The Silent Hero

Starting Off

My name is Chris Avilon, I am just another one of those gifted persons that were born in this world.

Since hundreds of years ago, demons had begun their invasion on earth. Many people had suffered the consequences of their invasion.

I was one them.

My family was killed when the demons attacked our village. I was able to escape when a group of adventurers came by.

Ever since then, I had been training my whole life to get stronger. I wanted to get revenge. But naturally as a girl, I couldn't do much.

I never gave up, I kept training and training and training until the my limits. Eventually, I became an adventurer.

It has already been a month since I became an adventurer. I spent my days doing quests to earn enough pocket money to take care of my daily life.

"That will be 500 Bytes." Said the waitress as she handed me the bill.

I searched through my purse to find the money and handed her a note of 500 Bytes.

"Thank you coming~"

I exited the restaurant in despair.

"Only 300 left..." I said as I looked into my purse.

The money I earn from being an adventurer is really scarce. As a newbie, I was only allowed to do the easy and low earning quests.

The orders of the adventurer ranks were as follows from the bottom, Stone, Coal, Aluminium, Iron, Titanium, Bronze, Silver, Gold, Platinum and Diamond. Ten ranks in all. I am only on Stone. The lowest rank.

The rules prohibit the lower ranks to take quests that were recommended for the higher.

"I need to do a quest tomorrow or else I'll have nothing to eat or even sleep on." I muttered.

I could only sleep in a small motel room for the night.

The next day, I went out into the woods. Today I was gonna take down a giant rabbit for a butcher.

Rabbits here are the size of humans, not the particular rabbits that were domesticated. Finding them would be easy enough, especially with my special ability.

Presence detect.

My ability allows me to detect and specify any living things around me. I can pinpoint exact locations of anything that I know that were nearby. Since I know what giant rabbits are, this should be a piece of cake.

I wandered randomly in the forest. After a few minutes, I finally detected a giant rabbit.

I carefully closed in on the rabbit and drew my bow-

By the way, I use a bow and arrows mainly, but I also have a dagger in my back pocket.

-and aimed right for the rabbit's head.

SHIK!

The arrow stuck right into the rabbit's head. It let out a squeeck before collapsing.

I let out a sigh and quickly tied the rabbit with a rope to drag it back.

"There."

I was quite deep in the forest so it would take almost an hour for me to get while dragging this giant rabbit.

After a few minutes, my ability detected movements from my left. It was fast too.

I dropped the rope and quickly drew my bow. I can sense them, but they were moving so it was hard for me to hit. I didn't recognise the signatures so I didn't know what was heading towards me. Until they got to me.

Jumping out of the blue, one went straight for me. Thankful to my ability, I was able to dodge in time. When looked up to see what came, it sent shiver down my body.

"Demons."

They both had the same features, a redish humanoid body, a tail and a pair of stout horns on their foreheads. They were drooling. I could sense that they craved flesh.

Either they smelled the rabbit's blood or they happen to came by, I had to defend myself.

I drew my bow again and fired quickly. Because of my panicked self, the arrow only the demon's leg.

Shrieking, the demon rushed at me,closing the distance. With the distance close in, I hung my bow on my shoulder and took out my dagger.

Slashing it at the incoming demon. I managed to make a small cut on its chest, but it only faltered a little.

I slashed violent from side to side, trying to keep him away. Then suddenly I was pulled from the back and thrown to the ground.

"Aah!" I yelped.

I had forgotten there were two demons. Simultaneously, they charged at me.

My dagger slipped away from my hand, I grabbed bow to hit them but was slapped away by them instantly. I was defenceless.

The demons held me down. One of them bit into my arm and I screamed.

"AAAAHHH!!"

They didn't stop. I cried for help, hoing that some would come.

"Please! Help me! Someone help me please!"

Just then, I sensed something barreling towards here at high speed. A second after that, the demons' heads were no more. Blood splattered on my face.

I sense someone standing in front of the layed down me. I struggled to take a look, restraining the pain in my arm and sat with my legs out.

There I saw a man standing with his back towards me, clad in bright red armour that covered his body except for his upper arms. He wielded a sword that had a red ball on the guard. It was a magnificent sword.

Perhaps noticing my gaze, he turned around and slowly walked to me. Then he stopped midway.

I don't know why until I detected more of the demonic presences.

"There's more incoming!" I yelled.

He almost didn't respond at all, but all he did was looking dead ahead of him.

I could tell their exact locations, so I yelled.

"The left and behind you!"

He only turned to the designated directions, without saying anything.

Soon, two demons emerged from the left and two more from the other. The man stood still.

The demons immediately pounced at him at once.

"Watch out!" I yelled.

But seemed watching out was not needed as he quickly slashed all four of them in an instant. Their heads were severed in mere seconds.

I watched in amazement. He... He is super strong!

After the demons were down, he sheathed his sword. Then he walked towards me.

He stood in front of me, then he threw a bandage at me before kneeling beside me.

Then I detected another demonic presence, "One more from behind-"

Without me even finishing, he threw a knife behind me. A shriek went out and the demon stumbled from the bushes. After that, he looked back at me.

I stared at him who knows how long, until he pointed at my injured arm. I literally forgot that my arm was bitten.

I tried to wrap it up myself but it was hard to do it with just one hand. Hesitantly, I asked the mysterious man.

"U u uhm, could help me? I can't do it with one hand..."

He didn't answer, but he grabbed the bandage from and gestured for me to turn around. I followed. Soon,my arm was bandaged and treated.

"Thank you." I said.

Again,he didn't say anything. Instead he looked at the demon corpse that was close by then looked back at me.

"What?"

I didn't understand what this man wanted. I looked at the corpse and tried to guess what he meant.

"Why did I get attacked?"

He shook his head.

I guessed again, "How I got attacked?"

He shook again.

"Urmm what is it? Can't you speak?"

He didn't answer my question, but instead he pointed to me then his head.

I guessed again, "How I... Know where they were coming from?"

He nodded.

"Oh that... Uhm I have a special ability that tells me the locations of certain things.." I answered my own question.

He gave nod before standing up. Then he held out hand. I took it and stood up with his help.

He pointed at himself with his thumb.

This man, can't you say anything?

"You?" I said.

Then he pointed at me.

"Me?" I tilted my head. I really was not understanding what he is saying.

Them he pressed his finger on my chest.

"Hey!" I covered my chest and backed away.

Then he pressed on his and clapped his hands together.

I was still at a loss, what is he saying. After thinking about it for a couple seconds, I understood.

"You and me, a team?"

He nodded then he held out a hand.

This was an opportunity of a lifetime. Before, none of the adventures wanted me on their team because I was a girl and I was rank lowest.

But now this man is offering me to be in a team with him. I couldn't help but feel happy.

I took the hand and shook it. Even though he wore a helmet, I could tell that he was smiling, maybe, hopefully.

That was where our adventure started.

The Slayer

"Over there! To you right!" I gave the instructions to the man in red armour.

The demons that tried ambush him were instantly cut in half.

"Phew, that's all of them." I let out a sigh of relief.

The man swung his sword to get rid of the blood before sheathing it. Then he turned to look at me.

"Looks like we're done here." I said. He only nodded.

For the past week, we've already completed four demons slaying quests, but only demon slaying quests.

"Should head back now?"

He nodded and walked first after taking the demons' horns.

All we've been doing were demon slaying quests and nothing else. I tried to get him to do other quests, but he didn't even turn his head.

"Looks like what that butcher said was true." I muttered to myself.

............

A week ago, when we returned from the forest after teaming up on the spot.

As we walked back, I couldn't help but stare at him. His red armour was gleaming under the sun.

Perhaps noticing my gaze, he looked at me and I reflexively averted my guess. Even though I looked away, I could feel that he was still staring at me, so I thought I should say something.

"Uhhm thanks for saving me... From the demons and.... For carrying the rabbit."

Yes, he was carrying the rabbit. One of those things weigh like 50 kilos each and he was carrying it on his shoulder like it was nothing. He definitely was strong.

In response he only nodded and looked straight.

"Hey, can you talk? It's kinda awkward to be walking with someone but not chatting don't you think?"

He didn't answer. Maybe this guy can't speak. That's what I thought.

And so, we continued to walk towards the butcher shop.

"I'm back~" I said as I opened the door.

"Welcome- Ah! You're that girl that took the rabbit hunting quest. So how did it go?" Said the butcher as he wiped his hands with a piece of cloth.

"Yes, I did it."

"Good work, that was fast. So where is the rabbit?"

"Yeah, he's carrying it for me." I pointed behind me with my thumb.

The armoured man stepped forth and put the rabbit on the counter. The butcher faltered as soon as the man approached.

"Hey, that's not nice. The counter's gonna be all bloody now." I scolded the man that was unmoved.

"Uhh no, it's fine. Hey, can I talk to you for a second?" The butcher pulled on my sleeve.

"Oh, s-sure. Hey, wait for me here okay?" With that I followed the butcher.

After going to a corner, he said, "Hey um, is he your friend?"

"Uhhmm I guess? We kinda formed a team on the spot in the forest."

"Okay, okay, how did you meet him?"

"Well... When I was attacked by demons, he showed up.."

"I see, that explains it. Do you even know who he is?"

"Well, no. He hasn't said anything yet."

"Okay, so he is one of the most brutal adventurers in this world. They call him The Slayer."

"The Slayer?" I said with a confused voice.

"Yes, you know why they call him that?"

"Why?" I wanted to know who this man is if I want to stay in a team with him.

"Because he slays demons for a living! He does nothing but slay demons. Even back when he still in Stone rank, he slayed demons all the time."

"He's that strong?"

Demons are strong monster that only Titanium and above ranks were allowed to take demons slaying quests. Looks like he defied the laws and still went for demons even though he was not allowed.

"Yes, strong and he care nothing but to achieve his goal, to kill all demons. He will do anything to kill them."

"You're saying that he's like a bad guy, he seems pretty nice to me. Look, he even bandaged me."

"Well, I can't say anything about that. I've only been hearing rumours."

"Don't worry, I'm sure he's not that kind of a brute."

"Suit yourself, I'm warning you, being with him will be one hell of a ride."

"Noted."

After that, we went back to the counter where The Slayer was waiting. Maybe out of boredom, he fiddled with a pen. Seeing us coming back, he put the pen back onto the table.

"Sorry to keep you waiting."

He didn't say anything.

Afterwards, I got the reward for taking care of the rabbit and we left.

.............

As we walked through town to head to the guild, I can't help but feel uneasy that the pedestrians were staring at us.

While I was embarrassed, Slayer doesn't seem to be bothered at all. Probably because he was used to it.

Anyone that was close by were staying away from us. People really are scared of him for some reason.

When we entered the guild, all eyes were trained on us as we headed for the counter. The ones that were drinking stopped with their mugs still on their lips.

When arrived at the counter, the staff stared with a frozen expression.

The Slayer lightly slammed the quest notice that we took onto the counter. The staff flinched and yelped when he did that.

I spoke in place of him, "Uhhm, we're here to collect the reward for the demon slaying."

"Ah y-y-yes, right away." She reached down and took out a roll of money. "Here, 5000 Bytes. One thousand for each demon."

The Slayer snatched the money and walked out without even turning back.

"Uh uhm, sorry about that. Thank you." I hurriedly apologised and tried to catch up to The Slayer that had already went out the door.

Exiting the guild, I searched for him. Then I saw him not far from the guild yet. I chased after him.

"Hey, hey, wait for me!" I shouted while running.

He stopped and actually waited. Upon reaching him, I said..

"Hey, will it pain you to show some gratitude to someone?"

He didn't respond to my question and turned around. I was getting angry and stood in front of him.

"Hey, just show some sign that you are thankful to people. Like to me who had been helping you track down those demons!"

He stared, not that he took off his helmet, but I can feel it.

"If you don't least do something to show some gratitude, I'll baik out from being with you!" I threatened.

And seemed to be working. He twitched and looked away as if to find an idea and then-

"Eh?"

-He patted my head and kept walking. I turned around to look at The Slayer whom wore red armour.

"What was that?"

It was only for a second, but I felt that my heart skipped a beat.

"Was that how he says thank you?"

Perhaps noticing that I wasn't following him, he stopped and turned around.

I flinched and quickly ran to him. After I got beside him, we continued walking.

I don't know what was happening or what was going on inside his head. From the outside, he is a killing machine made for exterminating demons and couldn't care less about anything around him. But inside, I believed that he still has common sense and a human heart that was still soft.

I will help him achieve his goal. His course is more or less the same as mine, and thus I will continue to be with him.

Cave Demon Hunt

Today we went out on a quest again. What quest? Don't ask. That would be demon slaying.

We seted out early in the morning. The quest says that there was a cave filled with demons. Around fifteen to twenty of them.

For some reason, The Slayer seemed excited. Of course, he didn't really react. Just his movements were faster than usual.

Using my skill, I detected a few demonic presence nearby.

"Hey, I detected some demons, over in that direction. The cave must be close."

He simply nodded and walked in the direction that I pointed. I followed behind him.

Upon getting closer, I've detected more demons. Sixteen. Looks like the report was right.

Under the cover of shade, we watched their movements.

Demons mostly had low intelligence. Only their leaders or higher ranking demons have an intelligence almost or the same as a human.

If there are any that were not wandering around, that means that there was a demon controlling their movements.

I read all that in books since The Slayer won't say a word.

There were two demons at the mouth of the cave, acting like guards. This shows that there was a higher intelligence demon inside the cave.

For The Slayer, this was common sense. After a few seconds of observing, he immediately went out and cut down the demons at the cave entrance.

I caught to him by the entrance. He lit a torch and walked in first. The cave was dark and moist. The path was narrow but big enough to fit two people.

"Hey uhh Slayer? I'm kinda scared..." I wanted to hold his hand, but he rejected.

We came to a stop upon coming up to a fork. He looked at me.

"Uhhm, based on my skill, the demons are on the right."

He nodded and went down the right path first as usual.

The further we went in, we heard bones crunching and meat chewing sounds. Looking at each other, we both readied our weapons.

We approached closer. The sounds grew louder. Just then-

"Behind us!"

-Something was closing in fast.

Wielding his sword, The Slayer prepared for an incoming attack.

What cane out took me completely by suprise. A demon with two horns was crawling our way, fast. I could only turn around for a brief second before it was already in front of me.

I thought it would've been the end of me. Luckily, I had The Slayer with me. The slayer thrusted his sword right beside my left ear. I could hear the swoosh as the sword passed me.

His sword went right through the demon's skull piercing all the way to the back. It's blood dripped onto my clothes. I stood still. Frozen until The Slayer retracted his sword, dropping the demon onto the floor.

I sighed and said "Thanks." As I turned around.

He only nodded and faced back to the direction we intended to go.

"The sounds have stopped. The mass of demons shouldn't be too far anymore. Though, that shriek might've attracted some of them. They're moving slowly this way." I described what I could see using my ability.

He nodded and walked slowly. The demons were also making their way here, so The Slayer had his sword at the ready.

Soon, we encountered the demons. The Slayer immediately took care of them.

I always felt like I could've done something to help him, but every time I asked what I could do, he always pointed at me and patted my head. As if saying that me helping to detect the demons were already enough.

We reached into the deepest part of the cave. Where a big signature was lurking. I couldn't really tell what the demon was just by size and The Slayer wouldn't talk. So I just had to wait until I see the thing to know.

"So... It was you that had been killing my underlings. How irritating." A deep voice welcomed us from the depths.

"There he is. He's sound pretty ferocious." I said.

The Slayer threw the torch that he was holding, lighting up a small part of the cave in front of us. The light revealed something sinister.

Quite aways from us, stood a two metre tall creature. Its two horns were curled and long. It had the body of an abnormally bulky human. Its tail was massive and muscular. Its arms were big and reached down to the floor, but its legs were short. It wore no clothing, only its porcelain white skin was visible.

I gasped and fell down upon seeing it. The Slayer did even falter.

"Little girl, it seems that you are scared. But you..." The large demon turned his attention to The Slayer. "You are not even shaking. And what is this feeling? I feel like I am in danger, but against a mere human like you, I would've taken care of you in a split-"

SLASH!

The demon's arm was cut off.

"AAARGH!! You! Since when did you-?"

In a moment, The Slayer had already cut off its left arm. The demon screamed in pain while holding his stump. The Slayer was standing behind the demon.

"Impossible! I am an archdemon! A mere human cannot have done that to me! Raagh!"

The demon swung its other fist towards The Slayer.

"Watch out Slayer!" I could only watch from afar.

The Slayer moved to his left and dodged the demon's attack. He then swiftly ran up close to it and slice its leg.

"Raagh! Flame!"

Having its leg injured, the demons casted a spell that set its own body on fire. The Slayer retreated a few metres.

"HAHAHA! Come at me now! I'll have you burnt in no time!" The demon spread its arms as if to lure The Slayer in to attack it.

"I can fire a couple shots with... My... My hands... They won't stop shaking..." I was unable to move my hand for some reason.

"HAHAHA! Looks like you are too scared to even move! This is your end humans!"

The demon charged at us with its flaming body. But...

"Huh?"

The Slayer cut its head off with high speed. A demon of its stature, was clearly no match for The Slayer.

The body and head of the demon fell to the ground with a thud.

The Slayer who was still in the stance after an attack, slowly stood straight. He walked to me and offered me a hand.

I took it and got back to my feet. "Thank you."

We then went to the corpse of the demon.

"What... What happened... How...?"

It was still alive apparently.

"You never stood a chance from the start. He kills demons for a living." I said softly.

The demon's eyes met mine. "So you... You were the one that had been killing us. What the humans call The Slayer... Lord Jaldabaoth... I... failed..." Its voice trailed off as its mouth stopped moving.

Seriously, that was really creepy for a head to talk. Also, who's this Lord Jaldabaoth? There's no use asking The Slayer, so I assumed that he's like some kind of superior to this demon.

"That was creepy... Anyway, we're done here, right? Lets head back."

He nodded in confirmation.

Though he never talks and was mostly hated by others, his skills were proficiently unspeakable. Taking down a demon of that size swiftly was a feet no mere adventurers were able to do. Perhaps he was one of the gifted ones like me, but there's no way to tell since he never talks.

Well, one thing's for certain, he earned his rank as Gold in the system.
