The gray clouds in the sky start to scatter, letting the sunshines out. Somewhere, in the middle of a forest, situated in the little Kingdom called Crocus, there's a boy around his seventeen lying in the ground with his two hands crossed behind his head.
After the storm last night, a few droplets of water still hung amid the grass, damping the boy dirty and worn out clothes. His golden eyes are stuck on the sky above him. The fresh breeze is swaying his wavy and messy blond hair. His fair skin is covered with dust.
His stomach rumbles, he sighs, " I'm hungry. . ."
He stands up and walks nonchalantly toward the half ruined wooden house, with his crossed hand still behind his head.
He enters. Moss's growing in the walls. The wet woods give off a musty smell. There's a pot in the corner of the house. Inside it, There's still some mashed sweet potatoes he cooked last night. He's about to reheat it but then he noticed the firewoods are wet as well. Cannot light the fire, he pours the sweet potatoes in a bowl. He side sits on the ground and starts eating.
As far as he can remember, he's been living alone. He doesn't have any family or friends. When he was a child, no one cuddled him when he cried from fearing the dark. No one was there to take care of him when he was sick.
But not even once Kaya thought of trying to find his parents. For him, if they're still alive, they abandoned him so why would he bother himself finding people who don't even like him?
He only want to survive. As he grows up, he even started to forget his own name. When he reaches twelve years old he named himself Kaya* in the hope of having a better life.
( A/N: Kaya means rich in indonesian language )
Kaya puts the empty bowl on the ground, 'Let's work now '
Using his shirt sleeve, he wipes his mouth then leaves.
As he keeps walking, he starts to hear footsteps and chatters. He's no longer surrounded by trees. In his bare feet, he walks in the street, avoiding the bunches of people.
He looks at the beautiful houses in the sides of the street, he can't help to hope, 'One Day, I'll live in a house like that! '
Kaya bumps into someone. Without waisting time, he apologies, " I'm sorr___"
[ SPLASH ]
He falls into a puddle. The man he bumped to pushed him. Some people stopped by to see what's going on.
Furious, the man yells, " Watch where are you walking, you cockroach!!! "
Kaya keeps his head down, " I'm sorry, sir! "
The man clenched his teeth-, wipes his navy blue suit, still complaining that Kaya ruined his cloths.
Once the man gone, the people who were watching continue their walks as if nothing happen.
Kaya is still in the ground. His pant is soaked, " . . . "
He opens his clenched fist. There's a small coin purse he's holding in the palm of his hand. He discretly opens it.
His eyes widen as he looks inside it, 'Three gold coins!? '
He grins, 'That man has a lot on his pocket . . . No wonder he seemed so full of himself!'
He stands up, and then walks before him with a smile, thinking that everything went well. What Kaya doesn't know is that there's someone who's watching him from a balcony.
It's a man around his fifty. He's bald and his skin is lightly tanned. His narrow brown eyes are following Kaya who disappears in the crowd. Using his index and middle finger, he takes off the cigarette he's been holding in his mouth.
He puffs out the cigarette smoke, " He'll be great "
With the three gold coins in his pocket, he decided to come back home. He wanted to buy some foods though. But it's not like he can go to a backery nearby to buy some breads, using gold coins. It'll be like throwing himself into the lion's mouth. There's no way that a person like him would have a gold coin unless he stole it.
Kaya clearly doesn't want to end up with the hands cut off. He has to exchange his moneys into bronzes coins.
He sees some agitation from afar.
A little boy is running fastly towards him with his head bowed. He's holding in his hand a red lady's bag.
" Please stop that kid!! He stole my bag!! " A woman in the crowd yells.
The voice seems to come far away so he has all of his chance to not get caught but unfortunately, the little boy slips on a banana peel and falls in the ground . . . right before Kaya.
He looks at the boy who's trembling from fear before him. The poor kid is afraid of getting up.
" Hey, get up quickly or else they'll catch you" Kaya murmurs to him.
The boy still doesn't move.
" Get up !" Kaya repeats, louder this time. Only then the little kid hurries himself and runs again.
" Please stop him! " The woman yells once again.
Some people stop. Their expressions clearly show what they thinks: 'What's happening?'.
Kaya's just standing there, imitating them.
After a few moments, the woman who was robbed appears but too late. The boy is already gone.
The woman sighs, " What a bad day! "
She looks in the direction where she thinks the boy goes then she noticed the blond haired young man standing before her. Seeing his face, she can't help to be surprised.
Kaya feels the woman gaze on him, 'Why is she looking at me ? Did she see me talking to little boy?'
Instinctively, Kaya looks back at her then immediately looks away. ' I have to leave before she could say anything '
He was able to leave without problems.
' What a strange woman! ' Kaya thinks.
" Hey, Kid ! " A deep voice calls.
Kaya continue to walk.
" Hey, Blondie! "
Kaya looks behind him. He sees an unfamiliar face. It's big man having tattoos all over his arms. He has a fierce look. . .
Kaya immediately looks away and speed up his steps. Even a foul will know that this man is dangerous.
The man keeps chassing after him. Going left, Kaya leaves the crowd. He starts to run.
But he faces a dead end, he growls " Tsk, Damn luck! "
He turns behind, the man is already there. Kaya clinches his hand into a fist and put them before his nose, ready to fight.
The man reassures, " Relax, I'm not here to fight with you! "
Kaya opens his mouth and asks coldly " Who are you ? "
" You don't need to know me! I'm just here to take you see my chef. For some reason, he's interested in you! "
'No matter who his chef is, I'm sure that it's a man I shouldn't get involved with '
Kaya looks carefully at him, He grins, " He, you said? I'm sorry but I'm not into man "
The man forced a smile, " What a comedian! He's really a generous person you know, you won't return home empty-handed. "
" I refuse! "
Three another men appeared. Judging by their muscles, they are all pretty strong.
Kaya sighs and then says with a big fake smile, " Alright, I'll follow you! "
" Good boy! "
Kaya's in a dark house. He can barely see things. With the four men encircling, there's no chance for him to escape.
Suddenly, the men before him stops walking. They knocks at the door, "Chief! He's here!"
Without waiting for response, they open the door. Then push Kaya and order him, " Enter! "
Once Kaya inside the room, they clapped the door after him.
Kaya looks around him. The place is messy, it's smelling cigarette and alcohol.
" Welcome! "
A bald man appears from the dark. He's hands are crossed behind his back. He walk calmly toward the table. He pours wine on the glass and proposes to Kaya, "Want to drink?"
Kaya shakes his head.
Once he refused, the man immediately drinks it.
" So? Why did your men take me here? " Kaya asks impatiently.
" Well, I'm interested in you. "
Kaya's face frowns with disgust, " The hell!? "
Seeing the boy expression, the man adds, "Not in the way you think! I'm rather interested in your ability. "
" . . . "
" Being able to steal with such facility, and discretion. . . It's really impressive! "
Kaya just listens to him silently. He's wondering about what this man's driving at.
" What's your name? "
He hesitates, " . . . Kaya! "
The man burst into laugh after hearing his name, "Hahahaha!. . . Well, what great name you have! What if. . . I give you a chance to worth your name? "
' A chance to worth my name?'
The man gets straight to the point, " Work for me!. . . I really need someone like you in my team! You'll be well payed for it, of course. . ."
" What kind of work? "
" Deliver some merchandises! "
Kaya doesn't need to think hard to guess what kind of merchandises he meant.
Kaya, " Can I have time to think about it? "
" Of course, let me know your answer after two days! "
Before Kaya opens the door and leaves. Outside, The sun is already high in the sky. Kaya didn't come back home. He thinks that those men let him go to easily. It'll be a problem for him if they know where he lives. Actually, He doesn't want to accept that blad man's offer. It's too much risk. If he get caught, he'll be literally burn alive.
Kaya steas an apple from the stall and walks away. The merchant didn't notice it.
Kaya takes a bite then chews it, " sour! "
' Liar!' Kaya thinks as he recalls what was written on the apples' merchant stall, 'sweet and juicy apples, my butt. . .'
The sun finally sat.
He goes to exchange one of his gold coin. He's purse is now full of bronze coins. He's happy just by seeing it.
[ Grrrrrr] His stomach rumbles. Kaya's starving, he skipped lunch today.
He sees a street vendent not far away from him. He's selling beef skewers. There's no guarantee that it's really beefs but he still buys some.
Full, he takes a sit on the sidewalk and falls asleep there.
He wakes up because of the footsteps and chatters of the people in the street. It's already the morning. He yawns then stands up.
" Mommy, I want this dolls! " A little girl cries to her mom while pointing the doll in the stall.
Her mom, " Not today, sweety! "
" Mommy, I want this! I want this! I want this! " The girl yells.
Her mom gives up, " Alright, alright! "
Kaya looks at the girl walking away with the doll, holding her mother's hand.
Kaya can't help to feel envious. She reminds him he didn't have the chance to throw a tantrum over a toy.
He smiles as to mock of himself, 'My childhood was indeed miserable. . .'
