I'm Judy Brooks. A plain and boring name for a plain and boring woman. I am officially 25 years old this year and everyday just feels like another step closer to the end of the walking plank. I work night to night as work is crazy hectic. I don't even remember the last time I saw the sun. It's just overtime everyday along with energy drinks to keep me alive and working at the least.
I walked down the streets as I yawned miserably. Ahh~ tomorrow surely will be the same. I'd rather die than work another day in my life. The only thing that keeps me excited and willing to live another day is this novel that I hold dear.
This novel which was given to me by my late mother was a book bound by worn light purple leather, with wordings lettered in light gold. It wasn't a fancy book or anything but I had always loved the story as it was a means for me to escape reality when work got too busy.
As I grinned at the book I held in my hand, I opened it only to hear someone yelling at me to move out of the way. The last thing I remembered was a car's headlights flashing in my eyes along with the blaring of horns from a tanker. It was too late and before I knew it, the world when black.
"How long are you going to lay there?" a voice asked as I opened my eyes. "Hnnn... my book... MY BOOK!!!" I yelled as I started searching frantically for the book which was my last memento of my mother.
As my fingers brushed upon the familiar worn cover of the book, I sighed a breath of relief as I finally turned towards the source of the voice. Clutching my book tightly, I gazed upwards.
My voice got caught in my throat as a man in pure white who gave out an ephemeral glow stood in front of me. He had eyes as bright as sapphire and hair as radiant as snow that reflected the sun. His expression however, wasn't one of delight.
"Are you just going to sit there? Look at what you did. How are you planning to solve this?" the man questioned me as he pointed me towards the wreckage. A yellow car was smashed against a lamp post while another white car had turned turtle, behind that car a tanker had overturned as well causing the area to be empty of passerby willing to help. The petrol the tanker was carrying leaked out onto the road as it spread across the scene.
It'd make sense that nobody was willing to go there to help as that would also put them at risk if the petrol were to catch fire. As I approached the yellow car, the sound of a motorcycle echoed in my ear as I watched the man on the motorcycle lose control of it and crashed right in the middle of the road, causing his bike to get caught on fire.
The whole scene was basically a gruesome one as the people in the car bled out or burned alive from the fire. I tried opening the door of the yellow car to help the person inside but the handle wouldn't budge. "H-HELP ME!" I yelled at the man in white but he looked at me solemnly. "You should stop. I can't help them as it is already their time. However... you made it come quicker." he said as I looked at him confused.
"What do you mean?! Are you also going to let them die?! Just help me open the car door! It's going to catch on fire!" I yelled. Still, the man stood there as he pointed at something. As I looked at the place he pointed at, my eyes bulged and I felt my stomach growing queasy.
I saw myself lying in a grotesque mess underneath the tires of the car, with a single teardrop rolling down my face as my eyes reflected the fire growing before it. "Wh-what? M-m-me?" I stammered as I fell on to the road. "That's why I said you couldn't do anything. In fact. I'd be so bold as to say it was your fault." the man said.
"H-huh?! How can this be my fault? I'm dead! I mean my... body is there... and how could I have possibly done this?!" I yelled, with tears dripping down my face. My life was already miserable enough but I died just as miserably?!
"You weren't supposed to be here today. And because of that, you set of a chain reaction. Your ability to attract misfortune was already high but coming here today when the driver of that white car was here amplified it. Hence, this accident." the man said as if it were a matter of fact. "D-don't be ridiculous! I'm already dead and you're accusing me of killing them as well just by being here? As if getting run over by a car wasn't enough! My whole life was already miserable! How much worse can it get?!" I yelled as I gritted my teeth and clenched my fist just as hard to hold in the anger.
"... I see... Well... nothing much to do here as their lives were already short, so I suppose your punishment wouldn't be as harsh." the man said again as he opened up the notepad he had been holding onto for a while. "What? Punishment?! Why should I... As a matter of fact, who are you?! How would you know any of this is caused by me anyways?" I yelled at the man as I glared at him.
"Who? Me? I'm God." the man said with his matter of fact serious face. "Hah? You... Got... TO BE KIDDING ME!!!" I yelled again.
"... Well that's a first." the man said... oh wait. I meant God said. "What is? Me calling out your terrible attitude?" I asked sarcastically. "Well... I suppose there's that but... The book you're holding. It's something I gave your great grandmother. I'm surprised your family still held onto it." God said as he stared at my novel giving me a 'Let me take a look at it' kinda look.
I huffed and hid the book behind my back as I glared at him. "Hah. As if. This book was given to me by my mom. Plus. How would you have given it to my great grandma if you are 'God'?" I asked sarcastically with a smug grin. "I could send you to hell just for that blasphemy but out of the kindness of my heart and as a friend of your great grandmother, I'll let it go. As for your question..." God said as his words drifted off.
"I met your great grandmother while I was on Earth, I just wanted to check out your lifestyles. It was different than it was in heaven. I can't quite remember the timeline but... your great grandmother had a gift. A strong spiritual gift and a loving heart. She could sense and see me unlike all the other people. Faith during those days were low so I was surprised she was a strong believer.... Unlike you... she believed me when I told her I was God. She was so touched and revered me. I preferred when we were friends but I couldn't change that anymore. So as a farewell gift, I gifted her that book. It was based on a story we came up with together. She really loved romance stories as well." God said as he smiled softly.
He then looked at me with his sharp gaze as he grinned mischievously. "Hence. I'll send you to that world as a punishment. I've blessed you with some gifts so do help the people there. That, is how I want YOU to repent." God said as the world suddenly grew into a blinding white.
As I came to, I felt my head throbbing with a dull pain. I groaned as I tried to climb out of bed, only to trip and fall onto the floor face first. "Ouch! What the heck! Why is this blan-... huh?" screamed a high pitched voice. I turned towards my bed only to find my usually dark room with a single sized bed with plain bed sheets to be a King sized bed with a canopy, covered with a silk duvet and bed sheets. I looked around the room confused and found it to be decorated in a medieval fashion design and searched for a familiar sight, only to give up in the end until I spotted a mirror across the room.
I sprinted towards it but fell again. "Ugh! Why the heck do I keep falling?!" I muttered impatiently as I pushed myself up, only noticing something off about my hands. They weren't my rough, dry hands that typed all day in the office on my keyboard. It was a small chubby hand of a kid. If I were to make a rough estimate, a child around 5 to 6 years old. But how...?
A flashback of what 'God' said to me crossed my mind. "I'll send you to that world as a punishment." God said as his words echoed in my head. I sat in silence for a moment as I pondered his sentence. "Well... I guess being reborn as the heroine is no biggie. Hahah. At least my life here would be easy sailing." I grinned before I heard thunderous footsteps charging towards my room.
"Young Miss! Young Miss Lily! Are you alright?!" the sound of a woman's voice echoed from the hallway in a ragged manner as she called out to me. Huh... Wait... Isn't the heroine called Delia? Wait... it can't be... Seriously?! I thought as I rushed towards the mirror.
In front of the mirror stood a young girl with shoulder length wavy brownish orange hair and a pair of beautiful emerald green eyes. ... There's no mistaking it... I'm... the villainous... Seriously? My punishment is THIS?! In a rage of fit I screamed, at the top of my voice as I felt the hot tears stream down my face. Pairs of concerned hands wrapped around my body in an attempt to comfort me as I noticed out of the corner of my eyes the maids and butlers frantically running about trying to stop me from crying and screaming. Well... maybe more on the screaming part.
"Have you finally calmed down Young Miss?" a maid I recognised as the villainous' nanny asked as she smiled tenderly at me. I held my breath and nodded my head, not wanting to worry her. I mean... in the story, the nanny never left Lily's side even when Lily was finally publically executed. Pretty extreme measure if you ask me.
"I... I had a bad dream..." I said, trying to play it off as me having a bad dream. After all, who can accept the fact that they were suddenly thrown into a world of fantasy? Not to mention, this villainous girl's life is also pretty tragic. Aahhhhh!!!! Why does my life suck?! In my past life and even in this life!!!
"I see... Young Miss... if you don't mind, why don't I read you a story as you go back to bed? I'll even prepare your warm milk, including the honey." the nanny asked as she smiled softly. I pondered it for a second before rubbing the tear from my eye off with the back of my finger as I smiled and nodded an affirmation. "Okay!" I said as I broke out into a grin.
I... wonder if that was alright... The way I acted as a kid... I'm not too sure because I have no idea how kids are supposed to act. I can't even remember my childhood, I thought in a panic as I sat in bed brooding.
As my nanny read me a fairytale, I drifted off to bed, with images of the gruesome car accident and of 'God's' final message before sending me here. Ugh. Since it's come to this... I'll change my fate!
The story I've transmigrated into is one where the female protagonist meets a group of men who saved her from trouble when she was out shopping. Those men turned out to be the crown prince and his retainers. Taken by the protagonist's beauty and well manners, the crown prince and his retainers slowly fell in love with her, leaving the prince's fiancee Lily Lacroix enraged and betrayed by his actions and causes a ripple effect making her bully the protagonist. I say bully but it never got physical. I would say the villainous didn't like getting her hands dirty so she always picks a fight with the protagonist, leading to her downfall. A pretty gruesome one whereas the protagonist marries the prince and lives happily ever after.
To tell you the truth, thinking about it now, the protagonist, Delia, actually sounds like a pretty shady character... but I don't know. She also sounds pretty weak mentally if she could get that hurt from a little berating. I'd say the villainous was a much stronger person which was why her ending was a pretty depressing one.
Not to mention, the villainous, me, had a rough upbringing as her mother dies of a strange illness while her father became very depressed and resorted to lashing out at Lily as a means of escape, and finally dies in an accident as he was returning from his meeting with a business partner. Lily's world grew darker as the people she loved disappeared one by one. She never hated her father even when he beat her, but instead emphatized with him as he lost his beloved wife while she lost her father. Lily also didn't want her brother to grow up hating his father so she made sure he wouldn't get hurt as she held up her ground as the eldest in their household, taking the beatings in his stead.
The wounds on her heart grew larger as she found out her father died and that her brother, riddled with his guilt grew even more distant once he became the head of the family. Lily's only happiness was the time spent with her fiance, the crown prince, Alexander Blaiyth, only for him to be taken from her as well by the protagonist. It's no surprise she hated the protagonist so much to the point of ridiculing her publicly, only to end in a more tragic way. The irony of someone who loved only to be killed by the one they loved. If seen through her perspective, Lily is a truly pitiful character.
