Suga could tell something was wrong with Kageyama the moment he saw him throwing balls against the wall.
Tanaka and Nishinoya were watching him helplessly, while Kiyoko and Yachi were talking to the other second-years near the door. Hinata was practicing his receives at the opposite end of the gym.
Suga set down his water bottle and walked up to Tanaka and Nishinoya. "How long has he been at it?"
"We just got here a few minutes ago." Tanaka shrugged. Suga watched Kageyama toss the ball several more times before asking, "Do you know what's wrong with him?"
"He's thinking about Oikawa," Hinata said. Suga turned around; Hinata was holding his ball under his arm and standing behind them. "Oikawa?"
"Well, I'm not exactly sure, but I mentioned Oikawa's serves today during lunch and it looks like a hit a nerve. He's been spaced out ever since. I'll go talk to him."
Hinata approached Kageyama and said something just as everyone else walked in. Suga ran up to Daichi. "Hey, Daichi."
"Yeah?" He asked, setting down his bag. Suga stood next to him, lowering his voice. "Kageyama."
Daichi followed his gaze and noticed Kageyama. Lowering his voice, he asked, "What's up with him?"
"Hinata said he's thinking about Oikawa," Suga said. Daichi shook his head. "Kageyama has a rough past with him, I guess. I think it was more than just Oikawa being his Upperclassman, something neither of them wants to mention." Daichi clapped his back. "Let's get going, okay?"
"Sure." Suga grabbed a volleyball just as Tanaka came up. "Suga, can you help me with my spikes?"
Suga nodded, smiling. "Of course. Hey, Yachi!"
She glanced over from where she was talking with Kiyoko. "Yes?"
"Can you throw us some balls?" Tanaka asked. Yachi glanced at Kiyoko, who nodded. "You should help them."
"On it." She ran over and stood by the volleyball cart. Yachi threw Suga a ball, who tossed it to Tanaka. He slammed it over the net and landed back on his feet. Yachi glanced at Suga. "What's wrong?"
He looked up. "Nothing? Why?"
"I can just tell." She shrugged, and then quickly added, "But you don't have to tell me, of course not!"
Suga straightened. "It's just... I know it's only come up today but I've been thinking about Oikawa and Kageyama for a long time and... I just can't help but get the feeling that it's wrong for them to not work out their problems."
"So what are you going to do?" Tanaka asked causally. Suga repeated, "What am I- who said I'm going to do anything?"
"You just look like it," Yachi said, smiling. Suga paused. "Throw me another ball, Yachi."
"I know but..." Yachi picked up another ball. "You'll do something. I know it."
Tanaka and Suga exchanged glances and stared at Yachi, slightly impressed. She finally looked up. "Okay, let's go!"
Suga had kept his mind away from Oikawa and Kageyama's problem for several days, but it was always in the back of his mind, never forgotten.
A few minutes after practice began, Ukai asked him, "Suga, can you run to this shop a little far from here? I ordered something and I don't trust anyone but you and the other third years to not take their time to get out of practice, and Daichi and Asahi look busy."
Suga laughed. "I'll go. Can someone come with me?"
"Sure. Take Yamaguchi and Yachi with you." Ukai motioned for them to come over. Yamaguchi came over, holding his ball under his arm just as Yachi ran over. "Yes?"
"Can you two go with Suga to this store to pick up something?" Ukai asked. They both glanced at each other and nodded. "Sure."
"Good. Here's the address." Ukai handed Yachi a slip of paper. Yamaguchi leaned over her shoulder. "I know where that is."
Ukai nodded. "That's great. Hurry back, although I trust you three."
Thirty minutes later, the three of them walked out of the store Ukai had told them to go to. Yachi was holding a large brown paper bag. Yamaguchi offered, "I'll take that."
"It's fine!" She quickly said. Yamaguchi took it from her anyway, and she visibly relaxed and breathed in relief. Suga glanced at the two of them. They were walking on either side of him, awkwardly avoiding one another's eyes. "Um, we can cut through this park. It would be faster." Yamaguchi hastily suggested.
"Good idea." Suga nodded, wanting to get back quickly. They walked through the gate of the park and were immediately surrounded by a wave of kids. Suga scanned the area for another path when he suddenly saw a familiar face. "Yamaguchi, Yachi, hurry!"
"What?" They both asked. Suga took off, and the two of them exchanged puzzled glances before following him. The crowds around him thinned out and he stopped where it was empty. Yamaguchi and Yachi caught up to him. "What happened, Suga?"
"That's Oikawa." He motioned toward the person walking in the opposite direction and holding a little kid's hand. Yamaguchi's jaw dropped. "Let's go then!"
"Not yet." Suga raised his voice. "Oikawa!"
He turned back, and Yachi stumbled, grabbing Suga's arm. Oikawa's eyes widened at the sight of them as Suga approached. Yamaguchi hung back warily before following. "Sugawara Koushi. What do you want?"
"I needed to ask you something," Suga answered. Oikawa glanced down at his nephew, who was staring at Yamaguchi. "Who're you?"
"I-I'm Yamaguchi Tadashi." He knelt down. Oikawa's nephew replied, "I'm Takeru!"
Yachi gave Takeru a tiny wave. "I'm Hitoka."
Suga pulled Oikawa away from the three of them, and Oikawa frowned and tilted his head. "Ask your question. Make it quick."
Suga hesitated, and then went on anyway. "I want to know your history with Kageyama."
Oikawa didn't reply. Suga continued, "Why do you hate him so much? You were his upperclassman three years ago. You should've been there for him, not hating him."
Oikawa clenched his fist. "You don't understand."
"Then explain," Suga said. Oikawa took a deep breath. "Kageyama... he's one of the best setters I have ever seen."
Suga was caught off-guard. "What? But you-"
"What I mean is that he has the natural talent I never had." Oikawa interrupted. His eyes were blazing. "I've always had to work to play volleyball. Tobio just... he can just do it. And back in middle school, my third year was going badly. I misfired my tosses, my receives. I kept going... but then one day, Tobio subbed me in a game." Oikawa's voice was strong as if he was holding back his emotions.
"After that game, Tobio asked me to teach him how to serve. I was so angry, I almost punched him, but Iwaizumi stopped me. Tobio always acted scared of me after that. He tried to tone down his power so I wouldn't be taken out again. But when I left, in his second year, he let out all of the strength and energy and power he had been hiding."
Oikawa looked at his nephew, who was racing with Yamaguchi. "Sometimes I regret it. But I can't face him after tormenting him in his first year of middle school, not after him winning against some of the most powerful schools in the nation."
Suga was stunned. "But Kageyama respects you."
"He used to respect me." Oikawa corrected. Suga shook his head. "He still does. You should see him when we're talking about other setters. He goes on and on about how amazing you are and were. Sure, he's a little bitter, but only because he envies your skill. There's a reason why he asked you to teach him to serve."
"Because he looked up to me. But now he doesn't. That was ruined three years ago." Oikawa told him. Suga paused. "You could fix it."
Oikawa tilted his head. "I didn't do so much wrong to have to apologize to my Underclassman, Sugawara."
"Neither of you did. But Kageyama... he still looks up to you. Daichi and Hinata and I can tell he regrets trying to be such a good setter in middle school." Suga exclaimed. "Oikawa, I'm a setter, just like you. A setter's job is to hold their team together. And if you can't even hold your past together... how can you handle your team?"
"I hold my team together fine." Oikawa snapped. Suga crossed his arms. "You do. But what about your past? Someday, if you don't heal it, you're going to regret it. Like your knee brace."
Oikawa stumbled in surprise. "How did you know?"
"Oh, I always did. You got injured in a game back in your first year, but you kept on playing without telling anyone. And then your injury got worse and it was impossible to completely heal, so you have to wear that brace." Suga answered. Oikawa raised his eyebrows, his cocky-self coming back. "You're more intelligent than you look."
"Oikawa. I'm the official setter of Karasuno, but in almost every game it's Kageyama who sets. I have never hated him for it. Why do you have to?" Suga shook his head. Oikawa let out his breath. "So what do you want me to do, Suga?"
"I want you to talk to Kageyama," Suga said. Oikawa's eyes widened. "Talk? To Tobio-chan? Sorry, no can do!"
He waved to his nephew. "Hey, we have to go!!"
He and Yamaguchi ran over. Oikawa grabbed his nephew's hand. "We need to get home."
Suga caught Oikawa's arm and forced him to look at him. "Please. If you change your mind... you know where we'll be."
Oikawa's eyes narrowed and he threw off Suga's hand, then walked away with his nephew. Yamaguchi glanced at Suga, who was gazing after Oikawa. "What did you ask him to do?"
Suga shook his head. "I hope you'll know soon."
Yachi screamed when she entered the volleyball gym the next day.
She was the first one there and had been surprised to see the lights turned on. As she turned to the right, that's when she saw him. Oikawa was leaning against the wall, his arms crossed and his eyes closed.
"What are you doing here??" Yachi screamed. He straightened and caught her arms. "Hey, relax! I just wanted to talk with you all! That's it!"
"How do I know that?!" She demanded. Oikawa let her go. "You don't. You'll just have to trust me."
Her suspicion faded slightly. "You- you need to talk to us?"
"Yeah. All of you." Oikawa looked around her. "When do they all get here usually?"
"I think they're changing. Um... please don't kill me for saying this-"
"I won't kill you."
"-but you might want to hide? Just so when they come in they aren't too surprised?" Yachi suggested tentatively. Oikawa shrugged. "If you say so. You know most of them better than I do."
He backed off and stood at the end of the gym. "I'll call for you to come out," Yachi said.
"Sure." His voice was, as usual, cocky and mischievous, but there was an anxious edge to it. Yachi stood in the doorway just as they all came around the corner. She trembled, not eager to let them know about their guest. They all stopped when they saw her. Kiyoko asked, "What happened, Hitoka?"
"Um... you have a visitor. Stay calm." She anxiously stepped back a few steps. "Uh, Oikawa Senpai!!"
They all froze. Tanaka repeated, "Oika-"
Oikawa came up behind Yachi, his hands in his pockets. He looked up, his eyes twinkling. "Hi."
Hinata shrieked, "What's the Great King doing here?!?!!?"
Nishinoya, Yamaguchi, and Tanaka were screaming and pointing at Oikawa. Everyone else was gaping at him, stunned. Tsukki merely tilted his head, surprised, and Suga thought, 'He came!'
Kageyama was staring at his former Upperclassman, frozen. Oikawa held up his hands as if holding them back. "I just wanted to say something! Let me have my piece, then I'll be out of here."
His voice was almost amused at their reactions. Daichi glanced at Suga, who gave the tiniest of nods. Oikawa noticed it. "And, Suga-chan... thanks."
It looked like it was taking all of his effort to say it. Everyone gaped at Oikawa, who was uncomfortably looking down now. Suga flashed a smile. "No problem. Go ahead."
Oikawa looked up again. "I wanted to apologize. To Tobio-chan."
Everyone turned toward Kageyama in unison, who was stunned. He tried to say something, but his voice wouldn't work. Oikawa took his hands out of his pockets. "I'm sorry for the way I treated you in your first year of middle school. I shouldn't have lost my cool like that and I almost punched you. Thankfully, Iwazumi stopped me, but I still almost did. It's just... you had- and still, do have- natural talent that I never have had and never will. And that game where you replaced me... that was kind of the last straw for me. I couldn't stand it and I... I'm sorry. I kind of ruined things back in middle school for us. I don't expect you to do anything or to forgive me."
Oikawa walked towards the door, and everyone parted to let him through. Kageyama said, "Wait-"
"I have to go. So bye. And... good luck." He saluted with two fingers and pushed his hand out, clicking his tongue. "I'll be seeing you all."
No one moved as Oikawa walked down the path and disappeared around a building. Kageyama dropped his bag and threw off his jacket. Daichi started, "Kageyama-"
But he was already running to catch up with Oikawa, who had already reached the sidewalk outside of their school. "Oikawa Senpai!!" Kageyama yelled, sprinting towards him. Oikawa paused and turned around, surprised. 'He followed me?'
"Oikawa Senpai..." Kageyama stopped in front of him, putting his hands on his knees, panting. "I- why are you apologizing? You're the one who got overlooked, not me."
Oikawa looked to the side. "Yes, but... I shouldn't have been jealous. Suga was right."
Kageyama straightened. "Suga?"
"He's the one who told me to work things out." Oikawa was almost forcing the words out. "Tobio-chan... you're an amazing setter. I hope you go far one day."
Oikawa's cocky-self being gone felt strange to Kageyama. It felt like he was talking to an entirely different person. "I... thank you."
Oikawa remembered what Suga had said: 'Kageyama respects you... he still does. You should see him when we're talking about other setters. He goes on and on about how amazing you are and were. Sure, he's a little bitter, but only because he envies your skill. There's a reason why he asked you to teach him to serve.'
"Did you... look up to me in middle school?" Oikawa asked. Kageyama looked up, surprised. "Yes. All throughout middle school I wanted to be just like you. Even after... I knew."
"Suga said you still do." Oikawa's normal personality was coming back slowly. He pushed his hair back and crossed his arms, almost daring Kageyama to answer with his eyes. Kageyama shut his eyes and clenched his fists. "I... I do. Sometimes."
Oikawa didn't reply; his mind had been blown away completely. "You what?"
"I... I look up to. As the best setter I know." Kageyama said through clenched teeth. "After the match against Shirotorizawa, I told Ushijima that I'd prove to him that I was a better setter than you."
Oikawa was so shocked he let this slide. "But I was terrible to you. I never helped you when you asked-"
"That doesn't make you someone I can't admire. You were my hero just like the Tiny Giant is to Hinata. Sometimes... you still are." Kageyama locked eyes with Oikawa, who practically jumped back when he saw them: Kageyama's eyes were anxious... but they were also respectful and full of admiration for Oikawa. "I... I should go. Back to practice."
He had only made it a few steps when Oikawa held out his hand to stop him. "Hey, wait! Maybe- maybe you could come by Aoba Johsai tomorrow? With Hinata and Sugawara? And maybe a manager?"
Kageyama turned around, surprised by his offer. "I- sure. I'll ask."
"Thanks. See you, Kageyama." The smallest trace of a smile flicked across his face for a split-second before he turned around and sprinted away.
Kageyama stared at him, his mind whirring. Oikawa was trying. He was really trying to fix their past.
The only question was if Kageyama could too.
