He hid behind the musty bushes, trying to catch his breath without making much noise as possible, and avoid attracting attention. He heard the rapid footsteps, that previously tailed him, get past him, followed by silence that lasted for a minute or two. The sun was setting, causing a shade of teal orange to run across more than half of the sky.
His phone buzzed. "Rhi " he said, "where are you?" looking back and forth from his place. There was no one around the park, and he'd probably lost his pursuers. A static voice rang through the phone he was holding.
"Rhi? "
The boy stiffened in disbelief. He had lost another friend, again. He quickly cut off the line and smashed the phone on the ground. There was no time to waste on agony at this point. Selfish it may sound but he was no hero.
He sprinted off to the nearest safe place that would be available for him to sleep for the night— the Yore neighborhood. It wasn't far off but nor wasn't close enough. He'd be caught in a risk if he were to rush there unguarded. He mentally counted the amount of weapons he had— 2 flash grenade, a small gun and a rope.
The chances of escaping alive is slim when directly confronted with an unworldly being. But he didn't want to be simply stuck in a place with no trace of help. He had scarcely tasted food in almost 2 days so he also had to worry about restocking food.
He exited the park and stepped into the dark alleyway across the street. He climbed the fire exit of one of the run down, yet high enough, building to make out his way through the alley.
He stepped down the fire exit carefully, after mentally picturing the route. Jogging his way around the dark and gloomy he kept hoping he wouldn't run into them. It's been three days since the so called downfall of humanity.
The brunette refused to believe that there were no longer humans alive. Even if there were, he wasn't sure for how long they could survive this calamity. Hell, he didn't even know for how long he'd survive in those ruins.
Yet he wouldn't give up. Not yet. Not until he found out what he wanted.
A sudden growl alerted him and he halted in his steps. He looked about him frantically and there it was. Yellow glow of what seemed to be the shape of eyes that glared at him.
He cursed. Quickly running off in the opposite direction and taking a turn to the right. The creature shook the ground with its movements, destroying walls of the crammed alley with its large wings, creating a scene.
He worried that now the alley would be exposed to the other creatures he had so despised. The alley was no longer a safe route and the boy decided to escape. He fished out a flash grenade and pulling the pin, threw it towards the giant creature.
In an instant, the grenade flashed a bright light, causing the creature to scream and howl. Using it as distraction, the boy swiftly took off.
However the distraction was shortlived. The creature, as if coming to its senses, roared at the boy and started off in his direction. The boy was on the verge of having his head bitten off his body.
In a flash, a sword swung, right by him, and slashed the head of the giant, dragon-like creature in half. A silhouette stood on top the dead creature's body. A brief shower of purple liquid, what supposedly seemed to be the blood of the creature, rained upon them.
"no way" the boy whispered, "a vampire". He did not opt to run because he knew the vampire's speed was unrivaled. "what a drag" they said disgusted with the stain of blood that ruined their clothes—a white colored suit.
The vampire stepped on the ground and stood facing the boy. They was rather tall, taller than the brunette. "My my" they began, "can't believe a day like this has come where I have to save a worthless human " they looked down at the brunette, "now then, let's get you somewhere fitting of your position"
They stretched their hand to grab the boy's wrist. The latter harshly pushed it away, "don't touch me you other worldly creature" the brunette glared at the vampire with hostility. He knew better than anyone that he hasn't the tiniest chance of surviving, so why not put up a fight while he could?
Bewildered, the other just stared at the brunette. "I— other worldly creature excuse me?! " They snapped, now seeming a bit more irritated than before, "just because vampires don't often appear on the face of the earth doesn't mean we don't exist" they scowled, "we're divine beings, bound to eternity to this earth and its protection and just because some measly humans are so oblivious to our existence doesn't mean we'd take the `other worldly creature` accusation".
Silence reigned between them. The brunette was absorbing everything he got told. His thoughts swirled in utter confusion. He eventually snapped out of it when the vampire cleared his throat. "I apologize for my rude way of speaking" they said, changing their persona that deemed fit for someone with noble origin.
They bowed their head, "let me give you a formal introduction of myself" they said, " Fritzgald Béchalot , the fourth in throne to the noble line of vampires"
"pleased to meet you" they now stood straight, urging the brunette to introduce himself.
"Ai " he spoke, returning the gesture of formality.
"well my good sir" the other spoke, still in his noble-like character, "if you would be so kind as to depart for Kyuketsu —the homeland of all vampires and refugium for surviving humans— with me"
