me Hiro, or uncle if you like, just like before." He told me while smiling.
He immediately started talking the moment we sat on the couch.
"Elijah, I'm not here to disturb your life. I just want you to know that your grandfather passed away a little over a month ago. His lawyer suddenly came to my house, and he said that your grandfather wants me to personally give this box to you. As for the reason, I don't know. I never heard of him, until two days ago." He said, and I could clearly sense that his voice was laced with sadness.
"Oh..." I desperately tried to lift the mood, but I obviously failed.
"No, it's okay, you don't have to dwell on it. I'm just here to give this box to you, he wanted you to have it."
I wonder where grandad was all these years... I saw the box he was holding, and it wasn't really modern looking. I mean, it looked nice, but the design was quite old.
"Do you have any idea what's inside?" I asked him, as he passed me the box. And I traced my fingers on top of it. I looked at him, but he shook his head, telling me he didn't know. I turned my head down and carefully opened it.
Immediately the date written in an old paper caught my eye.
'January 10, 1961'
"1961" I read the year in a low voice.
I don't know why, but I started to feel uneasy.
I looked inside the box and saw two silver rings.
"Do you perhaps know who owned this?" I asked the old uncle, but he was just staring at the rings in my hand. Out of nowhere, he talked, "Child, they say that memories are much easier to remember when they are old,"
"Excuse me?"
"If you have a chance to remember every detail of your past, would you take it?" he asked me while letting out a deep breath, and slowly closed his eyes.
"Of course, it would be nice, I guess?" I replied to him, and he opened his eyes, and looked at me with a somber smile.
"Even the bad ones?"
